MTV Video Music Awards: Here Are the Evening's Winners and Losers, Plus a Ton of Photos

The MTV Video Music Awards were held in Brooklyn on Sunday. Every year we scratch our heads as to why the VMAs still exist when no one watches, cares about, or even realizes music videos still exist. But then Lady Gaga shows off her lady bits, Miley Cyrus makes us clutch at our pearls with a freaky performance, Taylor Swift gets caught on camera mouthing the words "shut the f--- up" while One Direction is on stage, and then we remember why we gather every August for this hot mess of an awards show.

Read on for a list of the evening's winners and losers, as well as a photo gallery that includes photos from the red carpet, the telecast, and more. For a full list of winners, click here.

The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards

WINNERS

Everyone in 'N Sync who's not Justin Timberlake  'N Sync reunited for a brief performance during Timberlake's performance of a medley of his best musical moments, including "Cry Me a River" and "Rock Your Body."  Although Timberlake took home the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, the real winners were JC Chasez, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick because this was the first time they were relevant in 10 years.

Beetlejuice — Never before has Beetlejuice looked so good

Human rights — While accepting the Moon Man for Best Video with a Social Message for "Same Love," Macklemore said, “Gay rights are human rights. There is no separation.”

The '90s — First 'N Sync reunited, and then Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas of TLC introduced Drake, who everyone knows is really named Aubrey Graham and was on Degrassi: The Next Generation, which missed the '90s by only a couple of years.

LOSERS

Everyone watching the livestream  MTV went all out this year with their online streaming, providing online viewers with a look at the audience, what was happening backstage and in the talent prep room. But for some reason they refused to show a livestream of the actual telecast—you know, the thing that people actually tuned in for.

Everyone who watched Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke perform  If anyone can explain to us what happened during those very uncomfortable few minutes, it would be much appreciated.

Kanye West — We get it, he's Kanye. He can name his kid North West and half the world thinks it's awesome, while the other half thinks it's weird, but applauds him anyway. But what was up with that silhouette performance?

1.Did enjoy little flashback ride with JT. that man was awesome. i mean "sexy back" "my love" "cry me a river" gets me at all times. the whole room was standing even Smith himself.
2.The only singer though who actually have voice is Mars boy. Listening to him was a bless for my ears.
3.And the only perfomance show men are Timberlake and Kanye. the only.
4.this other bunch of creeps...meeeh.
5.and yes pop culture is dying. god bless the next generation hope they will get someone who'll be at least a bit closer to MJ and Beatles and a little less alike one d, cyrus, perry etc.

The thing is her performance would not have been that horrific if it wasn't for that terrible song....her music sucks. Thus, anything connected to it does too. I mean, lets be real, we can forgive the musicians their outfits cos its the music which is the NB thing. Gaga, Madonna, anyone.....same here we can overlook the skanky bear outfit, Gwen Stefani's stolen overall look and her jack russell terrier Milo in The Mask tongue sticking out...but you can't overlook the music. So...it does not matter how hard she tried to look cheap, in any case her music did it for her and thus this whole performance was so bad, even Lady Gaga was probably horrified. As was I. Please someone plug my eyes OUT!

ChainsawSuit's take on it really made me laugh: http://chainsawsuit.com/2013/08/26/show-me-that-smile-again/
MTV needs to be arrested for crimes against humanity for fostering these behaviors.

The way she 'sang' blurred lines was the most cringe worthy part of the performance, she was just horrible bad bad bad... ugh

I heard so much about Miley Cyrus over the last couple of days and her performance in the VMAs. She was honestly bad from every or even any single angle. She dressed like a cheap underage prostitute. She got way too skinny (she didn't have an ass), with ridiculous teddy bear costumes and stupid hair. She speaks like Honey Boo Boo and her singing was ridiculous. She ruined blurred lines with her screeching voice. One can ask, What the f*** happened, but one can argue, hey, everyone is talking about her now, so is there such thing as bad publicity?

I have not watched the VMA's in a while (mainly because they're the VMA's and, really, I find reruns of Antiques Roadshow more worthwhile). That said, Miley Cyrus got exactly what she wanted: people talking about her and a spike in her new album's pre-sales. So.....good job, everyone who was outraged and then continued talking about it on every available media platform! Way to show her.

I.......DAMN IT! ;-) (though truthfully, I don't have a problem with Miley Cyrus....I think she's got no business being a professional singer, but I feel that way about a LOT of today's pop stars, so.....)

;-P I didn't mind her in the past, she had some half decent songs the least, but in the VMAs, she was an atrocity (hope I spelled it right). and yes, today it seems that everyone can be a star! God bless auto tune and lip synching!

Can't believe no one's made a "Miley, please stop" comment.. even Yahoo managed that headline. I've come to expect more from the TV.com community..!
Missing winners: The Smith family, for what are pretty much the best reaction faces the internet has ever seen!

I didn't watch the awards show, but I had to see what everyone was talking about, and yeah...she probably shouldn't have done that. I could finish the video with the guy and the jar (*while* eating a raspberry coffee cake), but I couldn't finish that performance. They talk about the Britneyfication of pop culture, but it also applies when they burn themselves out.

The thing about Cyrus is that i can´t even call it vulgar, it was just plain ridiculous, i had to wonder a couple of times if this just wasn´t some kind of a joke, an ironic commentary gone wrong maybe? in anyway, i can´t believe that no one on the production team took a second to step back and say "gee guys, i think this is not working".

Exactly. So much of her antics for me didn't even come off as overly slutty, they just came off as weird. Like the tongue hanging out thing. Was that supposed to be sexually provocative? Huh? To me it just looked weird, and the more she did it the weirder it got. What was the deal with the way she creepily went down the stairs either tongue hanging out? The whole thing just made me feel deeply uncomfortable. Like you say, how can her production crew not have seen how odd this would come off?

Correction, "creepily went down the stairs WITH HER tongue hanging out"

Really...playback was phenomenal?

Well, no. The medley of his old stuff was great though. I might have exaggerated a little, but then the contrast of his performance with the rest was so stark.

Miley Cyrus's thing (can't call it a performance) was so bad and stupid that is was HILARIOUS. As soon as saw that toungue out I laughed myself out of my seat.
You know, when you got it you don't have to flaunt it.So keep us showing what a big time loser you are Miley.

Loved the viewer showing off everyone's style. Taylor Swift's classic look blows everyone away. She looks amazing in her slinky navy dress, 40's style waves and makeup.

Blurred lines was the song of the summer, and as the summer ends, that performance essentially ends everything that was good about the song and made it awful.

This happens to almost all former Disney stars, they over correct and go too far. Then a few years from now they either spiral out of control like what Britney did, or they re-correct and do something classy and adult.

Apparently, there's deeper meaning behind Kanye's performance: http://www.rapbasement.com/?p=101418/Kanye/082613-kanye-west-decodes-blood-on-leaves-performance-at-the-video-music-awards

The background image was that of a lynching tree, and it was taken by director Steve McQueen when filming his newest project 12 Years A Slave, which I can't wait to see.

Loved Gaga...as always in whatever she does...Loved Justing getting back with his old buddies and hear those childhood songs...but if even Miley was trying to get attention, afterwards the VMA...then she really did a good job...i watched in disgust at her...looked she was onto something and looked like a cheap whore...who was riding all over thicke and was funny how some people in the audience reacted to the scene...if anybody saw that...?? But the rest was a bit boring...i am glad, that i didn't stay up...i could have liveststreamed 2 am in the Netherlands...glad i slept..and checked out the parts later...waste of money...really

MTV combined with music in any way is a joke. These award shows are a waste of time and money and is only there to make pimps and hookers get prime time attention. The way these shows are it looks more like a strip club. Every year it's the same - "cool" rappers and whorish women. Miley gets cheaper by the minute, although nothing can really compete with the Gag-a-whore. Didn't she even start her attention-seeking in a strip club anyway?

These so called artists are an insult to good music.

VMA get worse and worse each year...in past I atleast enjoyed something, but this was just horrible...Miley has no talent and that slut stunt was, just so that people would start talking about her again, marketing, etc. Over the top and way overrated show.
And if you saw, they only people in public they shown, were Smith family,Taylor and Selena,Rhianna or One direction,Drake...it's sad I even know some of these names...
Will was just fake,at least his son didn't fake it and showed he was bored at times.

Robin Thicke is as generic as generic gets, just a product of Pharrell. Whenever you hear clips of the song being used it's Pharrell or the beat, not Robin... and the song isn't even any good. The music video, on the other hand, is very good.

Human rights: yes and no. Yeay for that quote, Macklemore, but women rights are taking a hit with misogyny all over the place.

Any extreme is bad. Being extremely slutty of extremely frigid is equally bad. The key is in the balance. So Miley gets these reactions 'cause she's obviously out of balance. Or, and the whole tasteless psychedelic kitch thingy that was her number) I mean, Will Smith brought his children to this show... What a disaster.

I agree. Well said! All of these people need to stop calling her names. I didn't even see it, I've just been subjected to many supposed ADULTS saying really nasty things about her on the internet all day. If you don't have anything nice to say. . .

You should really see it. You really really should. I mean, if by some chance extraterrestrials came to earth and held a court whether or not to destroy humanity and on the one hand they weigh Mona Lisa and Bible and stuff, 30 second highlights from Mileys performance wold seal our doomed fate.

And God, what is wrong with Miley Cyrus?

This sure was a pretty er....dramatic VMA's? Now I feel horrible, stupid media, Taylor Swift caught on camera saying 'Sorry for my arm' because she bumped Selena Gomez. But the media has blown it up as it also seems like she says STFU towards one direction. Damn MOugels!
3

Whilst I don't know exactly what she says I really don't think it is "sorry for my arm", the last syllable does not fit with the m sound of arm. It does fit with a p.
Also the reaction of Gomez is one of awkwardness as she first checks the screen and sees they are on it then quickly looks away.

eh, I think Miley looked great :)

people need to give her a break. I don't see anyone else criticizing GaGa for wearing revealing clothing.

that Tylor Swift comment about Harry Styles = SO AWKWARD.

Awful performance but ...i had no idea the movement was about restricting women.I thought it was about equal rights and freedom to act as they chose ,not as people want them to be

You all defending Miley talking about freedom of expression and utter horribleness of restriction or whatnot. That is all very good arguments, but they purposely ignoring the simple fact that people - all people - need restrictions. As I wrote here already, any extreme is bad. Being extremely slutty of extremely frigid is equally bad. The key is in the balance. That what makes us human - constant battle with our impulses to keep being what we want ourselves to be as opposed to what we could be. We want ourself to be better. To have balance and to be happy. Whose who lose these battles become damaged. Then a person stops struggling and lets go of restrictions - society loses a human and gets in its place a self indulging monster capable of rape, murder or war for profit. Simply put, restrictions, both moral based that society puts on us and our inner ethic limitations, are the only things that keep us human.
