CASTING NEWS

... McGarrett has a mom! Hawaii Five-0 has cast Emmy-winner Christine Lahti as Doris McGarrett, the lady who spawned Steve McGarrett (Alex O'Loughlin) from her loins. She'll recur on the CBS series. Lahti won an Emmy for her work on Chicago Hope in 1998. [EW]

... Lily Taylor (Six Feet Under) is headed to Netflix's original series Hemlock Grove. She'll play a gypsy mother in the murder mystery from horror dude Eli Roth. Like anyone uses Netflix's online streaming service to do anything but watch Poison Ivy 3. [TV Line]

... With so many people quitting The Office, NBC knows it has to staff up. Currently in talks to join the fading comedy as a regular is Clark Duke, Michael Cera's buddy who starred in Hot Tub Time Machine, Greek, and the great web series Clark and Michael. This news changes The Office's status from "something I definitely will never watch again" to "something I will almost certainly never watch again." [TV Line]

... Former Avengers (the old '60s one, not the Joss Whedon one) actress Diana Rigg will appear in an upcoming episode of Doctor Who alongside her daughter Rachael Stirling. No details on the part except that the mother and daughter combo will be playing a mother and daughter combo. We'll see if it's believable. [Mirror UK]

BUSINESS TIME

... HBO's The Newsroom stunk it up in its second week after a decent debut. Sunday's episode recorded 1.7 million viewers, down from 2.1 million the week before. For you percentophiles, that's almost a 20-percent drop. More troubling was the 30-percent drop among viewers under 50. This is obviously because old people also don't know how to use email and like to be talked to and boy do they talk to you in The Newsroom. [Vulture]

... FX has acquired the off-network rights to CBS's sitcom Mike & Molly, where it will join Two and a Half Men and open the door for Billy Gardell to get his own sitcom about an overweight man who falls for an overweight woman but IT WILL BE DIFFERENT. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Syfy has announced its Comic-Con panels, and no, Marcel's Quantum Kitchen will not be there. New high-tech show/game Defiance will take over Room 6DE on Friday, July 13 at 6:45pm, Warehouse 13 will hold its panel bright and early at 10am on Saturday in Ballroom 20, and Alphas and Being Human will go back-to-back in that order in the Indigo Ballroom starting at 2pm. I'll be stalking Ryan Cartwright. [Syfy via press release]
