Netflix Renews Sense8 for Season 2

Last month, Sense8 producer J. Michael Straczynski told reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour that he was "cautiously optimistic" about the prospects of a Season 2 renewal. Well, word has finally arrived from our overlords Netflix regarding the show's future and it's definitely what some would consider "good news."

Much like the series itself, the announcement that the Wachowskis' brain-mushing drama will be back for round two was a little more complex than the renewals for most shows. In honor of the August 8 birthday that is shared by the show's main characters, the cast posted a video on Twitter Saturday morning wishing all a happy birthday. After a bunch of celebratory singing, they shared the news about the pickup for Season 2. You can watch the announcement below:

Are you excited about Sense8's renewal?

Meh. It was fun in parts, but pretty badly written and corny.

Just watched this show after seeing it recommended on bingeout.com. Great plot but don't see this show lasting more than a few seasons.

It's not supposed to run for more than a few seasons. The show creators wrote the entire story from start to end before starting season 1 shooting and intend to wrap it up within 5 seasons.

I was pretty disappointed with the show on the whole, though I'm not sure what I suspected. I felt there was a lot of potential that was squandered through cheesy dialogue and ideas being hammered into us that really didn't need so much explaining. But, I'm glad it's been renewed for season two, truth be told, because I think now it has room to fulfill some of that potential and get on with the story. I don't like the fact that the show runners have already decided it's a "five year show" not knowing if it will survive a second season, but oh well.

The happy birthday video was cute.

I'm kind of in the minority of people who neither hated nor loved it. It had some good moments but nothing really blew me away. But the potential was there and now that we're through the exposition (I hope!) the second season has a lot of potential for improvement.

I feel the same! I did show us some very interesting concept and ideas, but I don't feel like they used its full potential. Too much time was spent on making us understand how it works. Now that it's through, I guess we can expect some more story driven content instead of some introduction.

Three episodes into season 1 and still haven't made up my mind about this show yet. Its been so slow at times but each episode has done just enough to convince me to watch the next one.

The first three episodes are slower and weirder than the rest of the show. You should really continue watching to feel the full scope of this show :) But it's still not for anyone, I can totally see how some people dislike the show. And I can imagine the first 3 episodes giving you a feeling of "WTF am I watching?!" :P

I'm going to give it a couple more episodes to see if it starts to grab me but they need to start moving the central plot forward rather than just having all these separate stories, some of which aren't particularly interesting.

I would recommend watching it anyway. The bad critical reviews were based on the first three episodes which were slow and unfocused but after that it quickly improves. I personally think this is the best show on Netflix Original lineup.

..i dare you to name me another scene that is as gloriously kinky as that Polysexual Sense8 Orgy Scene. ;)

- that was/is truly celluloid HallOfFame.

& the 'Whats Up' sing-a-long was also pretty amazing in capturing a mood & feeling ..especially those that binge watch... we were all right there with them.

Well, how about the sex scene in the pilot between Nomi and Amanita! Not knowing anything you just barely see 2 people having sex, and you don't get it until the slimy dildo hits the floor! :)

sense8-ional NEWS! And another 12 hours without sleep. (sigh)
I binge-watched the whole thing in one session. When it ended i couldn't stop shaking. But that was because i drank too much Red Bull. It should come with a warning: binge-watching Sense8 is hazardous to your health. It can cause eye strain, severely disturb your circadian rhythm and in the end you will be craving for more.
So yes, I'm over the moon. Thank you Netflix.

I may have been slowly melting away due to this insufferable, permeating heat, but this news just made this week(end) become at least slightly more bearable.

Good call, Netflix! Glad that the happy announcement finally came. With that the platform continues to rule the TV landscape this year. And I'll be looking forward both to more sensates and more Daredevil.

Why is "good news" in quotations? Is it because this it actually GREAT news?

Good news I guess. I don't think the show was ever great but at least it got incrementally more watchable as it went along. Having the season finish with another case of busting one of them out of captivity wasn't all that satisfying - something more mythological would have been better. This season seems more like a prologue than a first chapter. Maybe the writers needed this to get to the meat of the story. Fingers crossed that season 2 takes it to the next level.

Nice, happy to see it getting a 2nd season. Almost quit on it after 4-5 episodes, so glad I stuck it out, it was so worth it.
Did they wait until 8 of August because of this birthday thing? Or did Netflix have to wait to see if this huge investment paid off or not?

Probably a bit of both. I mean Netflix renewed Daredevil after like 3 days because of the immense demand. Sense8 probably didn't get quite the same viewership, especially given how lopsided the early season was, so they probably wanted to wait and see if viewership picked up later on. But I have no doubt that announcing it on August 8 is specifically for the tie in to the characters.

I think most everyone is pretty excited to see just how much action can be thrown into this now that their connections are more... solidified? They're practically a one-man Ocean's 11 (8) with all their skills at once. Or, I suppose Leverage would be an easier comparison overall.

Very cool, loved the character development. I'm curious how they will continue this story. Because its feels like season 2 will be more action pact with the connections under control.

yup. Having gay characters is now gay propoganda. There was one scene at a parade and it was important too as it led to Nomi in the hands of Whipsers so it wasn't even a waste. Think its just easier if you admit to yourself what you really have a problem with :/

I had no problems with the gay characters but just found the constant promoting of the gay pride movement to be over the top. I get it Lito/Nomi are gay but must I then have to endure all these needlessly long sex scenes just toreiterate this fact. All it did was slow down the pacing of the show and interrupted what was otherwise riveting story telling. The screen time would have been much better spent giving the viewer some background/flashback scenes on Daryl Hannah's character and her sense8 group with Naveen.

Bullshit! If Riley were gay and would constantly make out with her lipstick lesbian lover nobody would complain. But because show bucked the cliche and featured macho latin lover gay man and trans woman it's gay propaganda, icky, pointless and distracting.

Just for you they can make season 2 all about everyone in the cast hating the homosexual characters and abusing/vilifying/torturing them at every opportunity with no consequences. Wouldn't that be fun.
