News Briefs: CBS Is Working On an NCIS: Los Angeles Spin-off

NCIS: OVERKILL NEWS

... CBS is planning to spin off its flagship spin-off NCIS: Los Angeles, because why not? The untitled new project would be introduced within NCIS: LA before venturing off on its own, which is just like NCIS: LA was. The series would follow a group of agents who work and live together as they travel the country and solve crimes. NCIS: LA is itself a spin-off of NCIS, which is a spin-off of JAG. If this new show looks a little funny, it's because of inbreeding. [Deadline Hollywood]

BUSINESS TIME

... Spartacus: War of the Damned, the final season of Starz's Spartacus series, will debut on January 25 at 9pm. After it's gone, you'll just have to go about watching porn and old gladiator movies side-by-side on different monitors to get your fix. [Starz via press release]

... Starz has landed the rights to Sony Pictures TV's adaptation of the Outlander novels, currently being written by Battlestar Galactica creator Ronald D. Moore. The project, which was announced in July, follows a WWII combat nurse who is zapped back to 1743 Scotland, where she's torn between romancing a Scottish warrior and staying true to her husband who is alive almost 200 years in the future. Hey lady, you can't get it on with someone in the future, take the dude in the present! [Deadline Hollywood]

... Micro-trend alert: comedies about growing up! NBC has bought Grow the F**k Up, about a 36-year-old woman who dates a 20-year-old guy. And CBS has bought How to Grow Up, about a 30-year-old lawyer who discovers a box of videotaped advice from his 10-year-old self about how not to be a boring adult. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Martha Stewart is producing a Fox comedy about a party girl who changes her life by following the teachings of Martha Stewart. It's based on the book Tao of Martha, which is due to be published next fall. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Hey you, yeah you, the one Made in Jersey fan. CBS has scheduled a few episodes of the canceled show to air on November 24 and December 1. [Deadline Hollywood]

CASTING NEWS

... ABC's upcoming comedy pilot Phys Ed. has added to its cast. Samm Levine (Freaks and Geeks) will play a chemistry teacher on the show about a jock who returns to his high school to teach P.E. Also joining the roster are Shameless's Sunkrish Bala and Grey's Anatomy's Chelsea Harris. [THR]

... Last Resort's sexy military expert Kylie (Autumn Reeser) has a brother! Mad Men actor Sam Page has joined the cast in a potentially recurring role. Look for him in the December 6 episode. [TV Line]

... Law & Order: Special Victims Unit will welcome Patricia Arquette in an upcoming episode. The Medium star will play a call girl (yeahhhhhhh!) later this month. [TV Line]

... NBC's graveyard-shift medical drama After Hours is assembling quite the diverse cast. First it booked Freddy Rodriguez in the lead role; now Lost's Ken Leung and Alcatraz's Jeananne Goossen have signed on. They'll both play doctors, obviously. [Deadline Hollywood]

I am still waiting for CSI: New Orleans. It was supposed to be a spin off a few years ago.

I thought CBS already had an NCIS:LA spin-off: Hawaii 5-0 :)

Hawaii 5-0 is a total different show. They did a cross-over with NCIS: LA, though.

Hahaha. NCIS: Roadtrip! xD

I am so excited for the Outlander series! Don't mess it up Starz!

(oh, and an NCIS:LA spin-off is not a good idea. Enough already!)

NCIS LA is terrible, that's why not. It has none of the charm of NCIS, and it's not even half as smart, it's just another action-oriented procedural and it's rather shallow at that. It doesn't sound like they're really doing a spinoff though, just using NCIS LA to launch a fairly unrelated new show. All this based on JAG which was originally from NBC, I bet they're kicking themselves for letting it go.

Chances of "Grow the F**k Up" keeping that title? Zero. Also, advice from one's 10-year-old self is guaranteed to be thoughtless and have little understanding of the nuances of being an adult.

You either end it while being a very good tv show, or cancel it after a lot of mediocre seasons.

Im gonna miss Spartacus!!!

Whoa, is that CBS show about growing up based on the popular Youtube video? Would that be a first?

That's what I was thinking too, the show desriptioin reminded me of thaf

I am still waiting for CBS to bring something like The Unit back. After the past two huge years for Navy SEALs. Three movies about them untold number of books. Why, unless NCIS LA is spinning off into a show about the SEALs that would be cool. They have a SEAL case and then those SEALs have their own show. Someone get on that.

I've remained bitter about CBS canceling The Unit since the moment I heard the news. I never understood why they couldn't give the show one final season to wrap things up. But by all means, cancel unique shows like The Unit but have 3 CSI's (yes, I know Miami was canceled) and 2 NCIS' (I like both, but still).

YAY More Made in Jersey... Thanks for letting me know the DVR will be set!

Yeh, good luck NBC. After the sh*t storm that followed the title "s**t my dad says" and parent groups complaining about "Don't trust the b---- in Apartment 23"

Do you REALLY think hiding an F-bomb in a title is gonna work?

I love NCIS. Maybe its because of its characters. I also don't know why, but I can't stand NCIS LA. Maybe its because of Hetty. I find her annoying.

A spin off of a spin off lame but they made it work with CSI so it'll be profitable for them.
Reply

Technically it's a spin off of a spin off of a spin off .....If that works (which it probably will) they'll have both CSI and L&O beat.

I bet the NBC dude who got rid of JAG after its first season is dying inside a little bit more after this announcement. :)

Yea between that and whomever was the moron that cancelled Southland are kicking themselves. NCIS for some reason is still a ratings juggernaut. And Southland is the best cop show pretty much in the history of TV. (Maybe second to The Shield)

If CBS really wants to think spin off, do one of Person of Interest that follows a reese type figure in another city. I'm just saying, how cool would it be if finch has a network of superheroes all over the country? I see a real life justice league people. :)

( I post in half hope and half jest.) reply with that in mind.

Nah, If they would do that it would probably be Zoe as the Fixer. It would be liked Scandal but good.

Spin-tastic idea.....I love PoI. And do find it funny that the " Machine" only spits out numbers from one city.

Don't forget also to do a Hawaii Five-O amazing spin of in anoter island or whatever ...

These show's are worst than a Mexican Telenovela , or a Brazilian one

...what do you mean, "you people?"
Reply

"You people" meaning the Studio or TV or Producers ...
something like that ...

Gosh, Tim, some days you make USA Today TV critic Robert Bianco look like a ray of sunshine.

Love the JAG/NCIS franchise but another one? It'll only work with the right cast....but someone I don't think it'll work. I'll still watch though

Actually, you don't have to watch "porn and old gladiator movies side-by-side", because they have made a big budget porn parody of Spartacus.

So...I guess this was the only remark I had about these news briefs. (When you have the ability to focus on the relevant...)

The preferred term is "erotic reimagining," I believe.

Yo dawg, I heard you like spin-offs... (sorry, someone had to do it)

Who all is still alive from Blood and Sand? I quit watching a couple episodes into Vengeance. Gods of the Arena was great but without John Hannah, Lesley-Ann Brandt and with the new scrawny, not brilliant actor Spartacus, I just didn't think it was worth continuing. Oh and actually the fight scenes seemed sub-par compared to the prior "seasons" at least in the episodes I saw.

Vengeance wasn't as good as Blood and Sand, or Gods of the Arena, but it's still one of the top 5 shows on TV.

I too had a hard time accepting *two* different actors. I can understand that they had to replace the one that died, but what the hell happened to the other one?

You missed out big time then... I mean, only if you enjoy lots of blood and guts, that is :-)

Samm Levine? Well, hot dang. I've missed him since Freaks and Geeks.
