News Briefs: Lifetime Hires Devious Maids

BUSINESS TIME

... ABC's trash is Lifetime's treasure. Devious Maids, a pilot by Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry, was recently passed on by ABC, but Lifetime has vacuumed it up for its own schedule. The soap follows four Latina maids as they clean houses and strive for more in Beverly Hills. The cast includes Ana Ortiz, Judy Reyes, Dania Ramirez, Susan Lucci, and Brett Cullen. Look for it to sweep its way into your corazon over 13 episodes in 2013. [Lifetime via press release]

... MTV's Snooki & JWoww didn't exactly "wow" (HAHA) in its debut last night. Only 2.4 million viewers tuned in to watch the Jersey Shore spin-off, which is lower than the debut viewership for Pauly D.'s spin-off The Pauly D Project. Looks like we're getting smarter and smarter. Keep it up and civilization may have a chance at making it to 2020! [EW]

... Canada doesn't have talent: Canada's Got Talent has been canceled after one season, presumably because all the talented Canadians are already doing stand-up in America. [THR]

... MTV's remake of the British comedy The Inbetweeners has a premiere date: August 20. The high-school comedy follows four friends as they do high-school things like study, play with their pet turtles, and wash their mothers' feet. What? That's what I did in high school. [Digital Spy]

CASTING NEWS

... Smash will welcome Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson for a recurring role next season. Hudson will play a Broadway star who has "paid the price" for fame, which I'm guessing means a luxurious drug habit and endless sex with male models. [NBC via press release]

... Fringe's Blair Brown and Dexter's David Monahan will be joining USA Network's miniseries Political Animals for guest spots. Brown will play the mother of Carla Gugino's character, a reporter who's digging up dirt on the political family at the center of the series. Monahan will play an in-the-closet Republican. [Zap2It]

... 24 vet Riley Smith is adding more numbers to his IMDB profile. Smith will recur on 90210 next season as a love interest for Annie Wilson (Shenae Grimes). [TV Line]

... Marilyn Manson will guest-star on Californication, playing herself in the seventh episode of the upcoming season. Who is this chick? [Showtime via press release]

... Former A Gifted Man star and handsome man-about-town Patrick Wilson will guest-star on HBO's Girls as a possible love interest for Hannah (Lena Dunham). I'm assuming there will be some roofies, voodoo, or love potions involved because no way this happens when everyone is sober. Sorry, it's the truth. [TV Line]
