Marvel and ABC Are Teaming With 12 Years a Slave's John Ridley for a Mysterious Superhero Series

Marvel is getting one stop closer to world domination, and this time it's enlisted the help of John Ridley, who produced the Oscar-winning film 12 Years a Slave and created ABC's American Crime. According to Entertainment Weekly, Ridley and Marvel are developing a television series for ABC based on an unnamed property.

The project is not to be confused with ABC's in-the-works spin-off of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.; Ridley is apparently working on something entirely different. So... let the speculation begin! What could it be?

First, here's a brief reminder of the existing properties currently making waves in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: In theaters, there's every single Avengers movie, the new Spider-Man movie(s), and the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. On live-action television, there's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, and Daredevil. And in animated form, there's Avengers AssembleUltimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors, Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., and the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy.

And with all that in mind, here are a few guesses as to which property Ridley might be playing with...

Ant-Man

Ant-Man is an Avenger! He's also one of the only ones who hasn't released a movie yet. That will be fixed later this year when the Paul Rudd-starring Ant-Man hits theaters, but if recent history is any indication, a movie is just a jumping-off point for a TV series.

Also, Ant-Man is one of Marvel's only superheroes with an incarnation who's black. Ridley's career has focused on people of color, so Ant-Man would be a logical choice.

Ms. Marvel

Along those same lines, Ridley might choose to tell the story of the new Ms. Marvel, who was relaunched last year as a Muslim teenager named Kamala Khan. Carol Danvers' Ms. Marvel—the original incarnation of the character—was supposed to appear in the upcoming Avengers movie, but was cut out because the studio felt it needed to properly introduce her to fans. A TV show would be a good way to do that.

Iron Man

Yes, we already have an Iron Man. But Robert Downey Jr. is something of a Method actor when it comes to playing Tony Stark: His budget negotiations have been a thorn in Marvel's side for the past few years. What if we met a new, younger Iron Man, in a storyline that focuses more on Tony Stark's personal problems? (In the comic books, his alcoholism played a big role.) A TV series reinventing the superhero could pave the way for Downey to be replaced.

A live-action Guardians of the Galaxy

We just really really want more Guardians (and Groot!) in our lives.

What Marvel property you think John Ridley is working on? What Marvel property do you HOPE he's working on?

Surely none of the above. I'd love to see a Spider-Man series done like Daredevil, I've always loved stories where Spidey fights mobsters. But it won't happen.

I think I will just wait to see what character ABC and Marvel will be doing.
The rest is just speculation...
If the article was about which Superhero/Comic character you would like to see next on TV then that is a different subject.

The suggestions in this article are pretty ridiculous. My money's on either Blade or Black Panther (given his solo movie is still a ways off). War Machine is another possibility, but I don't see them getting the budget to do him justice. My hope is that it's Blade, although Netflix might be better suited to the tone he would require.

I want whoever was doing Agent Carter to continue doing Agent Carter.
They already have a first rate series staring them in the face...
even if they apparently don't even know it.
Renew it.

I can't see them doing something that requires too much Special FX EVERY Episode , Unless they can do what The Flash has done and have a cut in section (flash running through the cities roads of Vancouver ahem i mean Central City) so it cuts out anyone that can fly . teleportation could be done on budget but i doubt they will go tha direction.
Fingers crossed that Teen Titans goes ahead and its one of the TV shows of the Century!

None of the suggestions above make sense. Marvel isn't going to develop a live action series on a character that already does or will have their own film franchise. It will clearly be some other character that can live independently of the film franchises with cross-over potential.

exactly what i thought, also most of the heroes that have superpowers probably costs too much (which is why the tv at the moment is arrow ,SHIELD , daredevil (not many meta or super) i know flash now has them but i think they would prefer not to spend mucho dinero on special FX.
I don't think some people realise how expensive all that is for tv (especially with what people are now expecting after films that cost millions )
Plus with Teen Titans being expected , i can't see them haven too many more superhero TV shows , although the TV producers don't seem to have ever heard the saying "too much of a good thing" i would like to think that they won't run the superhero thing into the ground , but we've seen it before with so many other tv ideas ;i(

Ms. Marvel is a good possibility given its popularity in print right now. Another good possibility is The Runaways which Marvel has planned and put on the shelf for sometime. However, my guess is Young Avengers. Before 12 Years a Slave, John Ridley wrote the limited comic book series, The American Way, which was a superhero team book set in the 1960s and featured imitations of well-known Marvel and DC heroes. Doing Young Avengers would be wish fulfillment on the part of Ridley since it would allow him to play with younger mirror image versions of this well-known team. The origins would have to be modified to fit the current Marvel Cinematic Universe but I can still see some of them retaining their origins such as their version of Captain America and Hawkeye.

Some articles I read about the same matter stated that they will be reinventing an already existing character. Well, since it will be on ABC we can cross from the list all violent ones, like Punisher, Moon Knight, Cloak and Dagger, and so forth. I was about to put my coins on a solo series of Deathlok, but since the tie-in with AoS is another thing completely, then I don´t know.

any property that is already in production to become a movie or properties that already are movies probably wont be made into a t.v show. its on ABC so any anti hero is probably out. so something family orientated or ensemble like runaways? or young avengers? maybe some thing in the past howling commandos? john ridley is also known for comedies just as much for dramas. Slapstick anyone?

I would be all for a Punisher series if it was to be on Netflix. Considering, though, that it is going to be on ABC, I'd rather they don't go near Punisher with a ten-foot pole.

I assume Marvel will follow up the four Netflix Defender series with four more properties. I think Punisher would have to be one of them. Steven DeKnight has already said he wants a crack at it. It'd be perfect. There's no way the character will wind up on ABC. If you're going to do Punisher, it's got to be R rated. It's surprising that it's not part of the current four series already.

As I also imagine the lead would be a person of color.
Blade - If on Netflix
Misty Knight - If on Netflix
Falcon - Not sure if they'd have the budget, but it could potentially work.
Blue Marvel - could be interesting, not sure how it would integrate
Brother Voodoo - would look similar to Constantine and probably fare about the same if not on Netflix
Nightmask - maybe

Of all the three, Ms. Marvel is the only one that wouldn't be bogged down with pre-existing negotiations and contracts. Ant Man and Iron Man already have someone signed for the roles, likely exclusively. So don't expect anyone else for a while.

I would like to see a Doctor Strange. That's still inconsideration but not yet in development. It hasn't got past the script stage.

Looking around it seems Runaways is probably the best possiblity. It was in put on hold for The Avengers, but The Avengers seems to be winding down. It would also fit nicely with the super-powered teenager trend. It would also give them an X-Men TV series without X-Men. And it's obscure enough not to interfere with the movies.

Actually it is in development. If something is at the script stage, it is well into development.

uhhhh.. they could just be continuing agent carter, it was a limited mini series but they could be deciding to do that full time, or even a full-time on howard stark project. There's already interest in those and a cast, wouldn't be a big leap. Ms. Marvel is probably the most likely though. however if it was for what i HOPE it is... i hope its something no one will see coming, like Black Widow or something awesome like that.

Hmm, now that I know that Captain Marvel and Black Panther are upcoming movies (2018?), I'm doubting either will also be made into series. Maybe a Ms. Marvel series would be sort of to the Captain Marvel movie like Agents of SHIELD is to The Avengers, etc.? I don't know. I'll just let others speculate and wait for the announcement. :-)

A Spider-Man tv show would be awesome, but the truth is.. I really don't know what's up.. on ABC, things have to be kept to somewhat family friendly, so, any Marvel entity which would thrive more on Netflix and other outlets where censoring isn't an issue, won't make it to ABC. So, it has to leave with entities which would translate well as a family show. I'm not sure what they have planned, but, so far, Marvel has set a high-bar for themselves and have not yet failed. I'm sure this will be pretty awesome too, whatever it is.

If they are not releasing the exact property, I'm guessing it's not Avengers-type big names as they aren't caching in on it.

Also if they are talking about it now, rather than wait to see how a particular movie goes, I'm going to guess that it's not someone in any of the upcoming movies.

So... Who is decent enough to get a show on but not decent enough to be in any of the movies? Nor tie-ins to the defenders since it's not a Netflix thing?

Lastly, we can assume it's not a mutant or xmen or fantastic four related due to the copyright thing. Oh, and lets not forget it can't have outrageous powers that are too expansive for tv.

I'm going to guess Moon Knight, Spiderwoman, White Tiger, Punisher (though hardly likely on ABC) or possibly if they are going to go Agents of Shield style for Guardians, they could do Starjammers.

Couple of things they are making a Captain Marvel film. The current Captain Marvel used to be Ms Marvel. The current Ms Marvel is a completely different character.
Black Panther it has got to be. To be honest, you could easily do a "Panther" show with his sister the current Black Panther in the comics. The story lines already exist to draw from you are just changing the character they happen to.
She comes to New York for University and... I can even see the plot of the first episode without much effort. Black Panther is sort of Daredevi/Arrow meets Iron man so would be very different to what has already been done.
Actually if he wants the pilot and most of the first season I have the rough outline just thinking about it. There are so many different directions the female Black Panther would let you go in.

I don't see Ms. Marvel getting a TV show, isn't she getting a movie?

I don't really care who the show is about as long as it's an actual SUPERhero. I don't mind Black Widow or Hawkeye but that's not a superhero to me, that's just highly skilled. We've got enough normal people with Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter.. give us more superpowers!

I have several ideas.

The Falcon - Yes he's been introduced, and will be in the Captain America: Civil War, but his stories lend to serial episodes like DD. Plus his appearance in CA 2 was liked by audiences.

Power Man - So ABC Studios (AKA Disney) is doing the Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Powenrman (followed by the Defenders), so maybe they are taping Ridley to write/direct/produce the Powerman story.

Moon Kinght - No. Unless they find another delivery system (ie Netflix). The story is dark, violent and very adult.

The Hulk - a long time ago Bill Bixby had a great show about the Hulk. Why not do another show like the late 70's show?

The Punisher - okay, so again would have to find a platform that would allow lots of violence and adult situations.

I was thinking possibly Moon Knight if he's going to go for a more grounded superhero approach. A live action show on Moon Knight would be awesome, I personally think he's an underrated character in the Marvelverse. But if they are I'm wondering how they'll do it, are they going to go for the ongoing plot development format or the random plot format which is what the current comic run is doing, either way is fine with me. Well we'll have to just wait and see if he's going to make Moon Knight a reality or some other Marvel Superhero series, either way I hope it will be great.

Luke Cage and Iron Fist are already slated to have series on Netflix like Daredevil was. AKA Jessica Jones is next with Luke Cage following and Iron Fist coming last before they come together in The Defenders mini series.

This seems like it is being developed for ABC to air so it is probably yet another property being optioned.

If the Luke Cage and Iron Fist series do well though I can see them coming together after The Defenders for a Heroes For Hire series on either Netflix or ABC, possibly having Spider-Man cameo.

I'm really hoping it's a Kamala Khan Ms. Marvel. John Ridley has already shown a penchant for developing shows with racial tension and I'd love to see his take on a Muslim girl that gets superpowers in America. Marvel will insist a light touch on politics but TV could certainly use a positive role models for Muslims and especially Muslim girls. (is there one on American TV today?).
