New Fox Schedule Downsizes American Idol

Fox revealed its 2010-2011 schedule to reporters in a conference call this morning, and the network will be reducing—yes, reducing—the air time for its biggest hit, American Idol.

When American Idol returns in early 2011 without Simon Cowell, its Tuesday performance show will be reduced to 90 minutes and its Wednesday results show will be cut in half, to 30 minutes. Fox said it listened to feedback from viewers, who rightfully thought the show was too bloated. But still, reducing the biggest moneymaker in television? Is this the network recognizing that Idol hit its peak several seasons ago, or is it a crafty ploy to give some new series (which will be slotted after American Idol) an extra boost?

Breakout hit Glee will NOT have an extended break next season, and has landed the coveted post-Super-Bowl slot. Because nothing goes together like 500-pound men in tights who like to pummel each other and jazz hands. Actually, I guess they do go together.

Aside from that, the schedule looks awfully familiar, with House on Mondays, Glee on Tuesdays, and Bones and Fringe sitting tight on Thursdays. Lie to Me will kick off Wednesdays at 8pm in the fall, and Human Target will pair with newbie The Good Guys on Fridays.

Among the new shows, Texas oil-drama (do I smell a new genre!?) Lonestar follows House on Mondays, and gerund-y, confusingly named sitcoms Raising Hope (previously Keep Hope Alive) and Will Arnett's Running Wilde (previously Wilde Kingdom) will back up Glee on Tuesdays. Come midseason, Chicago-cop drama Ride-Along takes over for Lonestar, comedy Mixed Signals slides into Tuesday, Raising Hope moves to Wednesdays, and Bob's Burgers slips into the Sunday animation block at 8:30pm, pushing American Dad! to 7:30pm.

Also picked up, but not thrown onto the schedule yet, is Steven Spielberg's Terra Nova, which is bound to be one of the most buzzed-about shows of the new season. The drama is like an updated Land of the Lost, with a family transported back to the time of dinosaurs.

ps. the cleveland show is a complete waste of time. Its disgusting. You use to be respectable. Shows like dark angel and bones. What happen? do you think people are all that stupid and want to watch this garbage? And have the time we miss the Simpson do to games. And what happen to past lives? That show had huge potention. and you dropped it. Why I was hooked I;m sure many other viewers felt the same way. Lessons for you to learn: 1. loss the reality crap
2. drop cleveland
3. dont let anything interfere with the simpsons
4. did i mention get rid of reality shows???
5. put some decent family comedy shows on

Any questions. Its a no brain er.

Bones, the simpons are about it. Once in a while american dad and family guy but they both get old quick. Seriously can we et some descent shows. What is with all the brain dead reality shows? Don't you have any decent writers? As viewers we are sick of this garbage. We are smart people. We want shows with intelligence in them. Not a bunch of idiots who think they can sing or dance. Or a bunch of idiots living in a house swearing and sleeping around and being violent. Give us some credit.

I'm glad that 24 is gone it was its time, but I think Human Target should be on Mondays after House ! I hope that Human Target survives on Friday cause I really like the show. Other than that it looks like another banging line-up FOX !

I'm surprised they didn't put Human Target on after the Super Bowl since that show seems a little more appropriate for the target audience of the Super Bowl and could use the ratings boost more. Not that I really care, I live outside the US in a country that loves soccer, hup Holland hup! so all that stuff goes right passed me

House, Glee, Bones, and Fringe are the only good shows. Raising Hope could be good, depends on who's in the cast. the rest is crap, especially Sunday night. and let's not kid ourselves, nobody cares about American Idol without Simon. and they don't even need 30 minutes for results. they could tell bottom three in one commercial break during Glee, then next commercial break send one person back, then next commercial break send somebody home. or just tell the person who left at the beginning of the following week's episode. i also think they should put Fringe on Mondays with House or somehting, Thursday is packed on every channel, we need to populate Monday with some worthwhile shows other than Chuck and Castle

American Idol is fading. I don't see much creativity in this schedule. Fox is just riding their winning horses.

WOW! I thought Human Target got renewed! Friday night on FOX=Cancelled. Hey FOX just in case you forgot New Amsterdam, Dollhouse, Terminator, John Doe, Firefly all cancelled courtesy of FOX Friday.

why the hell did you renew human target just to cancell it because its ratings will suck in the time slot of death?

Put Human Target on Mondays? Hasn't Fox learned not to put shows on Friday? X-Files has been the only successful Friday show and then they moved that. Stupid Fox.

American Idol taking up so much time is one of the major reasons its struggling for viewers, people got sick of it.

Its great that Glee doesn't get an ungodly hiatus midseason either :D

Interesting Fox is certainly planning for the future, I don't know if AI will be the #1 show next season but I'm sure it'll at least be a Top 20 hit which is a good thing for Fox, at least until the X-Factor debuts. The new Will Arnett show looks kind of lame, I'm sensing a quick cancel?

They're putting The Good Guys on Friday? Damn, I was hoping it would actually survive.

I never liked American Idol. I've never voted for any contestant ever. I could live without Bones, American Dad, Hell's Kitchen, and of course Kitchen Nightmares. When will those shows be dropped? I curse all reality shows, bad cartoons, and overhyped CSI wannabees.
