News Briefs: ABC Forecloses on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

CANCELLATION AND SCHEDULIZATION NEWS

... It's a tough housing market even for shows about building houses. ABC has canceled its reality series Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The final episode will air January 13, ending the series' nine-season run, but ABC plans on producing one-off specials. Probably when the president of ABC needs a new deck overlooking his infinity pool. [ABC, via press release]

... CBS has decided to switch up its schedule a bit before heading into 2012. Starting February 17, Undercover Boss will move to Friday nights at 8pm, pushing A Gifted Man back to 9pm, which is either a sign that CBS wants to feed viewers into the supernatural medical drama or a sign that it's giving up on the supernatural medical drama. Taking Undercover Boss's Sunday slot at 8pm will be The Amazing Race, starting on February 19. When A Gifted Man finishes its run, CSI: NY will take over the Friday at 9pm slot, beginning on March 30. I know, I can't keep track of all this nonsense either. But stay tuned, we're aiming to post a detailed midseason schedule for all the networks next week. [Deadline Hollywood]

... You love Psych! It'll return February 29! [E! Online]

DEVELOPMENT NEWS

... FX is teaming up with British "comedian" Russell Brand for a late-night talk show. So far the deal is for six episodes that will start airing sometime this spring. It sounds like Brand will host the thing in front of a live audience and talk about pop culture and current events. The only thing that gets me kind of excited about it is that Troy Miller (Mr. Show, Flight of the Conchords) is producing. [Deadline Hollywood]

... In more Russell Brand news (gag), Fox has purchased an animated comedy co-created and voiced by the comic. Details of the project are being kept under wraps at the moment. At this point, I'd trade Brand back to England in exchange for keeping Gwyneth Paltrow. That's how much I'm over him. [Deadline Hollywood]

... CBS TV Distribution has purchased syndication rights for TV Land's Hot in Cleveland, starring Betty White. That'll get those 18-49 demo numbers up. [Deadline Hollywood]

... CBS is bringing back Person to Person, the 1950s interview show hosted by the legendary Edward R. Murrow. That'll get those 18-49 demo numbers up. [NY Times]

... USA is developing a new drama based on Kate Warne, the country's first female detective. The show will be set in 1856 and detail some of Warne's triumphs, like when she helped prevent the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and served as a spy for the Union during the Civil War. [Deadline Hollywood]

DO-NOT-BELIEVE-THIS NEWS

... The nerd-ernet is ablaze with people talking about another Firefly revival. This time Netflix is said to be the one toying with bringing it back. But really, it's just one dude who said it would be a good idea. However, if you must get excited, go ahead. [Zap2It]

DUH-DOI NEWS

... The Parents Television Council, which would rather scoop out your children's eyeballs than let them see cleavage on television, is mad that Howard Stern is joining America's Got Talent as the new judge. Shocker! [TMZ]

... Hey Taccado! Justin Bieber is performing on The X Factor's finale, which is scheduled for December 22. It's your lucky day. [Hollywood Life]

Too bad Extreme Makeover - Home Edition has been cancelled, the show was really good in more than just one way. Still, who knows, they might come back.

  • PennyJordan1

So excited for Russell Brands talk show! Sounds like Russell Howard's Good News meets the big fat quiz of the year. Anyone who hasn't seen the big fat quiz of the year with Russell Brand in it, pre-Perry years, should go watch it! The best way to get excited about it!

  • NeeUyank

ehm, with all this rescheduling, where will CBS fit "blue bloods"??

  • AnoukvdZee

They're always saying it would be a good idea to bring Firefly back. I'll see it first, then believe it ;)

I used to love watching Extreme Home Makeover, until I realised that the amount of money put into one extremely over-extravagant home with too much space and too much gadgets, would have been better spent if they used it to build an entire block of normal sized homes. They could have built an entire city by now, which seems to me to be an incredible waste of money that could have been used to help much more people.

I knew Home makeover would go under. It has been screwed since they moved it to Friday's.

I guess this means the nation's long makeover nightmare is over. Wasn't this show an offshoot of the brief makeover craze where people would go through plastic surgery on TV?

  • Faithin1

Maybe Whedon would write Book Firefly, and make it a prequel all about Shepherd Book. He had a lot of mystery, and could probably work... Why do I wish for these?

I'm sure there are people more annoying than Russell Brand, I'm just having a hard time coming up with them.

  • Writerpatrick

I doubt CBS will be getting Edward R. Murrow back for Person to Person. :) Although I could see it as a vehicle--or dumping ground--for Katie Couric.

  • jaden84

Am glad USA is bringing back early and not waiting till near summer time.

  • bonezrulz05

If Russell Brand is handled right and handles his role right, this could be hilarious. If not, it'll be a jaw-dropping disaster.

  • Silver_Sword_14

I've always been a fan of period pieces, so I'm looking forward to the series about Kate Warne. Hopefully, it works on USA and doesn't end up being cheesy.

  • staind47

My dad is gonna be pissed about Extreme Makeover Home Edition.

  • Geek_Queen

I hope A Gifted Man gets, at least, another season. Throughout the season, the series has been getting more and more interesting (to me, anyway).

  • scholtemarco

    Haha. Love Howard Stern.

  • silverscreenluv

Well, if they're gonna do a Firefly revival, they better do it soon. Fillion ain't getting any younger, but he is getting a mite paunchy around the edges on Castle. As far as I'm concerned that's irrelevant anyway because they can't do Firefly now that Walsh is gone - he was the best character (no offense to Baldwin, Jayne was awesome too). I guess you could just ignore the fact that the Serenity movie train-wreck happened. That's what I vote for if they bring it back.

No great shock about EMHE - Ty Pennington reportedly has his own talk show or something next year(I read that a while ago) so without him there is no show it's that simple.

While I would LOVE more fIREFLY I don't think it'll ever happen Nathan Fillion is way too busy and so is Joss Whedon so it just shouldn't happen without them.

  • dragon22a

Maybe they can do a Firefly movie or miniseries like Serenity. Other than that I don't see how it could work while Fillion is still on Castle and Baccarin on Homeland. It cannot be a reboot and without the main characters it would not be the same. They would already have to make do without Wash and Book.

  • Arch_Angel88

How many times have we been mercilessly teased with the possibility of a Firefly revival? It's a perpetual cycle of hope and disappointment. I'm not going to get my hopes up this time. I'm not . . . . DAMN! I hate you Netflix.

Russel Brand has the type of personality that is only funny in 5 minute interviews. If he actually acts like that while not on camera, being around him would be EXHAUSTING.

Tim, I'd take Russel Brand AND Gwenyth Paltrow, if you took Justin Bieber. No? Okay, just take him for one year. Still No? . . . .Yeah, I wouldn't make that trade either.

Yes, take the deal. Let's make it a Justin Bieber free year. :)

    • docspector

The fact that some of the actors are currently under contract on other shows kind of throws a bucket of cold water on that ember, doesn't it? I mean, Nathan Fillion has his dance card pretty full already, and Alan Tudyk is on Suburgatory (although his character is currently dead, so I guess they COULD work around that...)
I suppose you COULD do a "Spartacus"/"Caprica", and make a prequel series (either with many of the same actors playing the same roles or not, depending on whether you wanted to follow the "Spartacus Gods of the Arena" model or the "Caprica" model.

kind of lame that Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is canceled. never watched it or anything but it clearly was actually doing something good. I was over Russell Brand as soon as I knew who he was. he's annoying and not funny.

I love Firefly, but I wish everybody would shut up about it coming back. it's never coming back as long as Nathan Fillion has Castle. everybody needs to get real

I want to know what the hell is going on with Terra Nova! Not knowing if it is going to get cancelled or renewed is killing me.
