Lost won't stop at eight episodes

Everyone who has seen the first two episodes of the fourth season of Lost is foaming at the mouth for more, more, more. The hit ABC show was primed to be the midseason ratings king for scripted shows, coming off a sizzling, game-changing season-three finale that brought the show back into the limelight.

Then a little thing called the strike happened. Already planned for a shortened 16-episode season, the Lost crew was able to complete only eight episodes of season four before being forced to stop working. Even with the promise from the producers of a cliffhanging ending to the eighth episode of season four, Lost fans wept silently, fearing only eight Thursday nights of mind-bending drama.

When news broke this weekend about the imminent resolution of the strike, every Lost fan perked up and asked, "Does this mean more Lost?" The answer seems to be a resounding "yes."

The Lost producers have already sounded the alarm and are going to attempt to whip up five more episodes--for a total of 13--this season.

"We're going to try to make as many as we can and do a good job of finishing out this season," Cuse told Variety. "We'll have to compress some of the storytelling we planned for this season, and that may not be a bad thing. Damon and I feel like we know how we can finish it off and still make it a really, really great story."

Cuse also said that storylines originally planned for this season that they may not get to would be picked up on later in the fifth or sixth seasons.

Thirteen episodes may be less than what Lost fans were hoping for this year, but given the circumstances, the show seems to be in good shape. Now, someone please explain what a polar bear skeleton was doing in Tunisia!

[UPDATE] New details on the back-half of season four of Lost have surfaced in an interview of Cuse by TVGuide.com's Michael Ausiello. Cuse says that the five post-strike episodes--should they be completed--won't air immediately after the initial run of eight episodes, but will likely air after a four-week break.

As for the three episodes ordered for this season that could be lost to the strike, Cuse says he will make sure they are "made up" in some capacity, likely added to either season five or six.

However, it's clear that there is still plenty of work to be done to get the rest of the season up to the quality that fans and Cuse expect from Lost.

"There are a lot of issues that have to get sorted out," Cuse told TVGuide. "We're also in the middle of pilot season.... We're kind of figuring out what has happened to all of our actors who have gone on to do other things. Literally, there are cobwebs on the couches in the writers' room."

This IS good news, or at least better than we thought it would be. Still, I wish there were the scheduled 16 but... oh well...

Not thrilled to get less episodes.

I guess 13 is better than just 8, but it kind of sucks, because we have waited so long for season 4. They already shrank the number of episodes down to 16 episodes when previous season had 22 - 24 episodes. Then they decided to cut it down to 13 episodes. Can they make the 3 episodes 2-hour specials or something? I just hope they are able to answer all the questions we have with these shorter seasons.

I was hoping that Lost would eventually finish. The story and all its sub-plots resolved, it wouldn't end like the X-Files did. For those of you who haven't seen that or cannot remember, at some point the mystery drama just went downhill and was barely mediocre. I'm saddened to see all this hype and glory about what effectively means watering down the show even more than it already is with meaningless sub-plots and characters talking in riddles much of the time. It would have been much better overall when the makers of the show realised where to give their series a definitive ending.

Tremendously good news! And think about it - if we get those missed 3 episodes in Season 5, then Season 5 might very well start earlier than Season 4 started this year! How fantastic would that be!? It would shorten the gap between the Season 4 finale and Season 5 premiere!

I really hope they don't rush into the production, and f*** up everything. We waited along time for season 4, but it was worth it. If we have to wait a little for more brilliant stuff, we absolutely should.

Please come On What Happened to the old 20-24 season series :-( I hope we don’t have to wait for long for the 5th series, and I hope it’s much longer.

I just read an interview that Carlton Cuse did with TV Guide. He says the 3 episodes will not dissappear. They haven't decided where yet, but we will get the episodes downstream. They are committed to giving the 48 episodes they promised. In the meantime they want to give us the best possible experience and ending to Season 4. Unfortunately there will probably be a 4 week gap between the current episodes and the new 5.

Cool stuff. Still I was hoping with 13 this season, next season might get bumped to 18 ;)

Some is better than none, though, and this season's only two episodes in and it's awesome.

This is the best news I have had in weeks! 3 episodes is hardly anything when many shows wont be going back in this season.

Would have loved the full 16, but this will suffice. I'm just happy the strike is over

Thank goodness - that's made my day!!

Obviously 13's better than only 8, but it kind of takes away from the whole promise of 48 more eps we had at the start of season 4. Unless the other 3 get added to season 5 or 6.

That's great to hear. I just hope we have more than 16 episodes for each of the final two seasons. We have just been cheated on three episodes this season, and as devoted fans we deserve them at a later date.

But a total of 13 - while not 24 - is so much better than 8. The gap between 8 and 13 would be much greater than 13 and 18. 8 episodes is not enough for a series, especially after such a long wait between seasons.

These first two episodes have been amongst the best for the series, and I can't wait to see how the rest of the season pans out.

How many Episodes?

42-8=34

23-15=8 34-8=26

16-8=8 26-8=18

8-4=4 18-4=14

16-15=1 14-1=13 Episodes

or

42-4=38

23-15=8 38-8=30

16-4=12 30-12=18

8-4=4 18-4=14

16-15=1 14-1=13 Episodes

Can you solve by using every number only once?

I like the following more for season 4

42-4=38

23-8=15 38-15=23

16-15=1 23-1=22 Episodes :)
