News Briefs: HBO Orders More of Vice's Guerrilla News

NEWS ABOUT NEWS NEWS

... HBO has renewed its investigative news program Vice for a second season. The series, an offshoot of the magazine, takes cameras to places where cameras normally aren't allowed, like North Korea (they were responsible for Dennis Rodman's visit to Mr. Cuckoo Dictator over there) and child-soldier camps in Africa. It's sorta gonzo journalism, but also sort of shock TV. HBO has asked for a 12-episode second season to air in 2014. [HBO via press release]

BUSINESS TIME

... Sons of Anarchy is no stranger to bouts of comical violence, but now it's going to have a dedicated space for comic-book violence. BOOM! Studios will be publishing a series of six Sons of Anarchy comics starting this summer. The comics look like they will rewind the series a bit back to when Clay was president and Jax still had long hair, and follow the daughter of an old SAMCRO member who seeks protection from the club. [Comic Book Resources]

... Worried your teenage daughter might grow up to be an upstanding citizen? Don't worry, MTV renewed Girl Code. [The Wrap]

... Oh no! The Voice had its lowest ratings ever on Tuesday! (Muahahahaha...) [Deadline Hollywood]

CASTING NEWS

... Actor Wes Bentley (the weird kid from American Beauty) has been cast in Ryan Murphy's upcoming pilot Open for HBO. The series is a provocative look at human sexuality (as all of Murphy's projects are, in some way). Bentley, who your little sister knows as the guy from The Hunger Games, will play a cocky man who thinks he knows everything about sex. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Showtime's Nurse Jackie has announced what was pretty apparent to fans throughout the fifth season: Eve Best, who plays Jackie's friend Dr. Eleanor O'Hara, will not be returning for the dramedy's sixth season. According to producers, it was Best's decision to leave, as she wanted to stay in her native U.K. The actress actually left the series before the fifth season, but taped prerecorded sequences to keep her character in the series. [TV Line]

... Cinemax's interesting-sounding pilot Quarry, about Vietnam vets who get recruited to be assassins in the early 1970s, has added to its cast. Stellan Skarsgard, father of True Blood's Alexander, Hemlock Grove's Bill, and Vikings' Gustaf, will play the series' criminal overlord who pulls the disenchanted war vets to the wrong side of the law. Just greenlight this one now, okay Cinemax? [TV Line]

... FX's untitled comedy pilot from Andrew Gurland just got a lot funnier. Jenny Slate (Kroll Show) and Brett Gelman (Go On's Mr. K) have joined the project which stars Judy Greer and Nat Faxon as a couple that agrees to an open marriage in an attempt to save their relationship. Slate and Gelman will play friends of Faxon's character. Greer, Faxon, Slate, and Gelman in the same show? This NEEDS to get made. [Deadline Hollywood]

... The Chicago Fire spinoff Chicago PD has dropped Melissa Sagemiller from its cast. Remember her in Sleeper Cell? Mama mia! [TV Line]

... You know that Smash reunion you asked for? Well, it's happening! Megan Hilty, who played Ivy in the doomed musical drama, will join the cast of NBC's new comedy Sean Saves the World, where she'll once again act alongside her Smash co-star Sean Hayes. Hilty will play Sean's best friend, replacing Lindsay Sloane. [TV Line]

... Jason Alexander is headed over to TV Land. That sounds about right. The former Seinfeld star will reunite with fellow Seinfeld star Michael Richards on Kirstie, a new comedy starring Kirstie Alley. In Kirstie, Alley plays a Broadway star who reunites with the son she gave up for adoption. Richards plays her driver, and Alexander will play her agent in a potentially recurring role. [TV Land via press release]

FUCK! Super bummed about O'hara not coming back for season 6. Though we all knew it was coming. The new blonde doctor is super annoying. :-(

I liked how you characterised Stellan Skarsgard as father of hunk1, hunk2 and hunk3 while he is the actor with the long and established career... I think he'd like it too, he's a funny guy... I liked him in Pirates of the Caribbean...

When I read "father of True Blood's Alexander", I was thinking that this is ridiculous. Stellan is a better actor and is (I hope) still far more famous. But since he has THREE sons in significant roles in American shows, it would have been weird to not mention that in some way.

Good news about 'Vice' - very interesting program to make you feel awful.

Brett Gelman, Jenny Slate added to Judy Greer/Nat Faxon pilot - sounding better and better. I love Brett Gelman if only for 'Eagleheart'.

'Masters of Sex' looks better and sounds like a much better idea than 'Open'. When is the world going to realize Ryan Murphy is quite overrated? His shows start well than almost immediately start digging themselves graves from which they never emerge because his show crews have no idea how to sustain quality. He has yet to run a show that has been good from beginning to end. Now he changes the story every year on "American Horror Story" to keep it from happnening on that show so maybe he's learning. Oh wait, that isn't a show, its a mini-series - my bad. Love that HBO is scurrying to catch up with Showtime for once. Mark my words, this is going to be 'Showtime''s year.

Gee, NBC pinned all their hopes on The Voice next season and now it's going to tank, who could have guessed that repetitive singing shows get stale quickly and doubly so when you constantly hammer them? Oh, everybody? Ok. Enjoy being below Univision again next season, NBC.

Greer, Slate, Faxon, and Gelman sounds like the most shrill, obnoxious, over-the-top sitcom possible. I hope they have excellent directors and writers, most of those folks are talented but feed off going off the rails acting, especially when fueled by others.

TV Land's sitcoms are starting to feel too pathetic now, like a sitcom actors' retirement home when they can't get work elsewhere. "America loves these guys, but everything else we put them in ends up tanking, so let's just make a generic '90s-style sitcom with them in it and have low expectations about the results!" By the way, TV Land's "The Exes" is having a preview episode for its next season this weekend, my DVR tells me.

Swedish actors as Vietnam vets? Surely all the Swedes did was watch their famous chef during this period - later popularized by The Muppets. Swedish actors are becoming the equivalent of the old blacking up days, except violence is now the role for these.
This being irony in the truest sense, considering Swedes are one of the kindest peoples on the planet these days. Quick fact; they average a 10% gifting of wealth/income yearly to charity.

Alexander has already played an American soldier in Generation Kill. But he was at least able to speak with a good enough American accent. I don't see Stellan doing that.

Eh isn't Stockholm still smoldering from the week long riots?

Sounds pretty standard world citizen-ish to me. :)

Like I said, irony rules with Swedes:p

"...about Vietnam vets who get recruited to be assassins in the early 1970s..."

That sort of sounds like a darker version of The A-Team tv series. (Yes, I'm weird.)

I had a friend some Murphy's works up pretty well. Everyone in Murphy's shows is someone he's been, wanted to be, or hated. His work is masturbatory in the purest definition of the word.

Only Americans can make a show on open marriage and think it would be entertaining. The rest of us in the world just LOCAO (laugh our collective asses off, keep up with the jingo, will you) at American Puritanism. I mean NOBODY in the world makes such a big deal from receiving a hug as americans do, and that's the mild thing. Then they go and talk sexual nonesense just so people will not see the puritan in them.So that's one series that might just work, but not for the reasons the creators think.
I am a HUMUNGEOUS FAN of Michael A. Collins, especially his Eliot Ness novels, which you would love reading. All his pseudo-historical murder reconstruction novels are great as well. I am definitely looking forward to watching Quarry. It can be a little better than a James Elroy novel, but I'll let you be judge of that (note to myself: as if I had any choice, sigh).

You sound like you need to take that extra humung(E)ous E and feel the love, or, HIOB (hug it out, bitch - deciphered spy code)!
Read books, are you mad? This is 2013 and only Al Qaeda do something so tasteless and medieval. Hence the Murphy show'll probably work as it doesn't require mouthing words in the HBO T&A hands-free electronic era;)

You got the code right on, but he still has the Law to worry about;so I'll just garb me a Red and settle down to watch the result.
I know you mean to be funny on reading, but that's just one subject I just can't joke about, sorry. But I do appreciate the effort (really).

Max Allan Collins' specialty is taking real crime cases and extrapolate them as novels. His facts are usually well researched
Among the Eliot Ness series:
1.Butcher's Dozen.
2.Death By numbers.
Nathan Heller series:
1.Angel in Black. (his rendition of the Black Dahlia case, really excellent)
2.Stolen Away (the baby Lindhberg case).
3.Target Lancer (his latest about an atempt at JFK's life weeks before Dallas)

He also has a Dick tracy series which is not so bad and he is of course largely known for his graphic novel "Road to Perdition", the movie with Tom Hanks.
Honestly, you will enjoy his prose.

What?? As much as I love Sloane, I adore Hilty. Upgrade. Also, "Girl Code" is the best! I'm in love with Carly...and Chris...and they're dating...it's a weird sitch. But yea, my teenage bro watches it for tips.

When I first heard about Girl Code I thought it was going to be so STUPID. Then I watched it after Awkward a couple of weeks ago! I ended up downloading and watching all 15 episodes in one night! I found out about Carly and Chris a couple of days ago and it blew my mind!

Same thing happened to me! I hated Guy Code so I was like, whatevs. And then I watched a rando episode and ended up binging the entire series in three days, lol.

I downloaded Guy Code when I finished Girl Code and I've only watched the first episode but I definitely don't like it as much. Probably because I relate more to the humor on Girl Code, but also it's like the graphics look older and crappier. Maybe it has a shitty budget because it's on MTV2.

I really like Vice most of the time, though a few of their correspondents are really not that good at being engaging or entertaining, and at times even being able to comment in a deep reflective way on some of the extreme stuff they are covering. After just binging on the first 5 seasons of Anthony Bourdains No Reservations as well as his new CNN show I find him far better. And really Vice is just a slightly more hardcore version of those shows. Other than that its a great view at some of whats going on in the world.
