News Briefs: Netflix Wants to Save The River Too?

OH THIS AGAIN NEWS

... Netflix is trying to play White Knight again with a show that's in danger of cancellation. This time it's ABC's The River, which just finished its first season a few nights ago. But just like it was with Fox's Terra Nova, this is just talk until something really happens. Expect Netflix to throw its name out there whenever a show is canceled. [Deadline Hollywood]


"CASE CLOSED" NEWS

... Whitney Houston's cause of death was announced by the L.A. County Coroner today. The singer died from drowning in her bathtub, and a nasty cocktail of cocaine, marijuana, Benadryl, Xanax, and Flexeril were all found in her system. [CBS News]

BAD START NEWS

... NBC's new comedy Bent debuted last night, but you probably didn't know that. Hardly anyone did. The first two episodes aired back-to-back with woeful ratings: 2.8 million viewers and a 1.0 adult demo rating for the first episode and 2.4 million viewers and a 0.9 rating for the second. Oof. CANCELLATIONS NEWS

... IFC has canceled The Onion News Network after two seasons. The fake news show had its moments, and host Brooke Alvarez was fantastic. But I guess it wasn't enough. [Huffington Post]


CASTING NEWS

... CBS's horribly titled Widow Detective continues to add to its cast, bringing on Jennifer Beals and Paula Marshall. The police drama centers on a cop who becomes involved with the families of three of his partners who were killed in the line of duty. Beals and Marshall will play two of the widows. ... Lost vet Rebecca Mader is hopping over to Fringe! She'll appear in the final two episodes of the season, playing a woman (OR WOMEN!) who's linked to David Robert Jones. [TV Guide]

... Mader's fellow Lostie Maggie Grace (she played Shannon) has joined Fox's thriller pilot that's from Kevin Williamson and stars Kevin Bacon. Grace will play a doctor who's the lone survivor of an attack by a serial killer. [EW]

... Fox's promising comedy pilot Rebounding has parted ways with Aly Michalka (Hellcats) after readjusting her character following a table read. The new character will be 10 years older, so we can't blame it all on Aly. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Martha Stewart will guest-star on Law & Order: SVU as a private-school headmaster. Look for her in an April episode that also features Arrested Development's Tony Hale. [TV Guide]

... Heroes' Jack Coleman is joining The CW's medical drama pilot First Cut, about a young female doctor trying to escape her geeky high school past only to find that the hospital she now works at isn't much different. Coleman will play the chief of staff. [Deadline Hollywood]
