Messing Around on the Internet with Daniel Tosh of Tosh.0

Daniel Tosh awaits the swimsuit portion of the interview with Miss Teen South Carolina.

Comedy Central's Tosh.0 takes on the internet by collecting the best videos on the Web and making fun of them. The humor pushes the limits of taste and class, and we wouldn't want it any other way. Season 2 premieres tonight at 10:30pm on Comedy Central, and we chatted with host Daniel Tosh about what we can expect.

TV.com: Other shows have attempted to marry viral videos and television and FAILED. What makes you guys so special?

Daniel Tosh: I would assume the common denominator is me. [laughs] I don't know. Comedy Central wanted to do a show with me, and they also wanted to do a show about the Web. They also wanted to have a bigger Web presence, so they came up with the formula. I don't really have any answers. The one thing I will say is that they've been very nice at letting me do the jokes I want to do, and they haven't really censored us at all.

Season 2 premieres tonight. What's being tinkered with in the new season?

That's another good thing about the show and Comedy Central, if something doesn't work, we're fine with changing it. We don't care. [laughs] So we're trying new segments constantly. I'm having random celebrity guests come on and help me. We got Sylvester Stallone's son in Over the Top to come on and arm wrestle me. Just because we thought that was ridiculous. The internet has a bunch of people trying to set records or do challenges, so we've set out this thing this season where people can send in a link of them trying a challenging trick basketball shot or eating a million jalapenos or something like that, and the premise is that I can beat anything they've done, but much better. We'll be doing a bunch of ridiculous things that I assume will make me throw up or end in me getting seriously hurt.

My favorite part of the show is Web Redemptions, where a Web star gets a chance to relive their glory, for better or worse. Who approaches who for those?

We've had a handful of people who have sent us a link from their friend, but for the most part those aren't the ones we want.

Have any of these internet celebutards declined a chance to participate?

Oh yeah. At the beginning of the show, probably 95 percent of the people we contacted wanted nothing to do with it. They said, "No way, we're trying to get past this." I'd say now, we're getting close to batting .300 on that.

Who was the best Web Redemption?

[laughs] I was going to say Miss Teen South Carolina... she's a good-looking girl. Probably the first one, Afro Ninja. That guy should win out. He's a genuine nice guy, and it was a good story. And the fact that he landed the part despite that terrible head fall.

Your first Web Redemption for Season 2 focuses on the "David after Dentist" kid, right?

Right. That kid who was all hopped up on drugs in the back of the car and his dad exploited him. I feel like he was just asking normal questions of anyone who was tripping their balls off. For the Redemption, we interviewed them, they were nice, we got the whole backstory. And... legally, with the help of a specialist on the set, we gassed the father and had some fun exploiting him. We felt like he embarrassed his son, so we wanted to put the shoe on the other foot.

Do you have any fans outside the show's males ages 18-34 target demographic?

Yeah I guess so, but for the most part it's exactly what you said, young men. I get shocked if there's a single woman who watches the show. 'Cause usually when you show a video of someone throwing up, that's when women change the channel.

What was it like being on the other side of the viral video phenomenon with your very funny "Is it Racist?" video?

[laughs] Ha! That one almost got me shot! That guy [we parodied] put out videos telling me what he's going to do to me. We're doing a second segment of "Is it Racist?" in our first episode. I have no problem doing it, certainly in my standup I've never been afraid to say anything. I'm happy Comedy Central has allowed us to push it as much as we have.

You probably get asked what your favorite viral video is all the time, so let's skip that. What kind of videos do you absolutely hate?

I am not a fan of babies. Babies or cats are hands down my least favorite to watch. Anything that's over four minutes immediately appalls me. Or people that when something horrible happens turn the camera off right away. Even if you have to go rescue your friend, keep the camera rolling and run with it.

Season 2 of Tosh.0 premieres tonight at 10:30pm/9:30pm Central on Comedy Central.
