News Briefs: Community's Ratings Were Left Broken-hearted on Valentine's Day

FOUR SEASONS AND A WEB SERIES MAYBE? NEWS

... After a great respectable start to its long-delayed fourth season, Community got dumped on Valentine's Day when it showed up for Episode 2. Ratings crashed 42 percent to a 1.1 in the adult demo, a series low. Obviously the "holiday" didn't help (ratings were down all across the board, but none were as steep as Community), but is the drop it a sign of something more? The saga continues next week. BUSINESS TIME

... ABC's new show Zero Hour (hee hee, this show) also had a bad night. The series debut embarrassed ABC with the network's worst in-season scripted premiere ever, grabbing a 1.3 rating in the adult demo (even Work It premiered to a 2.0 rating). You mean a conspiracy thriller about frozen Nazis and clocks and monster babies didn't click with people on Valentine's Day? [Deadline Hollywood]

... TV Land has ordered Giant Baby to series. The sitcom stars Kirstie Alley as a woman who reconnects with the son she gave up for adoption after his adoptive mother passes away. Rhea Perlman and Michael Richards also star, making TV Land the most star-studded network around for people who just woke up from 20-year comas. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Lifetime is developing a miniseries based on the life of Cleopatra, that Egyptian hussy who put a fire in the loins of so many men back in the old days. The plan is to make it a four-hour extravaganza, most likely with incredibly cheesy dialogue, terrible acting, and the worst green-screen effects since the network's last project. Absolutely I'm watching! [Deadline Hollywood]

... Good news for Cleopatra is bad news for Renee Zellweger. Lifetime has passed on her pitch for the TV pilot Cinnamon Girl, about four ladies coming of age in late-'60s Los Angeles. [THR]

CASTING NEWS

... Coach Taylor will now be Cardinal Taylor! Friday Night Lights' Kyle Chandler has grabbed the lead in the Showtime drama pilot Vatican. He'll play Cardinal Thomas Duffy, the Archbishop of New York in the thriller set against the politics of the Catholic Church. You should be very excited about this. [Deadline Hollywood]

... The B---- is back. Krysten Ritter is following her role on Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 with a role in the NBC comedy pilot Assistance. She'll play the lead, a woman caught between her "work husband" coworker, her real-life fiance, and her insane boss. <3 U Kristen will U B mine? [Deadline Hollywood]

... Torchwood's Burn Gorman (he played Owen) has joined AMC's pilot Turn. The period drama is set in 1778 and follows a small group of spies known as the Culper Ring who helped sway the tide in the War of Independence. [THR]

... iCarly's Miranda Cosgrove has joined NBC's pilot Girlfriend in a Coma. The comedy stars Christina Ricci as a woman who wakes up from a coma to find she has a 17-year-old daughter. I'm really hoping that she was pregnant when she went into the coma, otherwise some horny doctors have a lot of explaining to do. Cosgrove will play Ricci's daughter, which I suppose works for me. [Deadline Hollywood]

... The versatile CCH Pounder (The Shield) has hopped on board CBS's pilot The Advocates. The legal drama follows a pair of lawyers fighting for the little guys, and Pounder will play their boss. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Desperate Housewives vet Felicity Huffman has grabbed the badass lead in Fox's pilot Boomerang. She'll play the matriarch of a family of trained assassins who work for the U.S. government. [EW]

CCH Pounder doing pilots is bad news for Warehouse13

Not really she only has a very small part in it, I highly doubt the W13 gig pays her bills ;)

Started to watch Zero Hour and decided that it had definite possibilities.

But one could already see the network cancelling the series after 3-4 airings. . .so why bother?

I like Community a lot but for some reason the first two episodes of this season fell flat with me, not sure why, just seemed a bit like they were trying too hard or something, they should go back to the school and back to doing what they do best IMO.

Vatican ... eh, I don't know but I'll check it out for Kyle Chandler.
Assistance - I'll be tuning in for Krysten Ritter!

Hmm, interesting news. Not the community of course, but the casting round up. It's kind of embarrassing but I am intrigued by more than one.

Really excited about "Turn"! AMC + periodic piece equals greatness :)

This season was a gift. A gift of socks when what you wanted was a game console, but a gift nonetheless.

Well, that's what happens when you rip the soul out of a show with a devoted audience. What did NBC really think was going to happen, that keeping the actors and sets around was all they needed to make the show work as well as it had before???

Zero Hour was premiered too late into midseason, ABC waited too long and now audiences are burned out on anything like that. Also, horrible marketing as usual.

Cleopatra, really Lifetime? Gonna cast Lindsay Lohan in that, since you already had her playing an actress famous for portraying the Egyptian queen?

Krysten Ritter was hilarious as a fake executive on an episode of The Bitch in Apt 23, but that writeup sounds a tad more sitcommy than her talents should be wasted upon.

Sooooo, the mom is going to be played by a 32-year-old actress and the 17-year-old daughter is going to be played by a 20-year-old actress? And both of them are overly cloying and simple at sitcom-style acting? Gee, that sounds promising. Call me when it's cancelled.

CCH Pounder is playing a boss too much these days, Warehouse 13 at least she gets to do stuff, but she needs a better role, one that's not such a modern cliche.

NBC doesn't have a lot of appealing shows. I only watch New Normal (destined to be canceled in may), Law + Order: SVU (hanging on by a thread), Deception (destined to be canceled in may), The Biggest Loser (hanging on by a thread), Chicago Fire (up in the air), Parenthood (never gets a real season, hanging on by a thread), Smash (based on the premiere is destined to be canceled in May) and Grimm (up in the air).

I wouldn't say Grimm is up in the air at all. It's been doing quite well on Fridays where shows don't get the higher ratings they do on other nights.

NBC has a habit of getting rid of the good shows and keeping crap on.

At this point i will try to enjoy these last 11 episodes, dont really see nbc renewing it

When you did midseason shows, you said for Zero Hour, that your guess is,that it has something to do with aliens. Now you say demons. Go watch your precious Fringe.
Out of new shows and pilots I watched,Zero Hour had the best one. Even better than Arrow, because I hated, that Arrow copied Batman Begins.
Zero Hour has potential and I hope you aren't reviewing 2nd episode Tim!

Pitting Community against Big Bang Theory was a spectacularly stupid move. It might actually have been better off on Friday nights last fall...

Well the first Community ep of season 4 wasn't that great, so my enthusiasm for the season went down esp considering they dumped the creator/showrunner :(

CCH Pounder news is what got me excited the most!
Love Kyle Chandler too, but a religious show like that? Not too sure about that...

As long as CCH Pounder sticks with Warehouse 13 in her spare time I am happy :)

Community's numbers always seem to be up after its comng bavck from a break and then drops the second episode.. Could be built up anticipation, since lets face it Community's schedule has a lot of delays. Plus there were prolly some who were upset over it not being just as good as it used to be.

I thought Zero Hour would debut a bit higher, and then fall rapidly after 1-3 episodes. OK, I'm predicting 0.7 for episode 5, if it's still on the air. (It probably will be, because if they had anything to replace it with, they would never have aired this).

I have a feeling that the people watching tv on valentines day were not in the mood to watch a halloween themed episode. I think we have to wait untill next week to see if Community's numbers are truely down.
@torque_smacky: Ha thats so true.

On the contrary, anyone sitting at home watching TV on valentine's day probably didn't want to be reminded that they are sitting at home watching TV on VALENTINE's DAY. Pretending it is Halloween is a much better plan. Smart plan, unfortunately it backfired. :(

Yea that is going from bad to worse. Go to CBS since they keep even the most inane crap comedies.

How's Lohan gonna feel when Lifetime decides she won't star in Cleopatra?

Why is Showtime trying to corner the market on shows about cardinals? (and yes I will totes watch Vatican)

Since Ritter didn't nail it as the B---- (imho sfo) I wonder if she'll improve or worsen in a new NBC 'broad' comedy with a terrible concept.

Turn sounds great but it'll depend on the acting chops of its cast. Can Torchwooders actually act? It seems impossible but I guess stranger things have happened.

The thing is, THEY don't want us to watch Zero Hour, to learn its message, so THEY are faking this low-audience ratings index. And you know who THEY are. You know who I'm talking about. OK, I've said too much already...

I don't mean to stereotype, but if every show's ratings were down due to people getting out with their SOs and doing Valentine's Day things, you would think the geekiest show would do the best....?

Community still has the problem of being scheduled opposite Big Bang Theory... which draws heavily on the same pool of people who would otherwise watch Community, *AND* BBT's network actually SUPPORTS their shows.
