Modern Family, Justified, and Happy Endings

What to watch on Wednesday, April 13.

Wednesdays are basically our weekly rewards for getting through Tuesdays, but they are also a pre-party for Thursdays. I know that sounds complicated, but just go with it!

8pm, CBS
Survivor
You’ve got to admit that last week’s merge episode ended hilariously. After dominating Redemption Island for five straight weeks, Matt finally rejoined the merged tribes a hero—only to get blind-sided AGAIN and sent right back to the island. So perfect. Anyway, expect Redemption Island to get pretty crowded after tonight’s DOUBLE ELIMINATION!

SERIES PREMIERE, 9:30 & 10pm, ABC
Happy Endings
Finally, a sitcom about romance among twentysomethings! Just kidding, there are twelve-hundred shows like this, but fortunately this one looks pretty good? Elisha Cuthbert, Damon Wayans Jr., and Casey Wilson star in this single-camera comedy about a circle of friends who must keep it together when their core couple decides to break up.

9pm, ABC
Modern Family
Tonight Phil tries to make his family seem marginally more photogenic for a realty advertisement; Cameron gets a little too intense at his new gig as musical director at Luke and Manny’s school; and Jay rekindles some serious sibling rivalry when his brother pays a visit. Well, I continue to be amazed at how fruitful these documentary subjects have been. Where did they FIND these people?

9pm, CBS
Criminal Minds
While struggling to carry on after the “death” of Prentiss, the team travels to San Diego to track a serial killer preying on college students. The part of Dr. Spencer Reid will be played by an Edward Gorey illustration.

10pm, FX
Justified
Everyone finds themselves on shaky ground as Winona goes ahead with divorce proceedings and Mags decides to start “settling accounts” after Coover’s death. FX should rename this town Stressville because, jeez. Could someone just bust out a Slip 'n Slide already?

SERIES PREVIEW, 9:30pm, Showtime
The Franchise: A Season with the San Francisco Giants
Although this documentary series won’t officially premiere until July, check out tonight’s preview episode of this rare glimpse behind the scenes of a World Series-winning team. (Note: Although this does air on Showtime, it’s also an official MLB production, so don’t get your hopes up re: frequent nudity and light-hearted drug abuse. For that, see the rest of the Showtime schedule.)
