If googly-eyes is an illness, the characters on Castle and Bones are definitely under the weather. Monday's episode of Castle and Thursday's episode of Bones, "The Predator in the Pool," each gave us an hour's worth of sidelong glances and lustful stares, interspersed with really creative investigations. On Castle, we met Detective Tom Demming (Michael Trucco), Beckett's (Stana Katic) new leading man. And on Bones, marine biologist Catherine Bryar (Rena Sofer) made eyes at Booth (David Boreanaz) while Andrew Hacker (Diedrich Bader) tried yet again to win over Brennan (Emily Deschanel).
It seems like the two URST-driven shows are copying each other, and maybe they are. But I'm enjoying watching the main characters branch out and kick it with similar versions of themselves. Demming was more than a match for Beckett, as he shared both her "combative" personalty and her sarcastic wit. And even though I'm all for the idea of Brennan and Booth ending up happily ever after, I can't deny that seeing each one of them have fun with someone else made me smile. They're both attempting to move on after the big rejection in "The Parts in the Sum of the Whole" and, even if Hacker and Bryar are nothing more than spring flings, the story is no longer at an URSTy standstill. At the very least, Brennan will geek out with the super-nerdy Hacker, Booth will regain his confidence with super-sexy Bryar (who's at least as pretty as Brennan!), and both will probably get laid. At the most, Brennan will realize that she can't be with an equally-socially-awkward man and accept the fact that she's in love with Booth. It seems like a win-win.
Castle is far from reaching the five-seasons-of-URST milestone, so it would seem that the relationship between Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Beckett has a long way to go before reaching a breaking point (as Bones did in "The Parts in the Sum of the Whole"). But Castle and Beckett are supposedly going to address the the tension between them in the Season 2 finale and hit the fast-forward button that Bones just hasn't been able to find for all these years.
What do you think of Beckett and Booth and Brennan's new beaus? Will the new flings turn into real relationships? Will the old flames burn bright? And what's going to happen in each show's season finale?
