News Briefs: Fox Buys J.J. Abrams' Robot Cop Sci-Fi Pilot

BUSINESS TIME

... J.J. Abrams is teaming up with Fringe showrunner J.H. Wyman and Fox for a new pilot about a robo-policeman. The untitled sci-fi drama is set in near-future Los Angeles where regular flesh-and-blood cops are partnered with lifelike android cops that are indistinguishable from their human counterparts in every way except they aren't total dicks. [EW]

... Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter is changing direction with a new project at FX. He's sold a comedy to the network called Diva. Clown. Killer, which might star his wife Katey Sagal as the titular Diva, a washed up '80s rock star. She has a son who works as a party clown, and there's an assassin in there somewhere, too. I'm guessing this is the project Sutter was referring to when he called me a "douche" in response to a piece I wrote on FX cutting back on taking risks. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Fox has purchased the comedy Bastards from writer Jason Micallef (who penned the upcoming filmButter). The series is about a "family who has never met." You all should get really excited about this project because it's going to knock your frickin' faces off. And also go see Butter when it's in theaters in early October because it's hilarious! (How was that, Jason?) [Deadline Hollywood]

... American Pickers creator and star Mike Wolfe has sold a scripted comedy to CBS. The project is a workplace comedy set at an antiques and collectibles sho-zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz... [Deadline Hollywood]

... Cee Lo Green will be the centerpiece of a new family sitcom in development at NBC. The Voice mentor will star in a show loosely based on his life (aren't they all?) about a man who juggles his pop-star life with his domestic life. Oh man! Where do they come up with these? [Deadline Hollywood]

CASTING NEWS

... Tina Fey is guest-voicing an upcoming episode of The Simpsons. The 30 Rock star will play a substitute teacher who doesn't take kindly to Lisa for some mysterious reason. I'm guessing it's because she's a yellow, four-fingered freak with a head shaped like a caricature of the sun. [EW]

... Ryan Murphy has announced that Frances Conroy is returning to American Horror Story for Season 2 (called American Horror Story: Asylum). She played a maid in Season 1, and will play "the ultimate angel" in Season 2. [Ryan Murphy's Twitter]

... Christina Ricci will guest-star on The Good Wife, joining a slew of guest actors already booked for Season 4. Ricci, last seen in ABC's Pan Am, will play a controversial female comedian who needs Alicia's help. [EW]

... Are you ready for a Raver-lution? Haha, that's some The Beatles humor for ya. Grey's Anatomy vet Kim Raver is joining the cast of Revolution in a recurring role as [SUPER TOP SECRET]. If the show makes it that far. [TV Line]

Robocop? The old dish again? Could we get something new instead? I guess the questions is asked too late? Fortunately, my remote control has a switch-off button.

J.J. Abrams project is more like I, Robot than Robocop , minus Will Smith ..

i suggest Idris Elba or someone like him , with a muscles and fearless look for the main character ( the Human Cop ) .. cant wait to see the pilot episode

Surely that can't have been the real Kurt what's-his-name, though? Squabbling on a tv site like a disgruntled fanboy, whose favourite show someone's just insulted? He can't be that dumb!

That's a repost from the twitter message where he said exactly that, plus an uncensored C-word at the end.

Wow! The egos on those people (not to mention the minuscule fuses)! It's worse than kindergarten, at least kids have the excuse of not knowing that the world doesn't revolve around them...In the words of Del Boy - what a plonker!

c word ? oh mai god .. did he say cow ?

thank you so much

I watched the pilot of Revolution here on the site, and I gotta tell ya ... I loved it! Raver will probably end up being the President, tricked into setting off the whatever-it-was that caused all of the Earth's power to disappear. Maybe they'll do her in with a scalpel - which would be cosmic justice, in my book!

Anyway, the pilot looked better than 90% of the crap they usually come out with in the fall, and I'm definitely gonna watch it!

Robocop version 2.0 the film out 2013 (i think), not a bad time for Mr Abrams to be releasing a TV version.

Didn't Kurt Sutter recently sign a 3 year deal with FX??? Does that mean we get the already green lit seasons 5 and 6 of SOA then this comedy in the 3rd year? Or more preferably seasons 5 6 and 7.

Hmm, Robo-popo might be pretty interesting. Diva Clown Killer and the Mike Wolfe/CBS comedy actually sound interesting, to me, too. (Hey, no judging.)

Pretty soon every single show on TV is going to be a J.J. Abrams show.

Now as for Robo-popo, will it be more Mann & Machine or Total Recall 2070? It won't be Robocop, I can assure you. JJ Abrams' hand involved means it'll be Mann & Machine I think. Total Recall 2070 may have been a cheap Canadian mess, but it was the only TV show based on a Philip K. Dick concept (2 actually since the show is really Blade Runner in disguise).

American Pickers has a sitcom offshoot? You called it, zzz all the way.

Cee Lo isn't a sitcom already? I thought he was just a really good promotional character the network had set up, like how Sasha Baron Cohen promotes all his films.

Christina Ricci on The Good Wife? Interesting. She's playing a stand-up? I'm guessing a deadpan one.

"Robo-popo." LOL *adds this to her lexicon*

Tim, of course he called you a douche - your comments avatar is MXC's Guy Le Douche, and he called you "Tim L'Douche", how can you not see that connection??? Why he called you the C word though... well, that'd be a little tougher to explain. I do think FX can buy all the pilots it wants, but only the ones it takes to series are worth arguing, and you made a compelling (if perhaps not entirely prescient) argument which won't really be fully felt until the '13-'14 season gets planned after that cash-flush that was the 90-episode Anger Management commitment is fully felt.

So Abrams wants to remake Mann and Machine?

The next project of JJ Abrams will be a series about some extraterrestrial housewives that are indistinguishable from their human counterparts in every way.

We can put together a half-baked idea and sell it to FX? Count me in!

Dear JJ Abrams,

Stop doing shit. It was cute when you started, now you're saturating a thirsty market with countless terrible projects. Try this formula: Focus on one idea. Make it great. Do it.

Maybe Hollywood should ban J.J. Abrams from making any more shows.
Reply

Don't worry it's going to be on Fox and their specialty is cancelling shows within the first season.

Wait Sutter called you a douche??? must find that article now.

Anybody reminded of "Blade Runner?" when they hear about this new show?

My first thought was caves of steel by Isaac Asimov. First book in the robot series.

That was my first thought exactly, it read like the blurb on the back cover.

That's because it's an exact copy (*cough cough* ripoff) of the 1999 Canadian TV series "Total Recall 2070" (aired in the US on Showtime), which was based on two Phillip K. Dick works: the short story that inspired the movie "Total Recall" and the novel that influenced "Blade Runner" ("We Can Remember It for You Wholesale" and "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep", respectively). Decent show. It's available on Hulu for free.

Tina Fey as Lisa's teacher? Is The Simpsons doing a Mean Girls episode?

"The untitled sci-fi drama is set in near-future Los Angeles where regular flesh-and-blood cops are partnered with lifelike android cops that are indistinguishable from their human counterparts in every way except they aren't total dicks." - Does it show how old I am that I thought of R. Daneel Olivaw when I read that description? ;)
Reply
Flag
just commented that few comments up. before reading this I must be as old as RDO as he was in prelude to the foundation.
Reply
Flag
Haha. I just finished re reading Asimov's robot series. They really need to come out with a movie or tv show based on on Daneel and Elijah Baley
Reply
Flag
It might make it as an animated show, but Asimov is too cerebral for the mainstream. (I Robot was a success, but that was due to Will Smith, not Asimov.)
Reply

funny In I robot R. Daneel Olivaw is replaced by V.I.K.I. and made stupid.

So, Alien Nation without the liver spots.
