New Show: A Peek Inside Warehouse 13

Can't wait to see what's in this warehouse.

The new SciFi Channel series Warehouse 13 is kind of like "Men in Black," only instead of aliens, the super-secret agents of Warehouse 13 hunt for tchotchkes -- very dangerous tchotchkes.

You might say Warehouse 13 -- the facility in the title of this new series that premiers tonight,Tuesday (7/7, 9 p.m. Eastern) -- is a veritable Pandora's Box of evil objects. As it happens, Pandora's Box is one of the objects that happens to be stored away for safekeeping in this top-secret storehouse located in the middle of nowhere, South Dakota.

Here's the backstory according to the facility's quirky curator, warehouse caretaker Artie Nielsen (yes, as in "Nielsen" ratings), played by Saul Rubinek: This warehouse was established by the U.S. Secret Service in 1898 as a repository for dangerous objects with the potential to wreak havoc on the world, such as the powerful talisman that figures into the premiere plotline, and less-dangerous objects, such as inventions deemed so far ahead of their time that the world was not ready for them. One example: Two-way video communications devices said to have been invented in the 1920s by the inventor of television, Philo Farnsworth.

However, like the footloose aliens of "Men in Black," plenty of objects are still out there in the world wreaking havoc. And two mismatched Secret Service agents (played by Joanne Kelly and Eddie McClintock) -- an odd couple in an odditorium -- are assigned to track them down.

With a name reminiscent of other top-secret government locations, whether real or imagined (Area 51, anyone?), Warehouse 13 is the new, original series that SciFi is using to usher in the new era of SyFy, the fresh identity the channel adopts today as well.

Warehouse 13 is a fun concept that combined history and mystery. Though SyFy is positioning the show as a dramedy, the show could evolve into one of the pleasant surprises of summer TV if the producers find the right balance of drama and comedy, perhaps leaning more toward the latter.

One thing they have in their favor already: With a warehouse jammed to the rafters with really cool, mysterious objects, the producers of Warehouse 13 shouldn't run out of story ideas anytime soon.

Although Farnsworth is known for inventing the first completely electronic television; Scotsman John Logie Baird successfully demonstrated the world's first working electro-mechanical television system in London in January 1926, he also demonstrated the world's first colour transmission on July 3, 1928.

Same old same old. SciFi, oh excuse me SyFy (the name is lame). I will agree with someone below who said there was a lack of good SciFi (get that? SCIENCE FICTION hence SciFi) on this channel. Wrestling does not count, ghost hunters (and whatever crap goes with it) does not count. At least this show fits the genre, but hey, it's no Stargate. It's sort of like a lamer version of Eureka, but Eureka is still better. SciFi has been a disappointment. Crappy ending for Battlestar Galactica, killing the Stargates (still waiting for the Atlantis movie), new Stargate looks like Star Trek with a lame plot, and Sanctuary? Please, Amanda Tapping is a) really a blonde, and b) BTW the accent sounds really lame, she barely spent any time in England and was moved to Canada by three. Now this Warehouse 13? Please. Change the name back and bring back the quality of show we used to have. And get some better people for these parts, sheesh, who's the casting director anymore?moreless

This looks like The Lost Room, which I love so I am looking forward to seeing it.

  • GODHOOD

Sounds more like Friday the 13th The Series meets The X-Files meets Eureka, I think I'll avoid this one.

Sounds like it was cobbled together from Sanctuary, Eureka, and The Lost Room. I guess it's where they store the artifacts from those shows, alien artifacts from Stargate SG1 (the one that didn't end up at Area 51), and the venerable old "Sci-Fi" channel logo. I'll tune-in though. It may be fun.
