NBC loses Life

Life no more...

NBC managed to announce a portion of their schedule earlier today without announcing any cancellations. However, immediately after their presentation some of the dirty laundry came out--and it means Life will not go on.

The cop drama will not be back for a second season, says The Los Angeles Times. The news was revealed during a post-presentation question-and-answer session with the media. There was no reason given for the cancellation; though it was approved of by critivs, the show wasn't a ratings beast by any stretch of the imagination. Feel free to blame Leno.

Another nugget of juicy info dropped concerned the future of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. As previously discussed, its two main stars--Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni--have been angling for a pay raise and are currently in negotiations. But NBC today said that the show will go on "with or without" its stars, meaning the network isn't budging and the two actors may be out of work if they don't sign the dotted line now.

Well, let's raise a glass for the fall of one of network television's best new characters, Charlie Crews. He was a delight to watch on Life with all his quirks, and Damian Lewis played him perfectly.

NBC = No Brain Corporation! U morons drop the best tv show ever? Damian Lewis may well be too high level for all the morons in NBC!

That's good TonyaGC. Please do not watch any more network television because you obviously don't know what a good show is. I watched the first episode of this show when it aired and I can honestly compare the experience to having hemroids. Leno isn't any better but I can't believe people were able to enjoy the show with possibly the least realistic character of all time.

Wow, what a disappointment. Life is a fabulous show and deserves to be on TV much more than many other shows out there. I'm really getting tired of Networks canceling my favorite tv shows and I'm going to show it by watching only cable channels from now on.

Ahhh Crap! This is so sad. Life was such a great show. I will very much miss it. NBC seems to think that everyone wants more late night talk shows. Really? Hey NBC, why not just cancel all the prime time shows and just run late night talk shows in all the prime time slots? Media gold right there! Keep it up, and NBC will start to stand for No Body Cares!

Sadly, even the clever, out of the box, great shows can not survive bad, bad, management. NBC did nothing to promote this show, and it still did good. Excellent writing and even better acting from a terrific cast made this the show to watch. Shame on NBC.

This does go down in the annals of tv decision making as one of the worst. Charlie was well written, and had a quirkiness about him that seemed more genuine than contrived. I was not previously a fan of Mr. Lewis, but he was terrific. He played Charlie Crews with a certain Steve McQueen quality. Of course, we hope another network will pick this up: we always hope for that. But in this particular instance, with the 'Jayification' of NBC pushing out a very high quality program, another exec might sense the real opportunity to make NBC's misfortune their good fortune. Meanwhile, show your displeasure to NBC: TURN IT OFF. It is the only way to get the message through to Ben Silverman. I love everything Law and Order, but you can see them all in syndication 12 months later. Buy whatever else you still like on dvd; if it's still there, don't worry, Ben will kill it. It's time to let the peacock and it's advertizers wither and die.moreless

I am of two minds about this piece of news. I loved the show from its very first episode, I think the characters are a joy to watch, the dialogs funny verging on hilarious and Damian Lewis delivery and characterization spot on. So, obviously I am a huge fan of the show and think tv will lose one of its brighter lights. On the other hand the show has come to a sort of natural "conclusion" (even though many avenues to explore were left open) and this way will go out on a high and before jaded people start talking about it jumping the shark (just to be the first to say it, I often think).Okay, I guess I am only trying to find a silver lining... it does suck.Farewell, Charlie, keep you Zen.moreless

This totally sucks! I hate Southland and would never watch Jay Leno in primetime, who cares! Now the only reason to watch is heroes nothing else. They will cancel that next year though!

An intelligent TV show that was genuinely good gets killed by people who forgot why TV shows and movies were invented in the first place: To captivate people and provide superior entertainment. Unfortunately, these days, the only thing that seems to matter is money. With this type of vision-devoid management, NBC seems on its way to follow in the footsteps of Chrysler and GM... Networks that care about quality, on the other hand, will survive.

What an absolute shame. Yet another disappointing decision made by the network executives. I can't believe the number of solid shows that get canceled only to be replaced by simple garbage if not reality trash. The story behind Life was different and the cast was full of quirky characters. The casting, itself, was superb with all the quirkey characters masterfully portrayed. I really am going to miss Crews' quips and quirks and I will most definitely miss Reese's beauty and take-no-garbage personality.I don't mean to put anyone down but I am simply at a loss to see shows like Life According to Jim return year after year when a show like Life simply gets canned. The strike did not help matters at all but, in the end, the blame falls squarely on the shoulders of moronic network people who have absolutely no clue what they are doing.I've become confused as to what the network execs really want these days. Does TV exist to create good television with long-lasting shows or has TV degenerated into nothing more than wasted space with commercials interspersed within the meaningless noise? Shows become too popular and they can end up canceled. There is a disconnect between viewers and executives and it is an abyss that is growing wider and wider. If viewers, like myself, keep having the shows that we fall in love with canceled then why should we watch TV at all? Shows get canceled because of low ratings. Well, if people know that shows they like are going to get canceled regardless of things then some people simply don't watch at all. Other people wait for a show to be released on DVD to watch it. In the end, ratings are losing their meaning due to the use of VCRs, DVRs, Tivo, online streaming, etc.The networks don't care about viewers nor do they really have a clue what viewers even want anymore. We want stability. We want to feel like we actually have choices. TV networks feed us whatever garbage they wish and if we don't like it then tough luck for us.TV writers have gone on strike before and there have been other Guild strikes before. It's time for viewers to go on strike to get the attention of the people high upon the mount. If no one watches the garbage they feed us then no one is watching the ads, either. The advertisers would stop placing ads which would cost the networks and they would realize that, in the end, they really aren't the ones in control. Viwers are the people in control.moreless

i sort of knew in my heart this was on the cards, several rants are running through my head, but it's not anything that hasn't been said before, so i won't bother. i just have to remember that for the people who run these networks, it's not about the quality or originality of programming, or about the critics, or the awards. it's all about the money. that's what counts when it comes to end of year bonus time, not us or what we want. i just wish that these shows got a chance to wrap up at least some of their storylines before they got yanked off the air.

NBC is so dumb! Why do they let go of the good shows? Who was not amazed at the season finale? Crews is too awesome for words. If they drop Chuck, I'm done with this channel.

Lets all be honest shall we, without Mariska and Chris there is no SVU. Without either of them the show will lose about 99% of its viewers (me included). Just pay them whatever they want, I'm sure the network can afford it!

May I just say on behalf of Europeans who somehow managed to catch this amazing show that the absurdity of dropping LIFE is beyond imaginable. Now I realize the tongue-in-cheek humour in 30 Rock about NBC corporate decisions may not be that far-fetched at all. Blimey, those execs must have had a lobotomy! Any channel that picks this up will be richer in more ways than one in the eyes of viewers with a double digit IQ...

God I'm so pissed about Life. I hate NBC so much. They think that they can lose Life just because they have a new cop show: Southland. Unfortunately, Southland is terrible. It's trying to be gritty like The Wire but it's going very poorly. Bad writing, too much speechifying.I'm going to miss the subtle emotional nuances of Life. Please please, another network should pick it up. I hate this. =[

Well, let me see; Leno...Life Life absolutely hands down! Life = prime time Leno = late night and never the twain should meet. I do hope that Damian Lewis talents are recognized and he is cast in another show very soon.

NBC absolutely, unequivocally SUCKS!!! I like Leno but not at the expense of my favorite NBC primetime show. One would think that the few shows NBC has that are worth watching they would try to keep. What a bunch of absolute MORONS!

The decisions of "those in the know" will always be a mystery to me. The likeliness of a show to succeed is inversely proportional to it's popularity with the audience - another pants axing and a great loss to everybody.

If Jay Leno's show will be on monday-friday at 9 PM, the NBC bosses will be having a field day deciding which other show will get the axe to accomadate their "golden boy." Life was a decent show and despite its low ratings didn't deserve to be cancelled. The only show I watch on NBC is Law and Order:SVU and I'll continue to watch it with or without Mariska and Chris.

So sad. I stuck by NBC long after most people had written it off. I watched every season of ER, was a loyal viewer of Chuck, The Office - even Medium. But wow NBC, this Jay Leno thing and killing Life! You just lost me. And what happened to USA maybe picking up Life? Who is more of a "character" than Charlie Crews? -- And IndianaMom, I'm right there with you: "critivs?" Really?

I believe NBC is owned by GE (the soon-to-be cap/trade mogul). So, frankly, I doubt they care if we "like" them or not. It's a good thing they don't need piddly sponsor money; they have nothing left that we want to watch.
