News Briefs: Joss Whedon Is Bringing a S.H.I.E.L.D. Series to ABC

BUSINESS TIME

... The biggest news of today actually came in late last night, but the much-discussed rumblings are now confirmed: Joss Whedon is bringing a S.H.I.E.L.D. series to ABC. Whedon will co-write the pilot with his brother Jed as well as Maurissa Tancharoen, and there’s a possibility that he'll direct the project as well. I’m not that familiar with the comics, but this seems like a solid premise for a series set in the Marvel world, and it should help ABC replenish its drama docket, which is full of long-in-the-tooth shows, Shonda Rhimes shows, and long-in-the-tooth Shonda Rhimes shows. Samuel L. Jackson better appear from time to time on that new Marvel show - it's never really S.H..I.E.L.D. if Nick Fury isn't around.

My favorite S.H.I.E.L.D. was the version in Doom 2099. One problem I've had with most of the S.H.I.E.L.D. comic series has been that they were more about Nick Fury than S.H.I.E.L.D. I'd be more interested in a series like Search or Name of the Game, which focused on rotating groups of lead characters who worked for the same organization, with new versions of Jasper Sitwell, Gabe Jones, Agent 13, for example.

Seth McFarlane and Joseph Gordon-Letvitt on SNL? Awesome.

S.H.I.E.L.D. means Nick Fury. Although we could also get some other characters. Let's hope this one has nothing to do with Hasselhoff.

i'd watch sixty eight episodes of rnc

I hope it's better than Dollhouse.

dollhouse was awesome!! elisa dushku is an amazing actress and the premise was very original

Eliza Dushku was terrible. The premise was decent, but was ruined by the terrible acting, and the doll of the week nonsense.

Dollhouse was pretty much two different shows - Whedon's Dollhouse and Fox's Dollhouse. Season two was Fox giving up and letting Whedon's take control and make it the way he wanted, which is why it was so much better. And yes, Eliza Dushku was not the greatest, as much as I loved her as Faith.

If Joss is a part of it, I'll trust it'll be great and I'll be sure to watch it.

I'll watch the SHIELD show, even though I wasn't really fond of those things in the other Marvel stuff.. but it's Joss so whatever

I still watch Wipeout but I'm getting tired of it, they show it too often a year, and they often like to do more than one a week.. the obstacles aren't as good either, things pop out as people run at them which makes it seems like they don't give them a chance.. season 1 and 2 were better. and I'm glad Jill Wagner will be back.

The Beverly Hills Cop revival doesn't sound like a great idea; it sounds like Fox's Get Smart with Andy Dick. And did you imply the first three hosts of the upcoming season of Saturday Night Live were bad because they're white males? If so, I disagree: (1) all three are performers of some sort (as opposed to politicians or people like Paris Hilton or the Kardassians who are famous for being famous); and (2) it's nice to see the show have at least a couple of host who were born before SNL first aired. That felt insulting, and I'm not even a Teabagger.

SHIELD from the Men In Black variety seen in Iron Man, or the paramilitary organization seen in The Avengers? Both could be interesting, but it'd be very challenging to get both to meet in a compelling manner without some sense of divide somewhere.

Axel Foley really cannot be chief of police, he's too much a street cop who plays by his own rules, plus he's cheesed off a lot of Beverly Hills political types, I'd have a hard time seeing him rise to ranking officer. Still, Shawn Ryan made Terriers into something I lament the passing of, so maybe it'll work.

I'm a little worried about Modern Family's pay bumps, it's not that I don't think they deserve it, but it sends a very bad message to television execs who would decide on whether or not to pick up another ensemble-based show in the future. But, if the cast can keep the message going that ABC is making more money with their show, it might bear out.

As a straight guy, I am sick to death of shows about guys "breaking free" of marriage. Whose fault is it that YOU entered into a marital contract before making sure you were compatible? It's time we stop perpetuating the idea that a relationship is someone else's responsibility and it fails only when that other person screws up, that a failed relationship is something someone did TO you, rather than a series of mistakes and bad choices and laziness on both parties' parts which is what it really is. The nagging, bitter ex-wife character on TV is an unhealthy stereotype told from a selfish perspective - if she was always a miserable pain in the ass, why did you marry her in the first place? And if she wasn't always awful, does it not take two to tango, did you really do nothing to make her a worse person? And if you HAD to marry her, whose penis did you forget to put the condom on, hers? Lazy, selfish, stupid, and the only solace you should gather from that is that someone else in the relationship also screwed up in those areas. More importantly, stop writing those characters into TV shows, it sucks and it only makes women hate men more.

HOLY CRAP JILL WAGNER IS BACK ON WIPEOUT?!? That is kind of awesome. If Vanessa Lachey (that's her name now) weren't pregnant though, she'd be totally bearable in the next season and I never thought I'd feel that way about her, she's kind of grating on my nerves in other stuff but here it works (except now she'll have fired out a baby and need to take care of it).

Wow, SNL sounds pretty good, except for that ugly creepy man they're going to pretend is James Bond - he does seem to have a good sense of humor though, so while I'm still bitter that he's James Bond, I'm not bitter that he'll host SNL.

A S.H.I.E.L.D. series, huh? Sounds interesting, I'll watch it! As for a Beverly Hills Cop series? Well, as long as it's funny and Eddie appears occasionally, I'll watch it.

I'm not watching S.H.I.E.L.D until it has been picked up for season 2.

Oh yeah that's some good thinking....

So let me get this straight. Your not going to watch the whole first season in fear that it might not make it to a second season. I hope you guys see the error in that logic because if everybody takes the same stance as you two it will be canceled before it even hits the end of season one.

And we will all know who to thank for that.....

Well....that also depends if he has a nielson box. :) If he doesn't, it likely wouldn't matter....and if you have a nielson box, at least give the first four episodes a try and check out the ratings for the show.

(I'm a she.) Firstly it doesn't matter if I don't watch it as I don't live in the States. Secondly it was just a dig at Joss Whedon getting cancelled re Firefly.

Sorry, did you get the Modern Family money right? $70000 per episode doesn't sound like a ridiculous figure when put up against that annoying 2 and a Half Men kid...
Reply
Flag
....Do you realize how stupid you sound right now?
Reply
Flag
It really doesn't sound like a huge amount. Five of the adult cast members were offered around 200K per episode, and thought that was a good reason to *sue* their employers. Angus T Jones gets about 300K per episode of Two and a half men. Each of the four stars of Seinfeld got 1M per episode. The six stars of Friends got something similar. People like Ray Romano and Kelsey Grammer have made even more. Charlie Sheen got about 2M per episode.

That is sickening. Those amounts of money all laid out like that, I mean Christ, that is ridiculous.

I kind of figured that new Marvel was going to be something about S.H.I.E.L.D. Looking forwrd to it. Please God, please let that Beverley Hills Cop tv series come to tv. That just sounds like a great idea. Seth McFarlane on SNL is going to be hilarious.

Go Joss Whedon, happy to see more of your work!

Paranormal Witness is pretty scary, like a lot scarier than paranormal activity etc.... and a lot shorter than a movie.

Beverly Hills Cop as a series could be great!

American Horror Stories second season sounds pretty great, I'm curious how it will all fit together!

Thank god "The Second Coming of Rob" isn't the uncancellation of that horrific Rob Schneider shitcom.

S.H.I.E.L.D is an Espionage and Law enforcement agency that deals with Mega Crime. They are just one of the many agencies that protect Earth in The Marvel Universe along with S.W.O.R.D., A.R.M.O.R, H.A.M.M.E.R and S.T.R.I.K.E.

They also fight enemy agencied such as Advanced Idea Mechanics, Hydra and Zodiac.

As long as David Hasselhoff doesn't reprise his role of Nick Fury, S.H.I.E.L.D. should be fine...

For a while I thought it may have been that Jessica Jones series that nearly got made a few years ago. Otherwise a Heroes for Hire series. But here I wonder if any costumed heroes will appear at all. It would be a good chance for some fringe characters to get live action adaptions.

Seeing SHIELD is going to be interesting with it being set in the Marvel cinematic universe. I do wonder how they are going to do it though. Will we see any of the Avengers make cameo's? Nick Fury is the head of the organization so I hope Samuel L Jackson makes some appearances. It would have been great to focus on Maria Hill but Colby Smulders is on How I Met Your Mother.

How I Met Your Mother only has a season left I think. I'm sure I read that Radnor and Segel will not be renewing their contracts after season 8 and I can't see the show continuing without them.

Good news for SHIELD!

Actually recent articles have pointed out that Season 9 of HIMYM is likely to happen because Season 7 was the best year ratings-wise for the show. Negotiations are currently happening...but I guess it could still end this year. I love me some Cobie Smulders so as long as shes on my tv screen im good

Awesome!

Not only is SHIELD coming to TV led by the great JW.

But also, Kripke and Stuart are writing a show.

Can't wait to see both.

And also, Luke deserves that raise cause he is a phenomenally well portrayed character on Modern Family.

I was thinking the same thing about vera_asshole. Anyhoo...oops I mean anyhow, good day FringeFanatic, see you on another page.
Flag
Grammar and spelling are closely related. I was correcting a mistake. So yes, I would consider it to be ironical.

But now I'm more upset about being sucked into this argument. You're obviously one of those condescending and arbitrarily sanctimonious types, and this comment thread has become kind of pointless, so I bid you good day.
Flag
LOL! It's not really irony though, is it? A missing word is at best a typo, at the worst - a grammatical mistake. Not a spelling mistake either way...

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll go into a corner and think long and hard on my douchey-ness... oh wait, I won't.
Flag
@vera_paunova

Wow! I can't believe I ever thought spelling correctors were douchey when you are so clearly a better example. And I realize the irony of what I'm about to do, but after reading your comment, I just can't help it.

"I hate it when people are not only dumb enough not *TO* be able to spell correctly in their own bloody language"

Think on that.
Flag
If I really felt that way, I would've deleted my comments. I took a jab at Cory, and I paid for it.
Flag
I hate it when people are not only dumb enough not be able to spell correctly in their own bloody language, but are also arrogant enough to be proud of their own ignorance. Esp. when they're being insulting to begin with. How you write and speak reflects how you think... that is, if you think at all...
Flag
You're welcome! Yeah, that's a common mistake, but I agree with you FF.
Flag
I hate when people feel the need to correct spelling errors. It always comes off very douchey.

And yes, I know douchey isn't an actual word.

SHIELD could be great. Couple that with Shawn Ryan's Last Resort and ABC can maybe, just maybe run away from the waste of space that is any Shondra Rhimes show.

I can't believe that Sci Fi is wasting more space that could be filled with awesomeness with more Paranormal Witness. Please let us further enable peoples delusions. However, the special effects this season are hilarious.

And I was hesitant about Beverly Hills Cop tv show. But if Shawn Ryan is in on it, I am all for it.

Paranormal Witness is actually one of the few good shows Syfy has left. At least it actually has something to do with sci fi or the supernatural. It's entertaining and even if you don't believe every thing is real I find it just as scary or scarier than many horror movies that are similar in nature and twice as long.

What other awesomeness would you want on SyFy? I say V season 3 for starters!
Reply
Flag
If V season 3 has Laura Vandervoort is in it then I would be all for that. Or any tv show with her in it. Or just an hour of her reading a book.

But as for Paranormal Witness. It is one of my I hate to love shows, I find all ghost shows pretty stupid. Mostly because belief in ghosts are kind of silly. As well as the whole field of parapsychology. So that is just kind of a nit pick. But in truth I would rather have that to laugh at than any of their super cheesy movies.
Reply
Flag
"What other awesomeness would you want on SyFy?"

Actual science-fiction.

.........And cheesy monster movies like Hippopacalypse.
Reply
Flag
I agree, but I wouldn't say get rid of Paranormal Witness. There are plenty of other shows that should get the boot first!
Reply
Flag
to Safibwana: If your going to break it down like that, just because it's paranormal doesn't mean there isn't an actual scientific reason behind the "paranormal" or "phenomena" and actually exploring that would make a good show, bringing the two together somehow, but I don't think we have the technological advancements necessary at this time to make real progress with out looking like another ghost hunting show.
Flag
It probably SHOULD be the first to go, thematically. It is true, wresting has nothing to do with science fiction, which makes its placement on that channel superfluous, but "the paranormal" is actually the opposite of science.
