News Briefs: BSG Creator Ronald D. Moore Has a New Show In the Works

BUSINESS TIME

... Battlestar Galactica creator Ronald D. Moore has enjoyed only middling success since his Syfy classic went off the air, with the spin-off Caprica lasting a single season and other pilots failing to make it to series. But Moore has a new project in the works with Outlander, based on a series of novels by author Diana Gabaldon. The book follows a married WWII nurse who steps back in time to 1743 Scotland, where she marries a Scottish warrior and gets embroiled in a passionate love affair. Sounds like... something that Moore shouldn't be writing? [Deadline Hollywood]

... CMT grew out its mullet a little further today with the announcement of four new series. You'd think that Redneck Intervention would be a show where people stop their friends from being too red in the neck, but it's the opposite; instead, rednecks try to get their friends to return to their redneck roots. I'm so watching this when it starts on September 15. Chainsaw Gang is a reality show about chainsaw artists, Full Metal Racket centers on the owners of a gun range in Kentucky, and Rock Raiders is about two guys who dig through flea markets for music memorabilia. [CMT via press release]

... Pushing Daisies creator Bryan Fuller is pondering bringing his canceled series to Broadway. [TV Line]

... Need more Guy Fieri in your life? GSN has acquired the off-network rights to Minute To Win It, the game show that has people attempt difficult tasks, such as be in the same room as Guy Fieri, for cash. [GSN via press release]

CASTING NEWS

... Fringe's Kevin Corrigan (who also played Professor Professorson on Community) has joined Fox's upcoming The Mob Doctor. He'll play a mobster on the show that stars Jordana Spiro as a surgeon who moonlights as... The Mob Doctor. [EW]

... NBC will air something called Jimmy Fallon's Primetime Music Special on July 25. Apparently it's a clip show of Fallon's music sketches from his late-night talk show for people who don't know how to use the internet. [NBC via press release]

IMPORTANT BABY-NAMING NEWS

... We're halfway through the year, so let's check in on the popular baby name trends! Game of Thrones fans are having sex and having babies, and there's proof because hot baby names include Arya and Theon. I am planning on naming my unborn Nymeria Cleftjaw Drogo. What a beautiful name! [Huffington Post]

The Outlander series does have an element of romance, but I seriously dislike romance novels and I LOVE this series. The Outlander world is not as large as the Game of Thrones world, but it's close (and real, and there is a good amount of actual historical events and characters thrown in for good measure). The story is very dynamic and I think appeals to a very large audience (much like Game of Thrones). However, I think putting it on a basic cable channel (FX, Lifetime, etc), would not do the series justice at all. It would HAVE to be on Showtime or HBO. I've been waiting for an announcement like this for years!

Really, "Outlander" involving time travelling stories and Scotland? Sounds lightly derivative of "Highlander" which means on TV the fans will gather the pitchforks. Anyway, the content sounds like Moore's type of storytelling to me: sappy hidden by mystery and sci-fi underpinnings, and moderately underwhelming once you're partway through.

No, it isn't like Highlander at all.... if you do like history and a well written story, buy the book and have fun!

With the success of how well the firefly reruns on the Sci Channel have been doing considering they are or where hosting a get together of the cast. If they would just find the money to buy the rights to the Battlestar and Firefly series and start making new episodes it would be win for us and win for them.

Then we would have another true science fiction based network that actually cares about science. I am looking at you SyFy.....

Why would anyone name their child after Theon Greyjoy? Next we'll find out that parents of twins are naming their children Jamie and Cersei.

I would name my son Jon Snow, so for fun i would say, Jon Snow of Winterfell!! :D

I understand Arya but Theon really?

I forgot about the baby names, lol. Too weird. I think naming your child Theon might be child abuse. That's like naming him "shit for brains" or "needy whiner"

The Outlander series? Ugh. I read that in junior high I think, but I stopped reading somewhere in high school. At first they tricked me into thinking they were sort of fantasy, but in the end they're just romance trash. If this becomes a series hopefully they tone down the romance or it will only appeal to the people that read that romance shit. So basically it could air on Lifetime or Own. Just saying.

Romance Trash... wow... it is well researched, historically accurate, both in dress, the medical knowledge and the historical figures.

But if you consider that "trash", because the protagonists of the story actually have feelings for each other, then I am sorry for you.

Rock Raiders could turn out to be a bad idea. It's going to make people think they can get $20 each for those scratched-up worthless records they have lying about. The fact is most old records aren't worth more than a dollar, if that, considering they were made in the millions.

Corrigan actually played Greendale's Drama Professor Sean Garrity who was masquerading as Professor Professorson.

Theon? Really?! THEON?! smh...

But I like Nymeria Cleftjaw Drogo, Tim. You should go for it.

Judging by past success of Ron Moore's "projects in development", this won't go anywhere close to a tv. Which is too bad, I guess. Because I trust that he could make this good, even if it doesn't sound like something I'd be really interested in watching. But maybe it will allow him to go to work on a new project?

From my memory of the graveyard of Ron Moore projects: one about magic with a number of BSG vets, a Western, "Virtuality"-which got a pilot that I liked, and that's all I remember.

Ronald D. Moore created Battlestar Galactica?

I wonder if Glen A. Larson knows this bit of information.

Have you seen the two series? That's like giving Michael J Fox credit for MTV's "Teen Wolf".

Without the original, Moore would be stuck doing Trek writing....fact.

Kevin Corrigan, also of Superbad and Grounded for Life (one of my favorite TV shows of all time).

And Pushing Daisies would be amazing as a musical! Lots of colorful sets and costumes.

Goodnight Sweetheart was a 1993 show about a modern-day dude who goes back in time to WWII and has a passionate love affair with a bartender from that time. The first Outlander novel was published in 1991. I'm not saying this show is a ripoff, but there's enough in common it feels like someone beat him to this adaptation by about 20 years.

I'm going to guess that you haven't read the Outlander novels?

Not important. The elevator pitch for the two shows is the same, except one of the time periods is changed and the genders are swapped. In Hollywood, that's practically a faithful adaptation.

So what you're saying is that they are also remaking A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court? Timeline? Terminator? Cause all movies/tv in which someone travels through time and has a romance are the same? There are alot of redundancies (how many Snow White stories did we get this yea), but I don't think this is one of them.

That was my first thought too.

Plus it had Nicholas Lyndhurst, who is cool

don't bring Pushing Daisies to Broadway where fans can't all see it, or don't want to see musicals... bring it back on DirecTV or something like all these other shows people keep throwing around :p everybody from the show is free except Swoozie Kurtz, and they could probably do something where she'd do guest stars since PD and Mike & Molly are both WB properties.
