Marco Polo never got Lost, but he'll be played by someone who did.
Ian Somerhalder, who played Boone on season one of ABC's castaway drama, has been cast as the legendary world traveler Marco Polo. The miniseries, currently being shot in China, will tell the story of Polo's time spent as an envoy for the great Kublai Khan.
Marco Polo is one of the famous travelers in history, beginning his journey in 1271, at age 17, in Italy and following the famed Silk Road. He traveled further than any Westerner had at the time, through Mongolia and into China, returning to tell the world of his wondrous tales.
In the 20 century, Polo's name was used in a popular kids' game played in swimming pools.
Veteran character actor and Zantac spokesperson Brian Dennehy is set to play Khan, the head of the Yuan Dynasty and grandson of Ghenghis Khan. B.D. Wong, one of the few Asians cast in a story set in Asia, landed the part of Polo's servant.
Somerhalder played Boone on the mysterious island drama Lost. Both Boone and his stepsister, Shannon, played by Maggie Grace, met their untimely ends. Since then, the actors have been romantically linked.
