Letter from the Editor: Happy Fall, and Congratulations, Tim!

Hi everybody! Happy Labor Day weekend! For those of you who are unfamiliar with my byline—which is probably most of you, because I don't actually write that often—I'm Jen, the managing editor here at TV.com. I've been meaning to start posting updates like the one you're about to read for a while... and now, well, it's September. (When the hell did that happen?!)

Anyway, I'm basically planning to check in every once in a while to let you know what's going on behind the scenes at TV.com, editorially speaking—ideas we're working on, big stories to keep an eye out for, etc. I'm also hoping to get feedback directly from you, our very smart, very handsome readers: What do you want to see us do more of on the site? What recent stories have you enjoyed, and what recent stories have you (*gulp*) hated? What shows do you wish we would start reviewing? And so on and so forth, you get the idea.

So, as we head into the fall TV season, here are a few things I'd like you to know:

We are finally going to start reviewing Doctor Who.
I know that many of you are fans (hi, @IndianaMom!), so I'm pleased to announce that, beginning with tonight's Series 7 premiere on BBC America, we will be covering the the show on a weekly basis.

We are currently working on our fall coverage plans, so now's the time to speak up regarding what you'd like to see.
What would you like to see more of? What would you like to see less of? Speak up in the comments, and be sure to list the shows you're hoping to see reviewed on a weekly basis.

Price is pinch-hitting for Tim on Breaking Bad this weekend.
If you've read Tim's review of last Sunday's episode you may have already figured out why he won't be able to share his thoughts on the finale until later in the week, but if you haven't, please know that...

Congratulations are in order, because TIM IS GETTING MARRIED TODAY!
Posting is gonna be slow for a couple days, because not only is it a holiday weekend, but Tim is about to marry an awesome lady and half of the TV.com editorial team is attending the festivities. It's like this, basically:

I promise to update this post with photographic evidence if Tim will let me. In the meantime, please express happy thoughts for him in the comments!

Annnnnnd let's end on that joyful note. I can't wait to hear from you, and I'll talk to you again soon!

Jen

Can you put a button where it notifies us if anyone replies to our comments? Oh and can you start reviewing Nikita. It's a sorely underrate show that needs some love, a feature where you marathon all shows that have ended/cancelled, more photo-recaps from Price and more articles from Cory Barker. I love his articles.

I'd like to put in a plug to review the new season of The Hour (BBC America) when it comes on this fall. Last season was all sorts of awesome!

Keep the Person of Interest commentaries coming, they are hilarious! Also love the Revenge, Once Upon a Time, and Fringe commentaries. Loves and Hates of the week on TV are also good, I usually can only relate to one or two of the moments, but I enjoy reading them all the same. I can't think of anything that I particularly dislike about the site and hopefully that trend will continue. Congrats Tim! Best Wishes!

Would really like some kind of notification, subtly, on the site when someone replies to your posts. Abit easier to respond then

Congratulations, Tim!! Wow - it seems a lot of the staff is getting married ... maybe some of us should apply for a job!

Our family all sits down to watch Grimm and Once Upon a Time, and I also read the reviews on TV.com and let me tell you - I think the producers or writers of those shows read them, too, because there was a brouhaha recently on the tv.com Grimm article where fans hated the voiceover narrative in the opening sequence : the next week, the voiceover was gone. Coincidence? Love to think not! Keep up the good work, guys, this is an awesome website.

Thank you to everyone for the well wishes! It was a fantastic day, and three days later, I'm still married!

I guess Tim doesn't like the other half of the staff.
Reply

Hey, that's not fair. You really shouldn't just to conclusions like that. I mean, did you even stop to consider that maybe the other half of the staff doesn't like *him*?

But seriously... congratulations, Tim!

Ha, I'd say prowly hit it on the head.

You should get a home button. It might just be me, but I click on a article then go to read it. After I am done, I scroll up and click on the tv.com logo (the little guy in an arm chair with a control stretched out) and nothing.

Agree with prowly. You might try switching to a different ad blocker. If you have a PC, I'd suggest Adblock Plus. It doesn't have a problem with the tv.com logo. I also use NoScript, which gives you more granular control over what loads from any particular site.
Reply
Flag
Interesting... I use ABP too, and that's what was causing problems for me. Maybe you're using a different filter subscription? I use the Fanboy's, which was the default when I downloaded it.
Reply
Flag
They have a home button; you're just using an ad blocker. Try disabling your ad blocker or using a different browser, and you'll find that the home button works just as well as it always has. I figured this out when the page loaded a little slowly for me one time.

So here are your options:

1. disable your ad blocker on tv.com

2. continue dealing with not having a home button

3. go into your blocker and try to figure out how to enable just the home button.

I wouldn't expect the staff to be too concerned with your request though since you're only experiencing the problem because you're blocking their ads.

Do we really need to tell you what we'd like changed here?

Indeed, I've even run out of witty replies to the spammers...

Thanks for the feedback everyone, but unfortunately I've decided to quit TV.com because I just realized my aunt is making $7,998/hour on the internet!

Ugh, I know the spammers are a pain. Keep flagging them, though, because flags are what help us ban the offenders and delete their posts. Hopefully as we continue to make improvements to our comments system we'll be able to prevent their garbage from ever making it to your screen in the first place.

Good news: We are definitely doing another Dead Pool and it is definitely going to be easier to participate in than it was last year... you'll even be able to share a direct link to your picks! Keep an eye out, we should be launching it this week.

Can you please bring back the TOP EPISODES category you used to have as an option for shows? It was a very useful tool for those of us that heard about, but didn't watch a particular show and were interested in (what members here voted) the best episodes.

and to agree with a few commenters, it would be great to get a notification if someone replied to our comments! that way the discussions can be way more fun! thanks

also, more price and tim

Comment notifications are definitely something we want to bring to the site. That way you'll be able to spend the time you're currently using to keep checking active threads to comment on even *more* stories... muahahaha.

But no seriously, we do plan to build that functionality in the future.

Congratulations! Tim. I would like to see review on Copper, please.

First off I would like to say congratulations to Tim. I hope you make your wife laugh a lot like you do to us.

Also can may the editors bring back that challenge where we have to guess the first five shows to be cancelled & then after all is said & done we get to see who won.I'd really like to see that return.

Your wish will definitely be granted... and soon! We're currently putting the finishing touches on this year's Dead Pool; look for it later this week.

Yeah! The dead pool! I had forgotten about that.

Too bad we all guessed "Whitney" was a gonner.....

Well, I am not talking about the daily programs, but the upcoming shows, for instance, the following shows that are counting down to start in September according to TV Line are all midseason shows and they will not be starting on the dates mentioned by tv.com: 1600 Penn - Save Me -The following - Hannibal - Infamous, etc..

Let's see more reviews of non-American shows. The UK has some of the best TV going right now and we hear nary a peep about it until some awful Americanized MTV version pops up over here.
Reply
Flag
That would be a complete change in mission for the site, which is to cover shows that air in the US. There are UK sites, you know, as well as sites for a bunch of other countries. And tv.com doesn't just cover American shows. They cover shows that are produced all over the globe (Canadian, British, Australian)...if they are broadcast in the US.

Congrats to Tim and best wishes.

It would be nice if you guys once and a while did a article on a anime show. Though i guess its a part time guy that does the stuff.

I'm too soapy to write now but that pop up thing ("in other news!!") is hella annoying..may we please lose it?

A number of you have mentioned disliking the "in other news" thing. The reason we created it was to alert you to other recent stories you possibly hadn't seen yet; we're realizing now that perhaps it's just annoying you instead...

On a netbook it takes up a huge amount of screen real-estate.

Don't waste your time on Grimm, review Revolution and Last Resort.

What if we just go ahead and review all three? Revolution and Last Resort are definitely on the coverage list for fall. Whether they both live to see spring, well, that I can't say...

Could someone explain to me why I can't access my profile? I get a blank page that says the website has a programming error, or it's under maintenance. It also says this for when I click on the forums, which is where I would ask this.

As if stands now, I can't look at my profile, check my mod que or send/receive messages. Anyone have any ideas?

This website does have bugs (very annoying ones). I got that same result when I was searching the fall programs calendar on here. But, usually if I press refresh, it works. Did you email TV.com directly with this issue? I've been having trouble with blogs. I have to refresh the page like 20 times before I can reply or thumbs up a comment. Very annoying.

Are you seeing the same problems across all browsers, or just with one in particular? Any further info you can provide might help...

I've been having this problem on IE. But, I just checked the site on Google Chrome and the site works good, no problems. Not sure about other browsers though.

Congrats Tim, I wish you and your bride every happiness in the future!

Can you make FringeFanatic a reviewer please?

I would not like to have anyone loose their job, but is there any way to let tv.com know if a reviewer is doing a pretty bad job of reviewing a show? Maybe this is already in place? And I don't mean when a reviewer has different opinions on the show to me, I mean for eg when the reveiw is a recap as opposed to, say a 'review'.

Notification when someone replies to you would be great, instead of having to scrolling down through loads of comments to find your avatar, and for no reason too sometimes :(

Now that there is a review of Hell on Wheels, I'm happy!!

There is a really annoying problem I've been having here for quite awhile now that I was hoping would get fixed.

The "TV.com" logo on the top left hand side of the page used to be a link that took you back to the homepage. For awhile, however, it has stopped working and I was really hoping you guys could fix that. It was a really useful feature and an easy way to go back to the home page of the site.

At first I thought it was me, but I cleaned the cache and tried everything to see if it would work, but I've had no luck. I asked here before, and I remember someone else responding that they had the same issue. So, I hope you guys see this and are able to fix it soon! Thanks.
Reply

It's not working for me either!
Reply
Flag
It might still be something on your end. The logo works for me (in IE, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari. I just checked.) Have you tried another browser or looked at your browser extensions/helpers recently?
Reply
Flag
Sorry I can't help with this problem. Hope it gets fixed for you. But had to comment about your avatar. It's AWESOME. Nice choice.

Thanks!

Can you please review The Legend of Korra when it returns for season two? In fact it would be great if you could go back and review all of season one but that's not necessary.
Reply
Flag
Hey happy Nuptials Tim....hope you're more forgiving of your spouse than you are to the shows you've reviewed so far...

Its a joke! Love your reviews on the site most.

I would love reviews of more British shows!

mainly, Sherlock and Merlin

and the Grimm reviews need improvement. It's sad when I dread reading them because they are boring and have stupid, ignorant content.
Reply

Yeah, please review Merlin!

Sherlock and Merlin, that!!

I love reading review by Tim and Price, they are very entertaining. Sometimes reading the review is more fun than watching the show.

Congrats, Tim!

I'd like to see more testing of new website features, as well as a proactive way of seeking feedback. I dislike the "In Other News' popup, and that has stayed while the "Top" link which I actually liked and used has disappeared. Also, in the last week, when the "Social Sharing" option appeared, there was also an "Internal Edit" option that appeared for a few days, and I'm still seeing 2 or 3 Twitter and Facebook buttons on every page, one of which is obviously misplaced and forgotten. Do new changes get beta tested and reviewed before you go live? And do you want feedback from your viewers?

Congrats Tim!!! Now the important question, what does your wife think of the ending of Lost???

Anyway, I was obsessing over what you guys did at the beginning of the last fall season, where we guessed the first 5 new shows to be cancelled and the first one to get a back 9. I actually made it pretty far too! (under my previous account, shartman). I reallyyyyy hope you guys do that again this year, that got me through the beginning of the school year lol.

I'm excited to read your Doctor Who reviews! Who's going to be the reviewer? Tim? Price?

I'm not sure if these are already in your future plans, but I would love it if you could review some new fall shows like Last Resort and Revolution. I'm on the fence if I'm going to put time into the shows, but your reviews would definitely help.

Congrats, Tim!

congrats Tim !

Could you cover The Mentalist ? I know it's a procedural but this season is gonna be heavy on the Red John aspect.

when can we start guessing which shows are getting canceled ?!

Looking forward to Doctor Who reviews! Can we expect more British shows to be reviewed in the future? Sherlock for example. I saw that Misfits was getting a review, several years late however as it is apparently only just airing in the US.

Really not looking forward to Price doing Breaking Bad, he has such revolting taste that I try to stay away from his reviews as much as possible. The guy likes The Vampire Diaries and The Inbetweeners (MTV), and dislikes Dexter. If he disrespects Breaking Bad with those awful screencaps and text captions...

Finally, congrats to Tim.

congrats Tim!! I hope you do get to review the finale because I know how much you love the show and that's why I love reading your reviews. Congrats again.

2nd, thank goodness! A Doctor Who review! I saw the premiere tonight and it was fantastic. Who will be reviewing it? I hope it's not a photo recap.

First off, congrats to Tim!!! Awesome news. Second, glad you'll be reviewing Doctor Who, and I hope this is a step towards reviewing shows that aren't 'American'. Continuum, for example, should have been followed and reviewed since its premiere (before, actually, as a lead it), and I suspect now that SyFy has picked it up for season two you will -- but that shouldn't be the only reason. Anyway, you guys do an awesome job... love the site.

I've always thought it'd be cool for you guys to try and work out a way to do a weekly podcast or something discussing the highlights of the week in regards to TV (obviously). Since you guys did that awesome audio version during Comic-Con, I thought it'd be great if a podcast could happen with the writers / editors here at TV.com

Of course, it would probably be slightly challenging to do, but if it could work, then I'd love that.

First of all congrats to Tim, and now, I would really like to see some corrections to the "airing dates" of the current and upcoming shows. Though it might not be so important to readers living in United States, it is essential to others who have no other way to track their favorite shows but from websites like yours.

So would you please recheck every individual show page and correct the dates, and I am sure that you will be very surprised to how many of them are wrong?!
Reply

Isn't all that information crowdsourced from the tv.com users?
Reply
Flag
no because I have sent corrections many times and nothing changes. I'm sure they are very busy though and there are an insane amount of shows to check through.
