News Briefs: Justin Chatwin Isn't Retuning to Shameless

SHAKEUP AT SHAMELESS

... Showtime's Shameless is going to be Justinless. Justin Chatwin, who plays Jimmy on the drama, will not be returning to the series, at least as a regular. There was no reason given for his departure, but producer John Wells did leave the possibility of a guest return open. The move is slightly odd, as Shameless increased its ratings in the third season, but his character Jimmy was [Season 3 spoiler alert!] possibly killed in the Season 3 finale (his fate was left ambiguous). In the U.K. series the show is based on, Jimmy apparently returns to Fiona, which makes sense because Fiona is really pretty. [THR]

BUSINESS TIME

... J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot production house has acquired the rights to The Twilight Zone writer Rod Serling's final unproduced screenplay, with the intention of developing it as a miniseries. We don't know what the screenplay is about, but we do know that it's called The Stops Along the Way and that this sounds like a great idea. [THR]

REALITY APOCALYPSE NEWS

... NBC's The Voice hit a series low for its Tuesday edition last night, notching a 3.0 in the adult demo. The latest cycle of America's Got Talent also premiered last night to a 3.1, the lowest premiere for the series yet. ABC's Extreme Weight Loss hit a 1.0, Fox's So You Think You Can Dance tallied a 1.6, and CBS's Brooklyn DA managed a 0.8, all down from previous weeks. I hope you don't think less of me when I say, "GOOD!" [TV By the Numbers]

... The 20th cycle of America's Next Top Model will crown its 20th "top model" who'll then fade into obscurity later this year. How later this year? Well, the new season starts on August 2! Also, the theme will be a guys vs. girls this time, and I hope they all still model women's clothes. [The CW via press release]

CASTING NEWS

... Bobby Cannavale is close to booking the lead for an upcoming HBO project from producers Martin Scorsese, Terence Winter, and Mick Jagger. Cannavale would play a record executive in the late '70s during the heyday of rock n' roll, disco, and hip hop hibbity hibbity hop you don't stop, when everyone snorted whatever was put in front of them. It'll be a reunion for Scorsese, Winter, and Cannavale, who worked together on Boardwalk Empire. This show will be a BLAST, and the Cannavale casting is spot on. [THR]

... There's a live episode of TV Land's Hot in Cleveland coming up (ummm, who asked for a live episode of Hot in Cleveland?), and it will bring a pair of guest-stars with it. William Shatner (Kirk!) and Brian Baumgartner (The Office) will participate in the Wednesday, June 19 live show, though details on their roles are still unknown. But apparently Betty White's character cuts in on some mob turf, so at least it has that going for it. [TV Land via press release]

... Jerry O'Connell is going to visit his wife at work. The Sliders star will guest-star on TNT's upcoming drama King & Maxwell, where his main squeeze Rebecca Romijn stars as a private investigator. O'Connell will also play a private dick, albeit one who isn't that great at his job. The series premieres on June 10, and O'Connell's episode will air in mid-July. O'Connell can also be seen on CBS this fall, in the network's new comedy We Are Men, or on the DVD box art for the complete series of The Defenders. [EW]

... The C. Thomas Howell comeback continues! Following stints on Alphas, Southland, and Revolution, Howell has found his latest stepping stone to the top in Sons of Anarchy. He'll join Season 6 as an ATF agent who may be a bit dirty. Shameless's Steve Howey will also be featured in the series. [TV Line]

As a person who has watched the original series (Shameless UK) Jimmy and Fiona leave by the end of season 2. And later Lip, Sheila, Veronica and other major characters drop like flies. I hope Shameless US is not heading the same direction.

And we also know it'll be the first Twilight Zone script to have lens flares. --- Sorry JJ, when you add CGI lens flares on top of as many intentional ones as you could get, including using flashlights, all in a setting that's supposed to be a serious area for user visibility and concentration, you are asking to be defined by it.

"Shameless" should learn from "Game of Thrones" and brutally kill their characters in front of horrified viewers so that no death is left ambiguous.

I lost respect for Jimmy in the last season so him not returning doesn't bother me one bit.

I think Fiona deserves so much better.

Shameless, oh I miss that show. I am so bummed that it is not returning until 2014. I wish it was earlier.

I disagree, I liked Jimmy even more this season

I used to like him and thought he was awesome but the way he treated Fiona wasn't right. He is not right for her.

The comparison with the UK version does not stand, because both Fiona and Jimmy left the show at the end of the 2nd season (getting married, if I'm correct).

I think it's good that Jimmy doesn't come back. It's even better that he will participate in a couple of episodes of the next season to give the character more closure (even if I wouldn't have minded leaving Jimmy's fate with a big question mark).

Jerry O'Connell is going to guest-star on King & Maxwell (as long as it's not yanked before mid-July).

Shameless's season finales always have a huge emotional pull and this year it came from Fiona leaving Steve/Jimmy that "goodbye" voicemail. If it turned out that he was just on a booze cruise with Estefania's dad, it would really cheapen that ending. Shameless is usually better than that, so I'm glad that (it appears) he's really dead.

So Jimmy did die.

Good news. I didn't hate Jimmy, but he was definitely one of the weakest characters on the show. Also him returning would basically be a repeat of the second half of season two, with Fiona having moved on and Jimmy trying to reconquer her. Yawn.

Exactly! That couple has run its course... N Shameless has always been bigger then that relationship.... I'm excited to see what this change means for Fiona's character... :)

I thought his story ended with the possibilty he was being carted back off to whatever South American drug den his wife and father-in-law were from. I will miss him, he and Emmy had great chemistry but the writers had a lot of fun with Fiona when he was still out of the picture, so I guess I wouldn't mind of he was only back as a teaser at the end of the season.

I thought Jimmy (or is it Steve?) died at the end of the last episode. I'm actually tired of his storyline and thought Fi's new boss would make a better match for her.

Yeah C. Thomas Howell and Steve Howey on SOA! Yeah summer and then SOA! Yeah Wednesday and Special Brew!

It was highly implied, but never confirmed. The guy was angry with him and pretty much forcing him onto the boat. Then later his henchmen gave Fiona a wad of cash... most like a pay-off for her loss.

But... no official confirmation. Heck, as far as Fiona knew, he just ran off.

I'm glad Jimmy's not returning. Their relationship was going in circles and getting on my nerves. Maybe they'll bring him back in a year or so once he fights his way out of a Colombian prison camp, but no rush on that.

Don't forget C. Thomas Howell's guest role on Criminal Minds. Great episodes.

Not really too shocked that Jimmy kicked rocks. I always had a soft spot for Jimmy but the relationship had run its course. Once he started looking down on them I knew it was over for sure. Oh well, on to the next one!

not cool to include so you think you can dance in your "good" comment, that is not some trash reality series, those dancers have insane talent and it's actually opened my eyes and mind to the art of dance.

awesome that c thomas howell is going to be on sons of anarchy.. always a bonus when's added, i don't think i'll ever forget his reaper role on criminal minds, man was he terrifyingly good in that.

definitely! it's one of the few reality shows i rate very high, it's brought me to tears on a number of occasions and inspired me and just got me thinking and seeing things different than before through observing the long and hard journeys the dancers go on with their families and to see how talented they are, it's quite an experience.

Cat Deeley should host everything. I appreciate the show for not focusing on the really bad people and instead showcasing true talent. Even the 'sob story' people have talent. The judging panel is the best around as well. Such a good show on so many levels. Plus they probably put more people to actual work than any of the other 'talent' shows. Many of the dancers go on to work in the industry for people like Lady Gaga etc. Twitch has done extremely well.

It is too bad that C. Thomas Howell had to go from the amazing SouthLAnd to REvolution and now to the ever downward spiraling SOA. Hopefully he will find something as good as SouthLAnd soon.

Jerry O'Connell is going to visit his wife at work, and he is going to be playing a private dick - their sex lives should be none of our concern

However

I really liked both Star Trek films and consider myself a Trekkie, but I know a few people that hated them and feel that he ruined the franchise. But that's a personal preference.

Now he's also doing Star Wars for Disney. That could be a disaster since I don't know what kind of input Disney will have on the matter. That could be good... or bad.

And finally, it only says his COMPANY is going to do the Rod Sterling thing. That doesn't necessarily mean he will be involved... though chances are it will.

I'm sure everyone is excited about more C. Thomas Howell, but it still doesn't count for anything until he's doing it in black face. Am I right, people? #SoulMan
