News Briefs: Colin Farrell and Taylor Kitsch Are Reportedly in Talks for True Detective Season 2

... One day after HBO's True Detective earned several Emmy nominations, including nods for both Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, multiple media outlets are reporting that Irish actor Colin Farrell is in talks to star in Season 2. HBO executives weren't willing to spill any casting information yesterday during their panel at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, but they did say the cast would probably include some familiar faces. You will, of course, recognize Farrell from his critically acclaimed work in Daredevil, Miami Vice, and his sex tape.

Meanwhile, The Wrap is reporting that Friday Night Lights star Taylor Kitsch is in talks for another role. [THRThe Wrap]

BUSINESS TIME

... MTV has renewed its hit reality series Catfish for Season 4, which should at the very least make our own Cory Barker very happy. The network also announced a handful of premiere dates for returning show: Awkward. is back for Season 4B on September 23 at 10pm, Faking It is back for Season 2 on September 23 at 10:30pm, and Are You The One? is back for Season 2 on September 29 at 10pm). New series Happyland, a teen dramedy exploring the underbelly of a popular theme park, will debut Tuesday, September 30 at 11pm. [MTV via press release]

... MTV also announced a straight-to-series, 10-episode order for Shannara, a new drama based on the series of books by Terry Brooks. The first season will be based on The Elfstones of Shannara, the second title in the series. Smallville producers Al Gough and Miles Millar are on board to write and produce. [MTV via press release]

... Starz is making the premiere of its new drama Outlander available online one week before it officially premieres on August 9. Starting August 2, fans will be able to check it out on Starz.com, the Starz Play app, YouTube, Facebook, and more. The premium cable network is also splitting the first season in two like it's AMC or something; the first eight episodes will run uninterrupted through September 27, with the second half of the season debuting in early 2015. [Starz via press release]

... Starz has also announced premiere dates for two new series, The Chair and Survivor's RemorseThe Chair is a 10-part documentary from Chris Moore (Project Greenlight) that follows two first-time directors who are going through the process of bringing their debut feature to the big screen; it'll debut Saturday, September 6 at 11pm when everyone's either out or asleep. Survivor's Remorse, a half-hour comedy from executive producers LeBron James (seriously), Mike O'Malley, Maverick Carter, and Tom Werner, follows a young man who's made it big playing basketball (and yes, the original script had the show set in Cleveland). Look for its debut on on Saturday, October 4 at 9pm. [Starz via press release]

... Josh Charles is returning to The Good Wife... as a director. The actor, who was nominated for an Emmy for his performance in Season 5, will direct his fourth episode of the series in Season 6. Charles previously helmed "The Art of War," "The Next Month," and "Tying the Knot." [TV Line]

CASTING NEWS

... Luke Mitchell has a new job and it's not on The CW (that sound you hear is me crying buckets for The Flash). The former star of The Tomorrow People has joined the cast of ABC's Members Only, previously known as The Club. Described as an upstairs/downstairs soap opera set at a country club, Mitchell will play new employee Jesse, who hails from the wrong side of town. [THR]

... Gabrielle Walsh has joined the cast of The Vampire Diaries. She'll first appear in the Season 6 premiere as Sarah, a newcomer to Mystic Falls who has a shady agenda. A shady agenda? I am SHOCKED. [Deadline

... Hung's Thomas Jane has joined the cast of Syfy's The Expanse, the network's upcoming adaptation of the Leviathan Wakes book series from James S. A. Corey (a.k.a. collaborators Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, who write under that pen name). It's a space opera set 200 years in the future, and it centers on a detective and a rogue ship's captain as they race across the solar system in search of a missing young woman... with the potential to expose "the greatest conspiracy in human history." [THR]

I would love to see Colin Farrell in True Detectives. His better but maybe unknown movies, 'In Bruges', 'Cassandra's Dream', 'Dead Man Down' and 'London Boulevard' show a different side to Farrell's acting ability. Much different than his previous 'Miami Vice', 'Alexander' & 'Fright Night' was just boring altogether (not because of him). 'Seven Psychopaths' he's also very good in but the movie itself took a little too much comedy out of the dark comedy genre.

Outlander sounds like something that should be aired opposite big sports nights for the ladies to argue over with their partners, as to who gets to TIVO what and still have sex later.
Unless TD is going to return as a pretty boy buddy road movie with minor detection themes and a Thelma or Louise strong female brass ovaries character, then some recasting needs to take place. In any case, if a woman is going to be cast you can bet that she'll be a strong blah, blah, blah. Whenever something new comes out now that gets plaudits, it's got to have a significant Y in the cast or face criticism. I'm all for decent roles for women but I, for one, am sick and tired of those roles meaning they get to deride the male actors throughout and destroy any real chance of synergy.
Members Only sounds like that it's going to packed with them. Pass.
The Expanse may as well add Summer Glau and be done with it claiming any sense of the new - I wonder if the missing girl is called Miranda, just for kicks.

Colin Farrell is a weak actor and has black marks in my book for taking a major dump on two hallowed classics, Fright Night and Total Recall. He has the on-screen presence of scenery and the acting range of Paris Hilton. Why does he ever get screen roles. The only role he didn't suck at was in Minority report, where he was a supporting actor and got shot. Is it wrong to cheer?

True Detective can do much better than Colin Farell, who actually stunk in both Daredevil and Miami Vice. He is a very minor second rate actor at best. As for whatever his name, someone I have never even heard of, are you fucking kidding me? Finally, on the subject, where did the idea to have at least one female actress in the leading role? Please do not make me puke over this.
I think Starz is smart in getting us to have sneek at Outlander, which actually seems to stand a chance, especially after seeing what Extant and The Leftovers look like.

Farrell has had some decent roles and Kitsch impressed me with his portrayal of Lt. Michael Murphy in Lone Survivor (way better than Marky Mark). But let us not forget, up until recently Matthew McConaughey was kind of a bland actor until the last few roles.

But let us not forget that the reveal of the big bad wasn't that great or big or really that bad and the writers left a lot of plot holes and a conspiracy unsolved.

MTV has been doing well recently. Faking it was awesome and the new series Finding Carter deserve some praise too. I am glad Catfish got renewed. Just when I thought they are running out of ideas, they manage to surprise me with some fresh ideas for the current season three.

Starz is doing well too. Power is a great show and I will give Outlander a chance.

Glad to hear Luke Mitchell is getting a gig on ABC.

Say what you will about MTV not being a music channel anymore, but they've been kicking out some pretty solid scripted shows as of late (and although most would disagree, I'll still count Death Valley and The Inbetweeners in that list) Its almost like they're finally realizing how to evolve and remain relevant!

I still remember watching music videos on MTV in the 80s when I was a kid. I never imagine them to have their own scripted series.

These days the kids have youtube so they have to evolve.

Unfortunately, it did get cancelled, and most of the stars from it seem to have disappeared into relative obscurity (except Caity Lotz, who will forever be infinitely popular in MANY of my personal fantasies, and you know, appearances on Arrow and Mad Men don't hurt either)

I'd love to see Colin Farrell in TD2. His attempts in more blockbuster or mainstream movies usually end poorly, but I like movies like Seven Psychopaths, London Boulevard, and In Bruges and his roles in them. So like with most actors, I think he could do great with great writing, which I expect from TD2.

Well at least you saw the best 2 episodes. Each episode got worse and the last one was terrible. Acting was fantastic but the actual story degenerated badly over the series - thank goodness it was short! IMO a lot of people have confused great acting with making a great show - they're not the same thing.

Sorta like most anime fans confusing a good premise with a good story I suppose. While I'll agree with you that much of the acting and production more than outshone the storytelling, I will strongly disagree that the story got worse as the series went on, or that the ending was terrible. And while great acting is not all a great show is composed of, great acting, great sets, great locations, great directing, great dialogue, great sound editing, great marketing, and great wardrobe and makeup absolutely make a great show even if you want to argue the writing wasn't great.

Alexander had plenty of things going for it (Rosario Dawson got nekkid! That's reason enough to OWN that movie!) but yeah, was hardly his best performance. I thought he was one of the few things that saved the Fright Night remake, and his turn opposite Edward Norton in Pride and Glory was pretty nice. And what crazed sociopaths didn't love him in Seven Psychopaths???

"You will, of course, recognize Farrell from his critically acclaimed work in Daredevil, Miami Vice, and his sex tape."

Lol Kaitlin, you cracked me up. As soon as I saw Farrell name I thought NO WAY and that sentence made me feel a little better. I just hope True Detective doesn't become one of those shows that only had a good first season because of two fantastic actors. I mean can anyone imagine Farrell playing a character like Cohle?? Seriously unless this seasons a really bad comedy, I can't see how adding Farrell to the roster will help. And yes, I've seen a lot of movies he's done. Even the better ones aren't that convincing.

I'm pretty indifferent when it comes to Colin Farrell, but I do like Taylor Kitsch so if he's in it, I'll watch.

Happyland is basically a tv adaptaion of Adventureland right? I remember hearing about that Shannara show a while back, I might check it out... even though MTV being attached is kind of weird to me, but Teen Wolf theoretically shouldn't work either but it does.

I knew it was only a matter of time before The CW put Luke Mitchell in another one of their shows, he was easily the best actor on the show..

I figured Outlander would debut early online, but it would've been funny if it had been on Pinterest like the joke I made on here when Power was released early on Twitter.

Colin Farrell has been in some great films, just not the ones Kaitlin mentioned. He was particularly great in, In Bruges and The Way Back. Him and Taylor Kitsch have had some bombs at the box office as of late, so going to TV is probably a good move on their part.

The Expanse sounds cool but I have zero faith in Syfy being able to pull off a space drama after they canceled SGU.
