News Briefs: Microsoft and Steven Spielberg Are Making a Live-action Halo TV Series for Xbox

HERE COMES THE FLOOD NEWS

... Of all the big news to come out of today's Xbox One announcement, the biggest announcement is that Call of Duty: Ghosts will feature dogs! But the second biggest, for TV fans at least, is that Microsoft is making a live-action television series based on the Halo franchise. We previously knew that that the company was getting into original programming for its console, but this came as a pleasant surprise. No, one-time Halo movie director Neill Blomkamp (District 9) won't be involved, but Steven Spielberg will. The famed director will produce the project, which will be exclusive to the new console. Spielberg has plenty of experience with aliens and space, having given us E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, but his recent alien activities, like Falling Skies (which he produces), leave a lot to be desired. Let's also not forget that he produced Smash. If Master Chief breaks out into song using an Energy Sword as a faux-microphone, I will personally hunt down Spielberg and shove an Assault Rifle up his ass. Currently, there are very few details available, but count me in. BTW I still play Halo 4 (nerd alert) and I kick 12-year-old ass. [Xbox via live press conference]

BUSINESS TIME

... Though stats had already predicted it, it's now almost definitely official: CBS has won the prized 18-49 ratings demo for the 2012-2013 season with a 2.9 average, breaking Fox's eight-year run as champ. CBS has won the overall viewers title for 10 out of the last 11 seasons, but hasn't won the demo title in over 20 years. Fox finished second with 2.5, NBC narrowly missed second with a 2.4, and ABC finished fourth with a 2.2. [EW]

... Discovery Channel has ordered Blood and Oil, a reality series following a family-run oil company in the Midwest as it struggles to stay operational alongside the big oil companies. It will debut on June 18 at 10pm. In other news, there are family-run oil companies!? [THR]

... TLC is reviving Lisa Kudrow's failed NBC reality series Who Do You Think You Are?, which pulled celebrities up on stage and revealed through extensive genealogy research that their great-great-grandparents owned slaves or invented the toothpick. Eight new one-hour episodes will debut on the home of Honey Boo Boo on July 23. Seriously, if they don't dig up the past of Honey Boo Boo's family, this is all a huge waste of time. I bet Great Great Grandma Boo Boo was royalty. [The Wrap]

... If you were hoping for a second season of Fox's The Goodwin Games, which debuted yesterday, stop. Only 1.6 million people watched Monday's series premiere. [TV By the Numbers]

... CMT has ordered 11 more episodes of Dog and Beth, the latest reality show starring Dog the Bounty Hunter. That brings the Season 1 total to 22 episodes. [CMT.com]

... Ricky Gervais's comedy Derek has a U.S. premiere date: September 12 on Netflix Instant. The series, about the title character who works in a retirement home, already aired in the U.K. where it has been picked up for a second season. [Netflix via press release]

... If you can't wait for Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and need your Avengers universe fix, you can give Marvel's Avengers Assemble a try. The animated series will debut on July 7 on Disney XD, but will show off a preview hour this Sunday, May 26 at 11am. Expect to see all the costume-wearing superdudes and superdudettes punching bad guys in the face. [Disney XD via press release]

SORTA CASTING NEWS

... Your hosts for the 2013 Miss Teen USA competition are: Nick Jonas and Giuliana Rancic! The competition will air live on NBC on Sunday, June 16. [NBC via press release]

I wonder who came up with the live action Halo idea first, me or someone at Microsoft. -_-

"BTW I still play Halo 4 (nerd alert)"

HAHAHAHAHAHA! That doesn't make you a nerd.

Halo is a very posturing, dude-bro series. It's for fratboys, not nerds. If you were a nerd you'd be playing Ni No Kuni or something with the word "Disgaea" in it.

slow news day, one of the first times nothing in the news brief interested me even a little.

Spielberg as executive producer means nothing, sometimes he's great, and sometimes he's:
-Batteries Not Included
-Always
-The Flintstones (movie)
-Casper the live-action ghost movie
-Twister
-Transformers the live-action movie series that makes you want to dig out your own eyes
-Real Steel
-Terra Nova
Anyway, the fact that this series will be exclusive to the Xbox One means nobody will be watching it, and also that it'll be terrible and short-lived and doom chances for a Halo movie.

CBS's overall viewership dominance numbers are even more amusing, but it is nice to see that Fox can screw up so badly that they give away the farm.

Speaking of Fox giving away the farm... "What, The Goodwin Games wasn't a success? No way"... said no one, ever.

I'm a Halo fan, I hope the movie is good, Speilberg has had a few misses in the past.

Sorry, it's a show, and it's looking like it may be exclusive to the new Xbox One console.

The Goodwin Games wasn't bad... I could see myself watching it. Especially since the Summer is quite light on shows and the premise was amusing.

It wasn't "GREAT" but I can't think of that many "great" sitcoms... especially after just viewing the pilot.

That all being said: I'm not married to the show and figured it would probably fizzle out.

'Lisa Kudrow's failed NBC reality series Who Do You Think You Are?', or the Lisa Kudrow backed US version of the BBC series....

You don't need a crystal ball to see the fate of The Goodwin Games.

I have seen Machinima's "Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn", which gives me the impression that a Halo series is a good idea. Can't wait.

Forward Unto Dawn shows there's a potential for a full series, and that it can be done cheaply enough to air on YouTube--or Syfy. But I can't see Spielburg airing Halo and Falling Skies at the same time.

It's too bad The Goodwin Games pretty much came pre-cancelled, it was actually a lot better than expected.

Who Do You Think You Are? was an interesting show, but the problem is that unless it's a celebrity you liked, you probably wouldn't watch it.. TLC has nothing to do with learning anymore, I think Discovery, while mainly focusing on dumb reality shows, would've been a better fit.. as long as you have Honey Boo Boo on your schedule, you can't be taken seriously.

The first episode of Avengers Assemble's two part premiere is also available for free on iTunes.

When Spielberg is making a project by himself, its all pretty terrific. He goes wrong with producing shows since he can't pay attention to them and just lends his name. So, no need to be an ass, Tim.

He produced Back to the Future and was on set giving advice a lot, that was good. He just collected checks on the sequels though.

Why are people going to tune in for a show that Fox has already doomed? It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. Everyone knows Fox is airing Goodwin Games at the end of May because it has no intention of renewing.

Didn't Steven Spielberg produce Terra Nova?

I can't wait to download the new Halo show and stream it on my xbox 360.

If they restrict it to XBox One, you may be waiting a while.

Also, don't buy an XBox One. Look up yesterday's conference; it was a disaster.

lol It was terrible. But I'm sure the Halo show will make it to trackers as soon as it airs. Honestly though, I don't think I will buy one. I love my xbox 360 as an entertainment hub. I feel no need for the other features of the One (which is a really stupid name, btw).

As a producer Steven Spielberg's name means absolutely nothing on TV. His name is attached to anything and everything.

Like Animaniacs? That was worth something. I'm there with you Tim, 12 year olds don't know nothing. I just hope its even better than Forward Unto Dawn, which was pretty good.

When it comes to TV, *lately* it's been hit or miss. Partially because he's only involved early on and leaves and the people that take over just suck.

His name is attached to:
The River
Terra Nova
Falling Skies (still running, but gets mixed reviews)

Personally, I LIKED all of the above (especially The River). But 2 of them lasted barely a season and the last one gets mixed reviews.
