NBC Cancels A to Z and Bad Judge, Surprising No One

It was all tricks and no treats for two of NBC's freshman comedies this Halloween. Instead of lavishing A to Z and Bad Judge with delicious candy, the network has canceled the pair of struggling Thursday-night sitcoms, according to The Hollywood Reporter

But if you're the type of person who appreciates a silver lining, the good news is that both series will remain on the air until they've finished out their 13-episode orders. Each show has aired five episodes so far, with eight still to go; production-wise, A to Z has two episodes left to shoot, while Bad Judge has three.

The reason for their demise is right there in the numbers. In their most recent airings, both A to Z and Bad Judge sank below a 1.0 rating in the 18-to-49 demographic, with Bad Judge drawing a 0.9 on Thursday at 9pm and A to Z following with an even lower 0.7 at 9:30pm.

NBC's Thursday nights have been a disaster for a while now, and the end of The Office in 2013 was probably the final nail in the ratings coffin of its once-famous Must-See TV comedy block. Every new sitcom the network has launched on that night in the past few years (Go On1600 PennThe Michael J. Fox ShowSean Saves the World, Welcome to the Family, and now A to Z and Bad Judge) has gone down in flames. Interestingly enough, however, there are still two shows doing worse than A to Z and Bad Judge in the Thursday-at-9pm hour: Fox's Gracepoint and The CW's Reign

Creatively, Bad Judge struggled to find its voice beyond, "Hey look at this sexy judge eat pot brownies and bang firefighters!" Don't worry about series star Kate Walsh, though. She'll land on her feet, and somewhere much better.

As for A to Z, your affinity for it likely depends on the warmth of your heart. Some find the romantic comedy charming, while others have gagged over its sentimentality.

A to Z and Bad Judge join ABC's Manhattan Love Story as the only new fall series to be canceled so far this season.

I have never seen Bad judge but I love A to Z and I have no idea why people think its a bad show? especially when I have yet to see 1 actual legit reason that makes sense perhaps ratings are low due to the time slot maybe other more popular shows on around that time I hope Rashida Jones can save A to Z I am sick of all the good shows being cancelled yet too many shitty ones that should be cancelled stay on you all are just blind

Rashida Jones is tweeting that there is still a chance to save A to Z (which I've never seen) and claiming that it's not canceled yet.

A to Z was worse than HIMYM, the initial source (of all evils)...
I'm only sorry for Kaitlin Thomas... She was in love with them both.

For A to Z and Bad Judge, i would say it was a treat to get to air the last episodes, but to know before the last episodes are filmed that they are cancelled that is even better. It gives them a chance to make a real series finale.

The only sad part about this news is there won't be any more Cristin Milioti on my TV. Until she finds herself another good role anyway. Love that lady.

As I was reading "Every new sitcom the network has launched on that night in the past few years has gone down in flames." I'm reminded of something I heard a writer who-shall-remain-nameless say some years ago.

He had gotten the number of his idol and called him up to ask advice on selling stories as he was not having luck. The man on the other side of the phone had won countless awards and had popular stories in every kind of medium.

When he was asked what this (then) younger writer should do his answer was simple: "Stop writing crap" he said... "If you stop writing crap and write something good it will get published."

I wish the powers-that-be over at NBC could call up the sit-com developers at FOX and ask why they keep bombing like this and get that same advice, because it seems to me they need it!

3 for 3 so far that the only shows cancelled are ones I don't watch. I'm not responsible though as the only way I could contribute to ratings is through hulu viewership.

speaking of cancelled shows; the remaing episodes of "mind games" are hitting the net. episode 6 appeared some time ago and currently 7 through 11 are up. I recommend torrenting over streaming if you're going the 'not paying for each eisode -- giving them movey for a show they cancelled' route.

No, I'm not surprised about the cancelation.

However, I'm surprised they air the remaining episode, which is more respectful for the audience than stopping the story altogether.

As always, good luck to cast and crew in their future projects

I guess they waited for ABC to be the first network to drop the cancellation axe before they did the inevitable, Bad Judge was unwatchable it was so bad, A to Z was ok but it wasn't must see TV and the premise had a deadline which was weird. Any guess on what gets cancelled next... I know it's too soon but I didn't like the McCarthy's and I had my fingers crossed because I like Laurie Metcalf

I wonder what the plan was for A to Z. They date for 8 month. Then what? If the show was supposed to be "the comprehensive account of their relationship" would it follow them into marriage? I don't think Zelda is the type of person to get married after just 8 months of dating. What letter would episode 27 start with?

Hm, I liked A to Z. The story was light, and I really liked the leads and their sidekicks. let's just hope it gets a chance to air the full s1 and that it does not end on some stupid cliffhanger, that would be a total, though way too often these days, bummer. overall, I shall survive this cancelation

Disappointed about A to Z but I do hope that NBC does go ahead and show 13 episodes with the 13th episode being some type of "closure". I thought it was funny & light-hearted and didn't try to hard at being either...unlike alot of present day "comedies".

I wonder with both series still having a couple of episodes to produce whether or not the writers will at least me able to try and wrap things up? I don't watch either series, but I can appreciate it when cancelled shows at least get the opportunity to reward the fans who watched them to the end by giving them a sasitfactory ending.

Wow. I knew that there were a lot of potential bad shows in this TV season. Thus, it comes as no surprise that neither of these were on my deadpool list. I actually liked both shows. Not too much, mind you. I found this timeslot to be weak this season on all the major networks. Meanwhile, I may have to start watching Reign as my schedule for this time will now be free in the future. Call me strange, but I don't like starting a series late. I prefer to only watch shows from the very beginning. But, there's a lot of promise in Reign and I should probably see if it's any good or not.

I really have enjoyed Bad Judge, it was unapologetic in its characters most of the time. Pairing it with a sappy and "smart, modern" romcom was a massive blunder, but NBC is the network of massive blunders. Honestly, if 9/10ths of this freshman class get canceled by the end of the season, I won't be surprised.

Why on earth have A to Z and Manhattan Love story been canceled when the worse-by-far Marry Me is still on? To be clear, both of those shows deserved the axe, though I could have tolerated a half season of each. Marry Me is just bad and unwatchable.

Because there's no real humor in A to Z or Manhattan Love Story, they're vanilla pudding from a box, they're trying to be slightly clever and slightly modern, but they come off just generic and having nothing to say. Marry Me may be irritating, but it has a funnier cast and is more direct.

No, really no humor on Marry Me either. Funny people with bad writing does not make a show funny. Look at Fox's "Mulany".

modern family has all the potential to be funny. it's got an ensemble cast. new girl on the other hand I avoid on premise alone (zooey deschanel playing zooey deschanel, it appearing to be a very generic rom/sit-com)

Bad Judge didn't sit right from the start... I don't understand how it even made it through production, let alone be aired on television.

The title "Bad Judge" held promise too, but now it's kinda ruined. Can you imagine a series about a hard-ass judge who takes his job seriously and lacks a bit of human touch... Even lawyers despise him as he's totally unpredictable. Add in cases of the week + season, an estranged son/daughter, and then some... (I don't know how much a judge can get involved in the cases really... but this premise sounds far more promising with a lawyer's point of view than the judge as my understanding is that judges don't get to interact with defendants and the accused...)

Anyways... not sad about the real Bad Judge hitting the dust! :)
