News Briefs: Lifetime Hires Devious Maids

BUSINESS TIME

... ABC's trash is Lifetime's treasure. Devious Maids, a pilot by Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry, was recently passed on by ABC, but Lifetime has vacuumed it up for its own schedule. The soap follows four Latina maids as they clean houses and strive for more in Beverly Hills. The cast includes Ana Ortiz, Judy Reyes, Dania Ramirez, Susan Lucci, and Brett Cullen. Look for it to sweep its way into your corazon over 13 episodes in 2013. [Lifetime via press release]

... MTV's Snooki & JWoww didn't exactly "wow" (HAHA) in its debut last night. Only 2.4 million viewers tuned in to watch the Jersey Shore spin-off, which is lower than the debut viewership for Pauly D.'s spin-off The Pauly D Project. Looks like we're getting smarter and smarter. Keep it up and civilization may have a chance at making it to 2020! [EW]

... Canada doesn't have talent: Canada's Got Talent has been canceled after one season, presumably because all the talented Canadians are already doing stand-up in America. [THR]

... MTV's remake of the British comedy The Inbetweeners has a premiere date: August 20. The high-school comedy follows four friends as they do high-school things like study, play with their pet turtles, and wash their mothers' feet. What? That's what I did in high school. [Digital Spy]

CASTING NEWS

... Smash will welcome Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson for a recurring role next season. Hudson will play a Broadway star who has "paid the price" for fame, which I'm guessing means a luxurious drug habit and endless sex with male models. [NBC via press release]

... Fringe's Blair Brown and Dexter's David Monahan will be joining USA Network's miniseries Political Animals for guest spots. Brown will play the mother of Carla Gugino's character, a reporter who's digging up dirt on the political family at the center of the series. Monahan will play an in-the-closet Republican. [Zap2It]

... 24 vet Riley Smith is adding more numbers to his IMDB profile. Smith will recur on 90210 next season as a love interest for Annie Wilson (Shenae Grimes). [TV Line]

... Marilyn Manson will guest-star on Californication, playing herself in the seventh episode of the upcoming season. Who is this chick? [Showtime via press release]

... Former A Gifted Man star and handsome man-about-town Patrick Wilson will guest-star on HBO's Girls as a possible love interest for Hannah (Lena Dunham). I'm assuming there will be some roofies, voodoo, or love potions involved because no way this happens when everyone is sober. Sorry, it's the truth. [TV Line]

I really hope your comment about Marilyn Manson was a bad joke. If you work in editorializing show business and dont know who he is, maybe its time to find a new line of work...cmon Tim, ur normally one of the better writers around here...

I've seen the pilot of this show. It is gawd awful. Bad script, bad acting. I'm not surprised ABC passed on this show.

Not sure The Inbetweeners remake will be any good, the UK one has so much Brit humour that doesn't translate.

Like I always say, only in the world of TV ratings is 2,400,000 considered "not a lot of people."

Lifetime, what have you become? :(

i'm fairly certain you're the one who turned me on to The Inbetweeners in the first place, Tim. how do you feel about this? yeah, it's gonna suck. unless they have the orignal cast... and writers ... etc. skins i enjoyed for the skin but the storylines and acting were seriously lacking. skins uk had gone downhill since seasons (series') 1 and 2 anyway.

i thought 90210 was cancelled but i guess that was just wishful thinking?

pretty funny the headline regarding marilyn manson and johnny depps friendship was titled "johnny depp's odd friendship." and makes me wish that constituted slander.

i could totally see patrick wilson hooking up with frumpy chunky chicks.

about the Devious Maids picture hope they realised there's a nice baby Doll in the middle & it's an inner joke for the show or else someone's gonna get fired over this :)

Most shows use baby dolls in scenes where the baby isn't being directly shown for the well-being of the child and so they can work with baby actors for as little time as possible. It's a pretty common practice.

Considering that Marc Cherry's secondary characters, including children, on Desperate Housewives were nothing more than props to be used in creating situations for that show's main cast, it's not surprising, and probably appropriate, he finally may have decided to actually use a doll in this series.

I agree with FringeFanatic's post. Also, I was really only interested in one act on the show (Ivan Daigle, he's a singer). I liked Martin Short as a judge. He's hilarious.

Meh. I watched bits of Canada's Got Talent every now and then, and it kinda bored me. I didn't quite understand why I found it worse than the American version (we can't be that much less talented, right?), but it may have had to do with not knowing who the two judges not named Martin Short were.

Patrick Wilson is a great actor, but I absolutely cannot stand 'Girls'. I couldn't even make it through a few minutes of some episode I randomly caught one night.

...is that Carla from Scrubs up in that Devious Maids picture?

Yes it's her.

wait.. MTV's remaking The Inbetweeners? I knew somebody was doing Misfits but not The Inbetweeners too. too bad both will probably suck because if both of those shows were in the US to begin with they'd probably have been HBO/Showtime type of material.

Is that a Republican who hasn't come out as a Democrat or a Democrat who hasn't come out as a Republican?

MTV are remaking The Inbetweeners? Are they crazy?! There is no way that is going to be anywhere near the original. This is a very bad move...

Didn't we also say that about Teen Wolf?

And also about Skins...

To correct my first comment: I didn't like Skins remake, at all. The original is just too perfact in comparison

Skins remake was a huge pile of garbage whereas Teen Wolf's way better than the movie even though Michael J Fox's a great actor

99% of the contestants on America's Got Talent are either zany, crazy, or batshit crazy, and everybody gets a laugh from their hilarious insanity. I think us Canadians are generally just too stable and normal to be able to sustain a show like Canada's Got Talent.

Should I feel insulted or should I be laughing? because I'm both.
