NBC Stokes Chicago Fire With a Full-season Order

Well, this was rather unexpected. NBC has ordered a full season of the surprise "hit" Chicago Fire following a series-high 2.2 rating in the adult demo last night, says The Hollywood Reporter. NBC has ordered the back nine, bringing the total episode count of the first season to 22.

Last night's episode was helped by a special episode of The Voice as a lead-in, boosting its numbers a jumbo 44 percent over the previous episode's 1.6 rating. Last night's 2.2 was good for second place, just behind CBS's CSI (2.3) and just ahead of ABC's critically adored Nashville (2.0).

The Voice has been a boon for other NBC shows, too. Revolution also benefitted from the singing sensation and was picked up for a full-season order last month. NBC has also ordered full seasons of The New Normal and Go On.

One of Chicago Fire's biggest supporters has been some creature named Lady Gaga, who's been promoting the show heavily to her 31 million Twitter followers. Gaga happens to be dating star Taylor Kinney. Hey Gaga, can you tell your people to give Last Resort a chance? Thanks!

The first season was pretty good, but the new season has bumped it up a notch, it's great.

I'm glad that they are giving Chicago Fire another chance. We need that type of show on air. You get to learn about the characters as well as some firefighter stuff in the process. My brother is wanting to become a firefighter and he loves this show! So do I!

Glad to hear that, it's about time a non cop related drama gets noticed.

I'm loving Chicago Fire. I'm glad it got a back order.

This Dead Pool everyone is talking about sounds like an Arrow villain, but obviously you guys have been betting on cancellations. I'll have to look it up, it sounds like fun. Oh yeah, and glad you lost on this one. :)

And my Dead Pool continues to dive into negative digits. At this point, I just have to believe the networks are f***ing with us.

G-D Dead Pool is dead anyway. (Not really, we're still going to finish it, but COME ON WHEN IS SOMETHING GOING TO DIE?)

some actor from Last Resort should hook up with Katy Perry or Rihanna (or else ) to give a huge boost for the show then)

Typically I don't really care if a show I don't watch gets picked up or not... but I do care when BETTER shows can't seem to find audiences while an average-at-best show like this does. It saddens me. =(

This show is is hugely BELOW average but agreed.

I'm so glad to hear this. Chicago Fire really isn't that bad. I enjoy it more than Beauty and The Beast.

This is such a tragic comment. It's good that the show is picked up because (1) it isn't that bad. SHOULDN'T IT BE ACTUALLY GOOD? And (2) it's better than Beauty and the Beast which is arguably the worst of the new shows this season. That's like saying you're glad you got herpes because it's better than HIV.

THANK YOU !! Totally agree!

I don't hate this show, but I certainly don't love it either. The problem I'm having is...how can this show get picked up, when such a great show like "Awake" got canceled last year!

Let Awake go. Chicago Fire's existence isn't contingent on being better than Awake.

You're right, of course...but that doesn't stop me from missing something that might have been great, given a chance.

Well, this is one of the bigger surprises of the season. Luckily I have miraculously managed (so far) to dodge all the renewal bullets in my Dead Pool selection. I didn't even have this one on my list. The only thing lacking now are cancellations. Come on now, Beauty and the Beast, Partners and The Mob Doctor. Take one for the team and sacrifice yourselves. I need the points.

The downside with the renewal of Chicago Fire is that it once again shows the fickleness ot TV viewers. One would imagine that Chicago Fire and Last Resort would attract the same kind of audience, except that LR would attract more viewers because it's obviously better. Not so. Last Resort is struggling even though it deserves success much more than CF.

They are really different shows. Chicago Fire is basically a hero drama vs Last Resort doesn't have a single hero on it (they made Seals into sorta bad guys). I think the trend of having all "complex" "flawed" characters doesn't hit home for everyone. Not all actors can pull it off and still generate the sort of audience attachment necessary to maintain dramatic tension: Damien Lewis does it in Homeland, and Giancarlo Esposito did it Breaking Bad. But without someone to root for, IMO people tend to tune out.

Unfortunately Last Resort is in a horrible timeslot for what it is, and yes, it's very good. And so is Nashville which I'm sure if I bothered to watch Chicago Fire I would find it not nearly as good as Nashville...

But these are issues of comparison. Just because one story has better writing than another doesn't necessary mean the former will have a larger audience, nor does it invalidate the existence of the latter.

Hey if Last Resort still holds up to the the standards of the pilot it shouldn't need such a cheap trick, but Chicago Fire really, really would.

a lot of people in the deadpool just got hit

Just one episode getting a boost to a mediocre 2.2, largely because of The Voice doesn't warrant a renewal.

I never watch shows like The Voice, American Idol, X Factor, etc. I hate that kind of stuff. I've also never watched Chicago Fire because my favourite show right now is Nashville, on at the same time.

Yay, Chicago Fire! That's great news. This show keeps getting better and better every week, so I think it will keep some of its new boost in ratings.

yes, and thank you NBC.

Congrats for Chigaco Fire. This is at least proof that picking up extra scripts of a show isn't another way of saying "cancelled." That being said, Last Resort (which was amazing tonight btw) really deserves a full 22-episode order and many more seasons after that. Hoping for some awesome ratings tomorrow, and ABC to follow suit with NBC.

As we've seen just being a good show is not enough. I wonder what the TV schedule would look like if America had good taste in TV...

These are not surprise hits... put any show on after The Voice, people! Chicaco Fire and Revolution are awful. Animal Practice could have done soooo much better if it hadn't been left on its own.
