And they're coming down the last quarter! "Renew Me" is in the lead followed by "Mr. McCancel" and "Long Drawn Out Decision!" "Renew Me" extends its lead to three lengths while "Mr. McCancel" and "Long Drawn Out Decision" go neck-and-neck behind him. Oh no! "Mr. McCancel" trips and falls, shattering all four legs and his rib cage and killing his jockey. "Renew Me" is the winner by seven lengths in the Luck Derby! And it's off to the glue factory for "Mr. McCancel."
What all that mumbo-jumbo means is HBO has renewed its new horse-racing drama Luck for a second season, just two days after the show's premiere (which I really enjoyed, by the way). The renewal is for 10 episodes, and Season 2 is scheduled to air in January 2013.
According to HBO, 3.3 million viewers watched the pilot episode, but the network is careful with its words, clarifying that the figure is "gross audience." HBO previewed the Luck pilot in December, meaning that 3.3 million figure is comprised of multiple airings. Translation: Luck is shaping up to be another one of HBO's critically acclaimed yet criminally underwatched programs.
I've only seen the one episode so far, but I'm already convinced the series is a winner. It's set in a unique world full of individual machinations and high stakes, and the potential for rich storytelling is huge. And with David Milch (Deadwood) providing the words and characters and Michael Mann (Heat) shaping the series' look, Luck is an early contender for best new show of 2012.

People have compared Luck to The SopranosI say yes, but not in an overt manneronly in way manners are at the heart of the action. The Sopranos relied on family dynamics, a business code and overt violence. Luck is setting up a different dramatic flowhow losers and winners are both con men sharing a common space. Luck is the space in between.
It is all about planning and manners. Sopranos was about "family" and the code of order among criminals. At its core, The Sopranos was a HR storywhen you got made, it basically meant you got a promotion.
I was very disappointed by Luck.
But I'm not someone who calls for the cancellation of a show I don't like.
If people like it, I hope it's renewed for seven seasons.
As for myself, I could care less what a group of degenerates say or do in the process of gambling on horses. I care even less about how hard it is to be a jockey. The only interesting aspect involves the lead character but even that was convoluted in the pilot episode.
If more people were like me, wouldn't it be a better world? A world where we're all free to enjoy the shows we enjoy no matter what anybody else says. A world where cats and dogs love each other, and the wind beneath our wings brings us soaring to new heights of TV heaven! Ask yourself NOT what TV can do for YOU, but what YOU can do for TV!moreless
