News Briefs: Kate Walsh Is Leaving Private Practice Next Season

CASTING NEWS, ATTRACTIVE LADIES EDITION

... Private Practice should just pull the plug on itself. Kate Walsh, the actress who the Grey's Anatomy spin-off was built around, has said that the upcoming season will be her last. She made the announcement on the new talk show Bethenny, which means she can back out of the statement because I don't think anyone is watching that show. [TV Line]

... And the role of Lily Munster in Bryan Fuller's Munsters reboot Mockingbird Lane goes to... Portia de Rossi! The Arrested Development star has taken over the role from True Blood's Mariana Klaveno, who got stuck in her contract for Devious Maids, a pilot that ABC passed on but Lifetime is interested in. Love Portia. Love Fuller. Not sure if love Mockingbird Lane, though. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Dexter has landed one of the more sought-after free-agent actresses on the market right now. For a few episodes, at least. Yvonne Strahovski, last seen as Sarah on Chuck, will play a character with the most cliché, generic, and uninformative description ever. From Showtime: She'll play "the role of Hannah McKay, a strong, independent woman with a past that she's struggled to put behind her." [Showtime via press release]

... Scandal has promoted actress Bellamy Young to regular status for Season 2. Young plays first lady Mellie Grant on the ABC show. [THR]

BUSINESS TIME

... ABC Family's new series Bunheads (which is totally good, by the way) got off to an okay start, which is a nice way of saying its numbers weren't that great. Just shy of 1.7 million viewers tuned in, well below the network's hits. However, the show did face competition from the Stanley Cup Finals, because as we all know hockey fans are also big Gilmore Girls/ballet fans. [TV By the Numbers]

... A & E's four-hour thriller Coma has a premiere date: September 3! The show stars Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under) as a doctor who discovers shenanigans going on at her hospital as patients fall into comas. Geena Davis, James Woods, Richard Dreyfuss, and Ellen Burstyn also star. [Deadline Hollywood]

... TLC has renewed What Not to Wear for a tenth season, because YOU JUST CAN'T TAKE A HINT APPARENTLY! Seriously, plaid with stripes? Are you blind? [EW]

NEWS THAT DIDN'T BELONG ANYWHERE ELSE

... Pretty Little Liars star Lucy Hale has signed a record deal with Hollywood Records and will bludgeon you with melodies sometime next year. [Just Jared]

Private Practice should end immediately because it's getting boring. Without Audra Mcdonald, and now Kate Walsh, it's gonna be a huge disaster.

Private Practice has gone downhill the last two seasons. I'm pretty much the biggest fan of the show you can find, and believe me, I HOPE it gets cancelled.

I hope Walsh gets a new show, though! Love her <3

I think they ought to bring back Addison and Izzie to Grey's Anatomy. It's too back they killed off Lexie, she was a great asset to the show. I'm looking forward to the new season.

Just cancel Private Practice already... I absolutely loathe Violet, she and Pete have zero chemistry, the show has gotten completely lost, it has no direction, it's boring and you feel no connection to any of the characters.

I wonder why she is leaving. There goes any chance of her returning to Grey's...sigh.

Leaving your own spinoff? Who does she think she is, Lisa Bonet?

If only Ellen Pompeo would take the same intiative. But still kind of sad to hear Kate's leaving. I actually like Private Practice

With Kate Walsh leaving and Tim Daly leaving. They mine as well just cancel the show.

Love Fuller. Love de Rossi. Therefore, despite my general skepticism, my optimism for Munsters is growing!

Love Strahovski. Still kind of love Dexter. Hopefully she's part of a "revival" of sorts to the show, and not part of another fairly weak season (like 5 and 6).

Pretty sure the entire cast is "leaving" private practice after next season.

I feel ya with the trepidation about Mockingbird Lane, Tim. That said, I do think Portia de Rossi is not a bad little piece of casting for Lilly, Portia has a dry sense of humor, she's tall and attractive, has experience dramedys, and the character was a bit of a ham like she can be. I dunno about her playing against Jerry O'Connell though, they seem like different styles of acting.

What Not to Wear revived Mayim Bialik's career (the acting one, not the super science one or the parenting one), so I guess it deserves to coast. Plus, there's still a lot of fashion disasters out there (I'm a straight guy, so when I can point them out, you KNOW they're bad!), the number of hipsters alone should keep this show going another century.

I think Private Practice is a little played out now, the story lines are not that good anymore... I would love to see Kate Walsh in a comedy:)

The worst storyline right now on PP is the one of Kate, so I dont care that much about her!

Love the show!

Didn't they already cancel Private Practice?

Ah come on TV people. Yvonne Strahovski needs a show all to her self. Preferably one where she gets to where a similar wienerlicious outfit. Or any outfit. At all.

Is Bellamy Young's promotion going to affect her duties as Hotch's future wife on Criminal Minds? I hope not. As for Lucy Hale, considering she was discovered as a singer and not an actress, I think she'll be good. I might put her on my iPod.

Really glad you mentioned that Bunheads was actually good. I didn't want to watch cos even though I was a fan of GG, the ads made Sutton Foster look insufferable. But I watched it last night and I found myself laughing out loud. The sets aren't as convincing as Stars Hollow (honestly, everytime they're inside, I forget it's a beach show) but it's nice.

------Oh and yea, The Munsters is by far, one of my favorite shows so normally I would hate a remake but Bryan Fuller has never let me down yet.

Such a shame they passed on Portia de Rossi's other comedy, The Smart One. And despite the fact it's a reboot, I'm willing to give Mockingbird Lane a chance next year just because I like Portia and Bryan Fuller's work.

whats the point of Private Practice without Kate Walsh ? just end it !

so basically Private Practice will end then, or get cancelled soon after she leaves. it hasn't been good since like season 2 anyway, unless you like a show that's supposed to be medical drama but is actually only about fighting with and screwing each other.

wait, wasn't Portia de Rossi going to be on a show with Malin Akerman or something? Honestly, I wasn't too keen on a Munsters reboot but I've loved all of Bryan Fuller's shows so far.. so I'll check it out

Lucy Hale signing to Hollywood Records doesn't surprise me, she's on an ABC Family show which is basically Disney for older (mostly girl) teens.. and Hollywood Records is where all the Disney people go (except for black horse Ashley Tisdale who went to WB way back when).. and she was on American Juniors, plus didn't she do some movies where she sang or something?

The show with Portia de Rossi and Malin Akerman was going to be called The Smart One, but it looks like ABC has passed on it, unfortunately.
