And in not-so-surprising news, NBC has renewed its freshman singing-sensation series Smash for a second season. The drama premiered in early February to positive reviews and much fanfare, and has already become the network's highest-rated scripted show with a 2.6 average in the adult demo. But I guess that says more about the state of NBC than it does the show itself.
Smash is the second new scripted series to earn a renewal from NBC; supernatural procedural Grimm was the first new NBC show to be renewed, last week. Smash's Monday-night lead-in, The Voice was also previously renewed, establishing "Music Mondays" as a sure bet for NBC's 2012-2013 season. That leaves Whitney, Are You There, Chelsea?, Up All Night, Bent, and Awake as NBC's new shows that are still waiting on a decision. If I had to guess, it would be no, no, yes, no, maybe—in that order.
Smash stars former American Idol contestant Katharine McPhee as a hopeful Broadway star looking to shine in a musical based on Marilyn Monroe. Debra Messing, Megan Hilty, and Anjelica Huston also star.
As for the rest of NBC's slate, we're still waiting on word on Community's fate, and we'll be right there for the party/sh*tstorm that follows.
