Moviegoers will Dream of Alba

Former Dark Angel Jessica Alba, recently seen in the films Sin City and Fantastic Four, has been cast in the titular role in the upcoming TV-to-movie conversion I Dream of Jeannie. The actress beat out several other "It girl" actresses, including Kate Hudson, Alicia Silverstone, and Lindsay Lohan. The original role was played by Barbara Eden.

I Dream of Jeannie premiered in 1965 and ran for five seasons. It told the story of astronaut Anthony Nelson, played by future Dallas star Larry Hagman, who stumbles upon a genie's bottle after his rocket crash-lands on a desert island. After he rubs the bottle, a genie named Jeannie pops out and attempts to fulfill her new master's every wish. Unfortunately for Nelson, Jeannie's wish fulfillment only serves to mess up his life in comedic ways!

Former Saturday Night Live comedian Jimmy Fallon stars as Major Nelson. The film will be directed by Gurinder Chadha, who directed the international hit Bend It Like Beckham. Jeannie is set for a 2006 release and is another in a continuous stream of movies based on television shows.

When Bewitched was released in theaters they gave us the original TV show on DVD. Now that this movie is being released, does that mean we finally get the original Jeannie on DVD as well? God, I hope so.(As with Bewitched, I will be a no-show at the movies for this one.)

alba is all wrong for the part. sure, she probably looks good in the costume. but she doesn't have the spirit and fun and intelligence and wit of the original jeannie. jeannie was smart. alba is a barbie doll. fallon as the major? wrong, wrong, wrong.

I love Alba and Hate Fallon

  • dbzexpert

If Jessica Alba is in it, I will see it.

  • ServeEye4

Jessica Alba will do just about anything won't she? She could be a genie without being blonde, why does she have to be blonde all the time? She is great looking with her natural color, the blonde thing she's always doing doesn't even look real.

Ok....So now I can add another movie bomb to my upcoming list...

I Dream of Jeannie was a GREAT show for its time, but I really don't see it being able to sustain a movie.

I'm definately intrigued about this movie. However, I was also intrigued about Bewitched which starred two people who I thought were a good pair. I just hope Jeanie won't be as dissapointing as Bewitched.

Why are they making another classic tv show into a movie? Haven't the movie studios learned that they flop?

  • morninglight

jimmy fallon alone will ruin it. did you see his last movie. he's just a terrible actor. and alba? what the heck are the getting her in it for, couldnt they have find someone better. i hate these tv to movie conversion things cuz they always find bad actors to play the roles. will ferril in bewitched was very stupid to.

  • suzyliz

Oh no! She has to go blonde again? They couldnt find someone else's career to ruin?

  • IllyriaRules

#1) I don't think they should bother remaking the show into a movie
#2) Alba just is too different from Barbara Eden, and she looks horrible as a blonde
#3) Jimmy Fallon's involvement is a garentee that the film will bomb

  • RJ-viewer

They showed a great deal of restraint by not casting Nicole Kidman. Maybe someone noticed that all the remakes she's been in have bombed.

I tend to be leery of TV knockoffs but Alba and Fallon
are such gifted, charismatic performers that the filmmakers would have to *work* to successfully sabotage a proven commodity with these actors as the leads.

If the supporting players are cast as appropriately
(and if Eden and Hagman can grace the movie with an
appearance),this film will win as a homage to a popular
series and as a hit in its own right.

As an aside,in an era when the Middle East and things
Arab or Muslim have too often been coupled with negative connotations,it will be refreshing to see a live action movie that can show whimsy, innocence, humor,
adventure, romance and female empowerment all in one
wholesome, exotic package that celebrates (rather than
vilifies) the Eastern culture.

Yes,it is about a rather silly, even sexist myth.

But with the right updates(that retain the best of
the original premise),this "Dream" could be a wish come
true for fans of the old series and new viewers alike.
If I've learnt anything about the making of old TV shows into movies is that they all ***. Who cares who they got to play the role. The movie probably won't be all that great.
