NBC Renews Law & Order: SVU, Chicago Med, and Dick Wolf, Basically

Personally, I think one of the best people to trade places with would be Dick Wolf, master of the Law & Order universe and progenitor of the new bountiful Chicago franchise. I mean, all he has to do is make one show, then add some new words after that show's title, and then he has more shows! Such easy bank.

And now his deal with NBC has been extended and two more of his current shows have been renewed. NBC and Wolf extended their contract to the very futuristic-sounding date of 2020, and Law & Order: SVU was renewed for an 18th season while Chicago Med, the newest addition to the Chicago shows, was granted a second season. Chicago Fire and  Chicago P.D. were previously renewed, meaning Wolfy will again have at least four shows on the air next season. He'll have a shot at half a dozen shows if two more projects make it past the in-development phase, though. Chicago Law, which is like the other Chicago shows but with more shouts of "Objection!," is currently in the works, and Law & Order: You Are the Jury, a reality show in which the audience helps settle disputes, might actually be a real thing. Lord help us all.

What other Chicago franchises should NBC try out? How long do you think Law & Order: SVU will/should go on for?

Law and Order SVU should go on forever, or as long as Mariska Hagrity is willing to do it for. Although props to the other new additions as well, and of course Ice T. Ive always thought SVU was one of the more important social commentary shows on TV. Sure, it gets a bit cheesy sometimes and lifts stories from headlines but these are still stories that need to be told and SVU has a great platform to retell it.

Go Chicago shows, and boo SVU. SVU is past it. The Chicago shows are NBC's new backbone, along with the Blacklist. It's been time for a number of years now. Especially, with the originality of the writers deteriorating each year, constantly ripping the biggest stories from the headlines.

I haven't watched new episodes of SVU for years, but I greatly enjoy the older ones. As long as the writers and actors want to keep it going, it should have the opportunity to keep going. The only "Chicago" franchise I watch with any regularity is Chicago Fire and it is a good show!

Dick's secret: Chicago Cannabis.

I sometimes use episodes of one of the shows from one of the franchises as a hypnotic. Law and order usually works best.
How could these sleep inducing shows get so insanely popular?

I know I've got a great idea for Dick Wolf's next show :
Chicago Pizza
It's about the struggles of a take-away food establishment that has to deliver sustenance to hard working Fire Departments, Police Precincts, Hospitals and Law Firms all over Chicago.....
in 20 minutes or less!!!!!

Chicago Public Library?
Chicago US Mail Local Sorting Office?
Chicago: DMV?
Chicago Public roadway services?
There's plenty more opportunity to expand the franchise.

So, when is the peacock symbol being swapped for a wolf?

Happy for SVU, and a bit hopeful since Warren Leight is leaving as a showrunner. S16 was the worst of the series for me, S17 started out good but then they felt the need to focus all on Liv again and right now it's not the first show I watch on Wednesdays. But hopefully a new show runner can switch things up a bit, Liv/Mariska will always be the star of the show but a star doesn't have to be in the spotlight 24/7, the additional cast makes the show as well and SVU has a pretty good one. Most of all though I hope they focus back on the crimes/cases, SVU today is too much of a soap opera

LAW & ORDER SVU should continue as long as their writers continue delivering great scripts, & the management continues employing great casts such as Kelly Giddish! Only SVU actor I never liked was Meloni. As for the Chicago franchise, the only one I like is Chicago PD. How about a new fresh franchise such as San Diego or Seattle or Orlando?

There was supposed to be a Law & Order: Cape Town in the works, supposedly filming started in 2012 or so then nothing more was heard, shame as I enjoyed the L&O:UK and thought one set in South Africa could be especially interesting.

I was a fan of every Law & Order show except for UK. Even as a seasoned traveler (including UK, Australia, NZ), I found some of the Brit accents of the actors on that show somewhat difficult to understand at times. I believe I also recall that some of the lighting on the show was too dark.

I was thinking of something witty to type considering I already threw out Chicago Sanitation (which wasn't very witty) last week or so when it hit me, CPS.

As in Chicago Public Schools. This will probably be his sixth show. I'm not sure if there's been a show with a public school setting since Boston Public but this is the most likely and viable direction.

I enjoyed the first season of Chicago Fire but it got so far down my list I stopped catching up. Watched 3 episodes of Chicago PD. Nope. Chicago Med? Code Black (did you see that episode with the Lion King???) wins my medical drama slot. if J-Mar leaves the Good Wife is canceled, that might cause me to give Chicago Law a chance.

Chicago Law & Law & Order: You Are the Jury? Are you serious?

just stop already. It's like its a competition between him and Shonda on who can take over their network first.

I'm not a Shonda fan, I've seen her pull some stunts/say some things I don't like, but I do love HTGAWM and I was also a fan of Private Practice and all I know is that when it comes to writing rape stories I trust Shonda more than I trust the Dick universe (okay perhaps mostly Warren Leight)

"the purpose of tv shows/series is to have & build an audience: that's done by entertaining. Fiction doesn't require accuracy"

The purpose of setting is to establish the events of the fiction in relation to things the audience already knows. If you have, say, a courtroom drama where the judge routinely pulls out a pistol and shoots at the defense attorney for objecting to evidence proffers, the audience's willing suspenstion of disbelief is going to evaporate because the audience members know that judges do not routinely shoot at people in the courtroom.
That's not to say that you can't Hollywood it up a bit. In Hollywood, cars that are in accidents INVARIABLY burst into flames and explode just as the heroes pull the victims to safety. In real life, cars rarely burn and almost never explode. It is, at least, theoretically possible that a car that was in an accident might catch fire, and might even explode.

On the other hand, there is approximately zero chance that a person who knows as little about criminal law as the central character on HTGAWM would be hired by a law school. There's very little possibility that a person of the ethics displayed by the central character of HTGAWM would be practicing law, because they would have been disbarred and likely prosecuted.

I think you've confused my complaint for something it is not. I'm not complaining that it isn't 100% accurate. I'm complaining that it is 0% accurate. It is literally true that "The Magicians" is more like what a real graduate program is like than is HTGAWM like what a real law school is like.

docspector, the purpose of tv shows/series is to have & build an audience: that's done by entertaining. Fiction doesn't require accuracy; nothing requires the robotic incorrect so-called political correctness / leftist propaganda. While "HTGAWM" is disgusting, legal inaccuracy isn't the problem. Besides, I thought you have a who cares attitude (from your other comment).

Back when they decided to go all-in on Jay Leno, NBC basically told Hollywood "Get bent! We don't need you." When that blew up in NBC's face, Dick Wolf was basically the only producer who still wanted to work with them.

Wow. Just wow. Why not go after a better producer whose days aren't behind him? Dick Wolf. Just no creativity. Chicago Chicago Chicago Chicago chicago chicago! chicago? CHicago Chicago CHICAGO! Dick Wolf was great with L&O in the 90s. That's it. He's leveraged his 90s/early aughts success with L&O into an out of control Chicago run empire of mediocrity. And with the only network dumb enough to give him that. One show is one thing. Yeah, I could see Wolfie trying to get one on the air at ABC, etc. But four Chicago comfort food shows? Hell no. NBC clearly just doesn't know what they're doing.

Feb 06, 2016
The thing is, prior to Warren Leight, episodes weren't ripped from the headlines verbatim. They writers were good enough to use little pieces from the headline that weren't so blatantly obvious so you wouldn't know where the episode was going after 5 minutes.

Like the Season 5 episode, Mean. It was loosely based on the Shanda Sharer murder, which happened 12 years before this episode aired. And the only hint to the real story was one of the accused testifying that the victim called for her mommy.

Not as obvious as episodes from last season, like Spousal Privilege, which you could tell from the start it was about Ray Rice. Or Glasgowman, which was an almost total ripoff of the real life Slender Man case is Wisconsin.

I don't know..... I remember many Eps of the original L&O and the SUV eps mirroring stories I would read about in the New York papers or TV news, and I would go, "hey, this is just like that one story in the paper about....." Just that those stories ("headlines") weren't as well known to the rest of the country.

Back in the olden days, NBC had AFC games, CBS had NFC games, and ABC had Monday Night Football. Then Fox showed up, piled money on the table, and took the NFC away from CBS. So CBS piled money up on the table, and took the AFC away from NBC. Sunday Night Football has been successful for NBC, but they used to have day games.

ABC consolidated its sports programming under the ESPN branding. Also deep in the past, ABC used to carry Olympic games; they've left that to NBC/Universal now. ESPN gets highlights, which is all they need.
Reply

Feb 08, 2016
CBS used to carry the winter Olympics at one point.

Some of the stuff they've moved to ESPN has worked out really well. Some hasn't. Some stuff people had just watched because it was on ABC. National Championship worked out well in the ratings (it's clear that people really seek it out). Monday Night Football itself used to be bigger. It kinda annoys me when it seems like no one is watching something on ESPN but it would be assumed as "big time" and draw more ratings because depending on the event, the audience still tends to fall into habit and notice ABC first. And it used to get the bigger things.
Flag
Feb 07, 2016
Airing these games in primetime has been a real blessing for NBC and Thursday Night Football will only help them build on that. The effect it has on the ratings system makes a person wonder why ABC dropped Monday Night Football in the first place? Seems like such a bad idea now.

What a brilliant move Fox made in the 90s by finangling NFL rights. It got them a seat at the table; suddenly every market HAD to have a Fox affiliate. And it as a result became a legitimate major network.
