News Briefs: Amazon Is Thinking About Saving Pan Am

ANOTHER "MAYBE THIS SHOW ISN'T CANCELED" BIT OF NEWS

... Amazon is the latest to give TV fans false hope that their favorite show isn't really canceled. The super bookstore is now in the original programming game (and therefore in the recycled programming game), and is in talks with Sony Pictures TV to rescue ABC's canceled Pan Am from death. Pan Am might not be a huge hit in the U.S., but it's big in Europe and recently won the Rose d'Or award for Best Series, the European equivalent to the Emmy. Then again, soccer is the biggest sport in Europe, so keep that in mind. [Deadline Hollywood]

Fox came in second with an average of 8.87 million viewers, resulting in the largest margin of victory in 23 years, according to CBS. We have to sift through utter dung like The Bachelor and ...ette, Survivor, Dancing with the Doofs, American Idol and the raft of imitators - and it takes the good taste of a European awards committee to step up. Amazon just keeps getting better and better - I'm going to go spend $250 there as soon as I finish posting this.

Seriously, the production value of this series alone made it worth saving. Though it'll probably remain mucho unappreciated by the heathens who watch the above trash. Mencken *really* had it right with the famous "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public!" Though I have to admit *some* really good shows do manage to, somehow, manage to survive in spite of the hordes of room-temperature IQed audiences apparently comprising the Nielson-monitored viewers. Then again, how smart can you be to allow someone to monitor your private life?

Amazon, save your money, that's not the one, it will bring in neither cachet nor money. It's too campy, too schlocky, and too expensive for a web-exclusive.

Oh man, Fox is #2, how apt. I think it's even more impressive that CBS won without a significant sports ratings-booster the way Fox and NBC had for this last year.

Music on VH1? That'll never work.

Jim Parsons is gay? I never would have guessed from his date to all the awards shows being a guy. Still, I didn't know he was "hollywood-out", as it were, I hope that NYT article didn't just accidentally out him.

Yes please, save Pan Am!

It's a great show. I'm from Brazil and I love it!

About Pan Am : The show is not that popular in Europe. Yes, it went on in all the country's. The BBC even showed it twice. (As it went unnoticed the first time around), but with no impact. Prison Break S1 was the last American series that had a real effect on viewers.

About the Golden Rose : It are Swiss television awards that are all about selfserving from people inside the buisness and are of no consequence for us viewers.

I didn't even read one article mentioning Pan Am had won. It seemed to me that all the caracters were like fish in a bowl, no less no more. Like a lighted aquarium in the background, while doing other things... I did had high hopes though

that sport u're talkin about it's simply called FOOTBALL evreywhere, soccer is a term people allover US invented !

Football is the biggest sport all over the world. That it is to complex for the retards who call it soccer is another matter.
Reply
Flag
Soccer sucks, get over it.
Reply
Flag
LOL "to complex"?.....you did not just f'ing say that...there are 2 rules:....

1:you kick a ball into a humongous net

2: if someone even looks at you funny you pretend like he kicked you in the shin and roll around on the ground

....man if you said cricket was too complex for us North Americans to understand...I'd give you that...that shit makes no sense to me...but soccer?
Reply
Flag
Any game that can be played by parrots and tiny simple robots is not a worthy sport, it's just kicking a ball around a field.

Just so you know, you're on a US website focusing for the overwhelming majority on US-based shows. If you feel the need to badmouth the people of the US, consider doing it on one of those fantastic non-US sites.
Reply
Flag
Yes, but there are a lot of people from Europe here (and from elsewhere in the world). There's no need to insult them just because it's an american based site. I can understand they feel the need to defend themselves, just like you just did.
Reply
Flag
The view Tim expressed is not so much insulting as Americentric, which is not out of line for a CBS-run, US-hosted, dotcom site like this. While soccer is the sport with the most fans worldwide, that's an irrelevant stat to Americans. Tim correctly uses the fact that the #1 sport in Europe is the #5 sport in the US, and by analogy a show that's popular in Europe may continue to flop in the states. That's not insulting; it's completely valid to point out that what's important to Europe isn't necessarily important to the target demographic of this site.

The response, however, that we who call it soccer are "***s" and the sport is "to [sic] complex" for us, is indeed insulting and unwarranted.
Reply
Flag
you know what really is insulting -not on Tim's side of course, he is not responsible for that-: calling a game, played mostly by hands as "football" and invent an irrelevant name for a sport that is actually played with feet.. other than that, I agree that there was nothing insulting in what Tim said, people are way too sensitive..
Flag
*eyeroll* I'm not arguing, and I don't think Tim was. But you're missing the point. Turn the "us vs. them" flames off.

"neither of them get close to the complexity of football". This is a value judgment, not a fact, but I won't argue it because I DON'T CARE. Neither do most Americans.

"renamed football to 'soccer'" This one IS a fact, and I STILL DON'T CARE. Neither do most Americans.

Tim didn't imply that 'soccer' is lesser. He implied that it's less important...to Americans. To the largest group of consumers for CBS (who runs this site), ABC (who aired Pan Am), and Amazon (which is considering picking it up). Americans may be wrong in this collective opinion, but CBS, ABC, and Amazon won't care, 'cause they're looking at profitability, not correcting the ethnocentrism of their customers. And all those companies count dollars, not euros. That's not insulting, it's a fact.
Flag
You're right for the most part.

The part where you're wrong is that Tim clearly wanted to make the reader feel as if 'soccer' was a lesser sport than american ones.

The funny thing is, I know how both american football and baseball work and are played, and let me tell you, neither of them get close to the complexity of football.

Just because I'm at it, I'm also going to add that I find it silly that you renamed football to 'soccer' and keep yours as football, when you consider that very little of american football is actually played with feet. Just saying.

I could make a pun about jealousy because your US soccer team isn't good enough to qualify for competition, but it is so mean when it's true ;)

Question for real though, for the football-fans: it isn't just a sport in the US right? I only know that they play soccer in almost every part of the country, but in what countries do they play football? Many?
Reply
Flag
Without fanning the flames, I'll just point out that most Americans truly aren't jealous about nationalistic soccer talent; we just don't care. That's not a slap, but the fan base just isn't there and we have other interests.

And Victoria, I think Anouk was asking about American football, not football/soccer.

Actually football or soccer is played in every European country and in every American country...also many African countries and some Asians...so yes, it is played in many countries...in fact I think in one of the most played sports in the world
Reply

I know I accidentally wrote down country instead of world, but I was indeed asking about American football. I am from the Netherlands, so I know very well they play soccer everywhere. Don't mind though, just wanted to clear it up.

These attempts at saving shows are always a little sad. Not that I don't appreciate the effort to save a good show, but there is no chance that it'll be the same after the resurrection. If my dead grandfather became a zombie I could of course watch him move around, but he would not look the same as before, and the stink would probably be pretty bad.

If Pan Am is brought back, how many of the original actors would come back when they have already committed to other projects? And those who do continue with the show will look pretty pathetic when all the others have moved on with their careers. When a show dies, it's spirit dies with it. Bringing it back makes it feel like an empty shell, a bland imitation of what it was, even if the production values would be the same as before.

Guys, chill. It was just a joke from Tim.

Although, you have to admit, it was a joke with "Epic Fail" all over it. Bushing Europe for soccer (actually it is called FOOTBALL, since...you know, it is played with feet, as opposed to othe **ahem** football-titled sports **ahem** where feet are used only for running)

Football is No1 sport in the whole world as opposed to baseball, american football and the rest american sports.

It's like an Englishman making fun of USA in basketball just because they like cricket more than basketball

Football holds a "World Cup" where 208 different countries can compete from the start of the competition to win it.

Baseball's grandly named "World Series" features teams from all of 2 different countries...
Reply
Flag
I always dislike that dumb argument. Baseball has had a "World Series" for over 109 years, a time long before any other country in the world even had a professional Baseball team. That term was used in the letter from the Pittsburg Pirates, who had the best record in the National League, challenging the Boston Americans, the best record in the American League, to a "World's Championship Series" back in 1903. Its not like something we just came up with last year to act like we're the only ones who matter.

I liked Pan Am, so I'll be glad if someone saves it from cancellation. Although, if it's only available via download on Amazon, I may not be able to watch the series for a while. My finances are in the red, right now, so I have no way to purchase any downloads. If it becomes available on DVD, though, I may be able to rent the discs, at some point. If the renewal doesn't happen, that's okay. At least the show had a whole season(?) on air. That's more than a lot of shows get these days.

pan am was awful. i have certainly never heard any enthusiastic talk about it in germany and they give that rose thing to just about anyone. and "soccer" as you people call it is named football all over the world where we like to call that sport you guys like "american football" because no one else cares about it since it's basically a huge game of chess between the coaches (it's like wizard's chess) ;)

I love reading comments when Tim talks about soccer.

Yes soccer is boring, but...baseball is the most boring sport in the whole world. So now I've hopefully put everyone off side. But guess what, just because these sports are ingrained in your culture and you've become accustomed to following them doesn't make them good. Just like with movies and tv shows, the majority of people like mediocre sports.

Well, it actually is. America is only a tiny fraction of the world which is getting less important by the minute - culturally (Ok, that was a cheap shot, I mean, what culture...), economically (Sh*t, there it is again, what economy...) and geopolitically (hey, you actually were a world power once, what happened? Oh right, china...). That's not to say that there aren't great thing to be said about the US and I like american football and baseball myself, but you really aren't that important on a global scale - deal with it.

I think you've got a very good shot of getting out of your group. You'll definitely lay a beat-down on France (remember how awful they were in the World Cup?). Then you've got to contend with Ukraine and Sweden.

My Germans are pre-tournament favorites, but we're still in the group of death. We have to play the Netherlands and Portugal.

I'm just happy we won't have to listen to those goddamned vuvuzelas. No offense to South Africa, but that was the worst World Cup EVER!
