Michael Weatherly Is Leaving NCIS This Season

That sound you hear is the anguished cry of millions of fans who still find pleasure in watching CBS's long-running drama NCIS. On Tuesday TV Line confirmed that Michael Weatherly, who has played the wisecracking, good-natured, movie-loving Special Agent Tony DiNozzo since the show's premiere way back in 2003, will be leaving at the end of this season. The news came out in an interview with David McCallum, who plays the series' medical examiner, in Vulture Hound magazine and was later confirmed by the actor himself via a series of sentimental tweets.

Weatherly, along with McCallum, leading man Mark Harmon, and actress Pauley Perrette are the show's only original remaining cast members. Sean Murray, who plays Special Agent Timothy McGee, joined the series in Episode 7 of Season 1 on a recurring basis and was upgraded to series regular in Season 2. Meanwhile, Sasha Alexander's Kate Todd was killed off in Season 2 after the actress chose to leave. And in 2013, Cote De Pablo, whose character Ziva David replaced Kate and was involved in a will-they-won't-they relationship with Weatherly's DiNozzo, left the series, thus breaking many fans' hearts

Will you miss Weatherly and/or DiNozzo?

I will miss him, most of all the headslaps he gets from Gibbs. I miss those slabs. Hopefully he'll get one at the end.
I think Kristen Bell should replace him in the team or Angie (Rizzoli & Isles).

I stopped watching NCIS the episode after Ziva left. Not through any deliberate action but because I forgot to watch it one week and then never bothered catching up. I do think however, that, as much as I loved the series, it has gone on a bit too long. Tony was one of the best characters and I think that once the lost another actor/actress that the show will have to bow out.
Otherwise it's just going to be Mark Harmon at 90 sitting in a bullpen with people nobody recognizes.

I'll be devastated to see him go as Tony's his class clown life-of-the-party humour is has been the driving force that's kept me watching all these years. I hope they do him justice in the end - either give him the proper send off via the promotion he rightly deserves as an excellent agent, or dare I say it, kill him off so tragically my heart will bleed for years to come. As much as everyone seems to want Tony and Ziva to finally get together, it would break my heart to watch him chase after her again like a lost puppy with his tail between his legs. He deserves better than that kind of walk of shame. Please, make it right!

Not at all. They took him much to long inside the series. But who will be his replacement. Perhaps now it is time to put Borin at the free NCIS place. By the way it is funny that all the Americans here, who live in a country where showing a nipple already shock the whole country will miss an agent whose only thought are about women and sex.

Tony is my favourite character on NCIS and I'm very sad MW has decided to leave but I can understand his decision. I have my fingers crossed he gets cast in another successful series that gives him a chance to display his amazing talent. I'm not sure NCIS can survive without Tony. His character supplies the spark. All the other characters work off him. At least I've still got Deeks on NCIS LA and at least they're giving him and Kensi some storylines this season after last season was such a disappointment.

His replacement should be Rey Valentin as Dwayne Wilson. "Collateral Damage" was in Season 6. Wilson would have solid agent experience by now.

It does truly suck that Michael Weatherly is leaving NCIS, but I'm not surprised.
The fact that he's stayed on as long as he has shows what a team player he is and I believe
what a truly great actor he is! He truly is one of the best of the shows originals,
he played his character flawlessly and always on Q, I will miss him greatly on NCIS
but look forward to seeing him in other great roles in the future !
Break a leg Mr. Weatherly

Just bring back Ziva. Get over your bitterness NCIS producers and do it for the fans. Unless you don't care what we want then do what you want and watch your own show.

I stayed after you spent 8 years teasing us with Tiva and now not even considering bringing her back to make the fans happy, YOUR FANS is deplorable.

13 years? Yeah he probably should be leaving. Show's been on thirteen years and still goin strong? Daaayuuum. Surprised Harmon and Perrette don't leave as well. I don't remember Anthony Edwards (ER) or Petersen (CSI) ever staying this long on their ridiculously long running series.

In the world of modern television a show like this is baffling. Most shows can't stay on the air for two or three years, but this show just keeps on chugging. Not only that it makes decent money. So quite frankly I'm shocked anyone's going anywhere.

I mean what else is he going to do? Broadway? Good luck getting NCIS money there.

Sucks that Michael Weatherly is leaving. He truly is one of the shows originals, as he was the backdoor-pilot for this show on JAG back in 2003.

I honestly expected David McCallum would be leaving first. Not Weatherly. But you look up, and he's been on the show 13 years. And I don't see how the show recovers without him. There isn't another actor that will be able to fill Michael Weatherly's shoes and bring to life a character as good as the Tony DiNozzo character.

You know, NCIS remains a great watch, but I still feel the absence of De Pablo's Ziva. Harmon really drives this thing, is Perrette playing his conscience? No details, apparently, on why Weatherly's DiNozzo is leaving.

Since I started watching this show all those years ago, Kate was my favourite character and I was so hoping for her and Tony to get together... but then Sasha Alxeander decided to leave, Kate was killed in season 2 finale, after the most amazing episode, SWAK. I was heartbroken. Then her replacement appeared and... Well, Ziva reminded me too much of her - in looks and in her relations with Tony. I was never a fan of Ziva, I used to like Tony but it changed after time, thus I stopped watching the show and I still wonder it lasted this long. They should have ended the show after 10 or 12 seasons to leave good impression in the minds of the fans.

I also used to like NCIS: Los Anegeles, but got tired with the show not giving Eric any interesting plots and develpments since season 1! He was never involved in any cliffhangers at the end of a season and never had a story spread on a number of episodes. And for not advancing Eric and Nell relationship, since she appeared in season 2. I like Kensi, I like Deeks, but their relationship is such a cliche, ugh. Damn, sorry for this rant :|

Yeah, it kinda is too, but that's a plot barely touched since season 2. It's clear they both attracted to one another and they get jealous from time to time, but that's all there is, for six seasons. They could move that forward, one way or another, like they did with Kensi and Deeks... Well, to be fair, whole NCIS:LA is full of cliches. Lately, I lost faith in several shows I was watching, including the one I used to like the most (Hawaii Five-0) and it made me kinda grumpy, sorry.

Looks like this shows downturn is now complete. I used to watch this show regularly and then Ziva left, but they replaced her with a very very bad character Bishop. I am glad he is leaving, not even a TV fictional character should take this downgrade in order to elevate a poorly written character aka Bishop.

Its the charisma of the group of characters that has kept me watching this show this long. Hopefully this won't kill that but i suspect it might. Sorry to see him leave.

I am surprised he stayed this long, as his character has been pushed into the background in order to showcase the pisspoor character of Bishop played by an inept actress. I hope CBS can swallow their pride and bring back Cote for Tony's last episode. Maybe the two actors can find a different show to work together on, as they have great chemistry. Sadly, due to CBS' many mistakes in the last two years, this will most likely be NCIS' last season.

CBS doesn't need to swallow their pride , they even admitted to throwing increasingly large amounts of cash to try to convince Cote to stay it was her choice , anyway the actress who plays Bishop isn't bad it's just that Ziva was an ex Mossad agent whose dad was the Mossad director and with that she brought plots to do with Israel/terrorism and international espionage , Bishop is an analyst who is from a farm in Oklahoma... kinda hard to make that exciting :) So blame the writers not the actress.

Wow, it's like the end of an era. I'm not watching NCIS since before Ziva left for good. She was the main reason I stayed on. Still it's sad, when characters leave, that I have accompanied over a decade. Hopefully, Toni gets a real good ending and doesn't end up shot in the head. It would be nice, if he could have his happily ever after with Ziva. That I would watch.

My favorite character on the show was Shiva. She was a complicated and woman. When she left i stopped watching the show (sorry)
Now it's only a matter of time before Pauley Perette leaves the show.
Come on she's 46 but in her role as Abby she still acts and dresses like a 20 year old with pony tails and tattoos and what not. To disguise that she wears layers and layers of make up. I think it's distracting. But that could be just me with my weird stereotypical ideas about how people should behave at a certain age. I like to see her in a more mature role because i do like the actress. Maybe she could play a mother of several teenagers. That would be great. But to be honest i know a few women that still try to act like they are twenty years younger. So they do exist. I just think it's a little strange. Maybe i'm old fashioned.

They could give Cote de Pablo a guest role in one of the last episodes this season and Tony and Shiva could live happily every after.
Wouldn't that be nice?

Dinozzo will be missed, but after a suitable grieving period, I think he can be replaced with someone smart, funny, lighthearted, good looking, young (I keep picturing the guy from Limitless). I wonder if Weatherly has acting plans or if he can retire comfortably. I imagine he has become kind of typecast. I remember him fondly from Dark Angel and it took a while to remove my image of him from that role.

We started watching NCIS as a follow-on to JAG. I'm really not sure the show will survive his departure. Dinozzo was always the Ying to Gibbs' Yang. Too key to the chemistry of the ensemble. It's akin to when Dan Blocker left Bonanza almost 50 years ago...no life for Bonanza after that. It would be like Spock leaving Star Trek. But if NCIS goes then eventually New Orleans goes too -- as in the case of the CSI's. I hope Michael has had good financial advice, if so, he should be secure for a long time. All the best Michael. I'll miss the movie quips....

So Tony is departing, Gibbs has a new 'look' that looks like he'll soon have a desk at a retirement home. unless the writers can summon up something magical, I fear another good show will disappear into the ether.

I can recall scenes where Tony was goofing off that made me laugh so much I has to re-watch the episodes.

He will be missed.

I hope that the way he leaves is by accepting a promotion to lead his own team somewhere. That way, he's have his own team, even if we don't see it. Regardless of what happens to his character, I hope that he gets good story arcs the rest of this season. Maybe they can get Ziva back for an episode if they are lucky.

I stopped watching in season around the start of season 9. If he wanted to avoid being typecasted it's a bit late for that, I do have good news the Hallmark channel will hire anybody! The best way to avoid being typecast in a particular role is to play more diverse roles while your are popular. I've been so busy these days that the only show I've kept up on is TVD.

"Do not attempt to adjust your set [...]"

I'm not one for NCIS and the likes, since they seem to be never-ending and ever-lasting, but I still fondly remember the actor from the good old days of Dark Angel. Always thought it was a shame that he got stuck on a mostly episodic show with more or less repetitive themes, but I guess it worked out for him to spend such a huge chunk of his life there.

No matter how good the money, you'd hope a person would see something other as more appealing than staying in a career rich but suicide franchise. And as he has managed fine on this 'demanding show structure' for so long, hopefully no bullshit reason will arise.
Though I must confess, Christmas/Thanksgiving shows have been all I've digested for the last couple of years. And (and it's a big one), please don't do some shit sitcom man.

I still watch the show regularly but it has been dropping in quality these past few years and the loss of Ziva was bad. It may be time to put this show to bed and let it go out on the best note it can. The show still produces a good episode here and there (I really liked the episode that had to do with Ducky's past this season) but most episodes just kind of blend together anymore. And as much as they have been really trying hard with Ziva's replacement (I cannot remember her name for the life of me and that tells you a lot - and I have seen every episode and still her name eludes me), the show lost something it cannot replace with Ziva being gone.

I agree with you..The show is still a top drama on television but not for me anymore. I loved NCIS but have watched very little of this season. I usually watch out of one eye when it is on now. I am most of the time messing on my laptop when it comes on. When Ziva left it really ended for me. I just can't like the Bishop character and the show doesn't feel the same. I even think the writing is different . Now Dinozzo is leaving,( and I really can't blame the actor he just wants to do something different). Now the show really wont be the same...I hope they end his character in a good way and don't kill him off or anything like that. I hate it when they do that..I also read that David Mccallum said this may be his last also..he said since he is in his 80's he didn't know how much more longer he can ducky....

I hear you on the one eye on the show, more often than not I am on a laptop as well while watching the show. It is just when a show reaches this many seasons, it begins to lose what made it great, because you know all of it too well and it is not too often they give you something new and interesting.

Not selling it short, but if you watch episodes from 5 years ago, or 10 years ago, they are better. I still like the show, but it just doesn't hold up the same as it did before. Bishop (I finally remembered her name) doesn't seem to fit right and losing Dinozzo is gonna be another blow to the show.
