News Briefs: Netflix Renews Lilyhammer for Season 3

THE ORIGINAL BINGER

... Netflix is dropping the 'Hammer! Or rather, it's doing the opposite of that. It's hard to say, because slang is moving so fast that "drop" has like 24 meanings among kids ages 4 to 22. But Netflix has renewed Lilyhammer for Season 3, is what I'm trying to say. It'll consist of eight episodes and debut sometime this year. [Netflix via press release]

BUSINESS TIME

... El Rey Network is a new thing that's coming to your television, and the biggest of the things it will bring is an adaptation of From Dusk Till Dawn, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's Mexican vampire flick. And now it was a premiere date! From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series will drop on March 11. Also headed to the fledgling network are Lucha Libre Mexican wrestling broadcasts, a docuseries about youth subcultures (those crazy kidz!), and Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman's Matador, a drama about a soccer star who moonlights as a CIA agent. This network sounds like a good time if you're high on rubber cement all the time. BONUS: Here's a trailer for From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series! [El Rey Network via press release]

... Pivot (which is ALSO a network, take my word for it) has ordered a second season of Hitrecord On TV, Joseph Gordon-Levitt's weird variety show. I still don't know if it's "hit record" as in "hit wreck-erd" or "hit re-chord." Or "leave-it" of "levv-it" or "joss-iff" or "josé-ff." I can't read! No word yet on when Season 2 drops. [Pivot via press release]

... Tween alert! Disney Channel has renewed its "hit comedy" (their words, not mine) Liv and Maddie for a second season. Season 2 will drop this fall. [Disney Channel via press release]

... Getting ready for the fall season already, NBC has ordered pilots for Constantine and Mysteries of Laura. NBC put Constantine in development back in September, because every other network has a superhero/comic show airing or in development and NBC refuses to acknowledge my petition to bring back The Cape. Mysteries of Laura, from Arrow's Greg Berlanti, comes via a Spanish show, and follows a female detective as she takes on cases and deals with her ex-husband and twin boys. There is no drop date for either of these, sorry! [TVGuide.com]

... The new season of Worst Cooks in America drops Monday, February 17 at 9pm on Food Network! Or you can just eat your wife's cooking again, am I right fellas? I will be here all week! Seriously, I'm helming News Briefs all week while Kaitlin is at TCAs in Los Angeles and I'm expressing my displeasure through poor attempts at jokes. [Food Network via used napkin]

... NBC is just like, "Guys 18-49 love tits, right?" and will air Sports Illustrated Swimsuit: 50 Years of Beautiful. The two-hour special will involve someone trying to say really interesting things about bikinis and lots of us at home pausing on "is that a nipple?" shots of Kate Upton rolling around on a sandy third-world beach. The special drops Monday, February 3 at 9pm. [NBC via press release]

... The Returned's second season will air sometime this fall on Sundance Channel. I mean, it drops this fall! This show is so damn good that it's all I want to watch ever. Seriously, watch it now! Your starving baby can wait! [News goddess Kaitlin Thomas via TCA panels]

... Ratings time! Syfy's Helix dropped on Friday and 1.8 million viewers tuned in, which I think is okay, but not good enough for Syfy to really pimp any stat except that it was the "best series premiere day ever on Syfy.com." Fox's Enlisted also dropped on Friday, and it did not go so well despite lots of critics clapping their hands for it (I found it to be pleasant but not that funny). Only 2.4 million viewers tuned in, which translated to a 0.7 rating among the 18-49-year-old set. That's pretty awful. At least there's a time slot to blame. And the Golden Globes hit a 10-year high last night with 20.9 million viewers. Check out Price's photo recap! [Syfy via press release / TV Line / Deadline Hollywood]

CASTING NEWS

... Chuck's Joshua Gomez will stop by The Crazy Ones for a guest appearance. He'll play an ad copywriter in the season's 16th episode. [THR]

... The Big Bang Theory is bringing in some love for Raj. Tania Raymonde, who you might know as Ben's daughter Alex but who I know as the young lady who once dated Jeff Goldblum, will play a potential love interest for Raj in this season's Valentine's Day episode. But wait! There's more! James Earl Jones and Carrie Fisher will also stop by for an episode. [TV Line / TV Line]

I don't understand why so many people bother to watch the Golden Globes.

(Almost) Everything's dropping like flies!

Shouldn't that NBC Constantine article read "NBC pre-cancels Constantine" since we all know that's how it'll go? They'll release 4 episodes on the worst timeslot available, make the show nothing like the Vertigo comics character, then complain that nobody's watching and kill it quietly.

To be fair, just about everybody of all genders love tits, Tim. And no, it's not an uncovered nipple, it's never an uncovered nipple if it's attached to a woman.

Damn, Fox really knows how to suck the ratings out of a show. How are they still a network with shows premiering to a 0.7?

James Earl Jones and Carrie Fisher on The Big Bang Theory? Swoon! Hey, where's the droppage?

I'm glad they're calling it From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series. How else would we know that it's a series. In fact why isn't every tv show, movie, novel, poem, painting, song, ballet, opera, symphony, play and sculpture doing this as well. How else would we ever know what sort of thing we're watching/reading/listening to?

The Returned's second season.... I thought it was starting filming this February? If Kaitlin is right, then Channel 4 in the UK might start showing it even earlier than Autumn! That would make my year, this show is just too good.

Tania Raymonde was also the weird girl from several episodes of "Malcolm." I've always felt if she got the right part she could become huge.

Dusk Till Dawn finally on the horizon! Effin' cool! =D

Constantine on the other hand...in my dreams I can only hope could be cool. I'm happy 'ol Johnny's finally gettin' some TV love after a couple decades, but It's impossible for the fanboy in me to properly trust any network to not screw it up all royal-like. I'd love to be wrong but there's that semi-recent & embarrassing New 52 reboot of the character that happened. ewww! ::shudder::

Constantine on NBC, how is that not bad enough? New 52 ruined the character by going "Vertigo? Pfft! Fuck that, let's sanitize him into the DC universe" but this will be worse, I promise.

heh! besides the fact that NBC tends to have their heads up their asses & I know it's a total pipe dream to think DC will allow a network to go off book & ignore the DCU, because of how NBC allowed Fuller to do Hannibal, that hopeless little pipe dream of Hellblazer still sits in my mind until the day they release the teaser trailer & utterly kill it

Hate that expression, "drops". Where exactly does that come from anyway? Must be Tim's calender word of the day.

The Returned was very good, probably more interesting, up until the last two episodes. Maybe the new season will address my questions / concerns on that.

I've seen Lilyhammer. It's watchable, but not good. I don't think I will be checking out the next season.

What!!!! NBC is making a tv show based on Hellblazer!!! We all know that's going to be good (Sarcasm). How could this work on NBC when the content is more HBO????? I hope this ends up in Development Hell.....

I would love to see a cable version! Don't have high hopes for an NBC version, but then there is Hannibal, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed

You dropped more than the English cricket team! (yeah, that was a lame Australian cricket joke that the American readers on this site won't understand)

You are correct I did not understand so I took to Google so that I would not be just another ignorant American. Google sent me to Wikipedia for a Glossary of Cricket definitions, and I still don't understand what a drop is. Back to being an ignorant American... *Hangs head, drapes American flag over shoulders*

just an update for ya: the more I dig for info on both El Rey & the series, the Network is his personal dream baby & the DTD series is something he's personally directing 3 episodes of, so he's not shaking his head at all...he's nodding it with a smile

Robert Rodriguez. is the undisputed king of low budget. The whole of El Mariachi was self produced for somewhere under $8000 and the #1 gold standard for how to make a kick ass action flick with absolute chump-change. As long as El Rey's production company follows Los Hooligans long time model of film making with the series (which is most likely) the charm of it lies within the kitsch & is almost guaranteed to turn a profit for the network even if ratings don't meet expectations

Actually, he's the king of mid-budget, Desperado, all the Spy Kids movies, Sin City, Predators, Machete... he's quoted as saying he loves to work in mid-range budget where he can do a lot without the studio looking over his shoulder and they'll almost always make money back.

all that's true, but none of his other movies would have happened as they did if it wasn't for his ability to shoot El Mariachi so well & be experimental on such a low shoestring. it's that skill that that worked against him as he was getting famous since the studios made a habit of being stingy with their funding of his later flicks

I do not know how long they can keep Helix going, but having seen the 1st two episodes. I find it interesting and creepy, just enough I want to know what is to come. I cannot see this being a multi season show but it could get more and more interesting.

Been meaning to check out Lillyhammer, but my to do list is long for TV shows, hopefully get to it this century.

Carrie Fisher and James Earl Jones, be interesting to see if they play themselves or another character.

Most of the other news, blah, but doing a Constantine TV show i think is a bad idea, I enjoyed the movie and like to see a sequal possibly, but not a tv show. Besides with Supernatural and Sleepy Hollow, I think we have had enough demon related shows for now. I enjoy both those shows but there is such a thing as over saturating the market and NBC just does not understand you need to be the first, not last with an idea.

I've recently started watching the first season of Lilyhammer, and while it's not on the same level as some of Netflix's other shows, it is still pretty enjoyable, so I'm glad they're having a 3rd season.
