News Briefs: Netflix Wants to Save The River Too?

OH THIS AGAIN NEWS

... Netflix is trying to play White Knight again with a show that's in danger of cancellation. This time it's ABC's The River, which just finished its first season a few nights ago. But just like it was with Fox's Terra Nova, this is just talk until something really happens. Expect Netflix to throw its name out there whenever a show is canceled. [Deadline Hollywood]

"CASE CLOSED" NEWS

... Whitney Houston's cause of death was announced by the L.A. County Coroner today. The singer died from drowning in her bathtub, and a nasty cocktail of cocaine, marijuana, Benadryl, Xanax, and Flexeril were all found in her system. [CBS News]

THE ENDS ARE NEAR NEWS

... CBS has announced its spring finale dates, so mark your calendars thusly:

April 8: CSI: Miami
April 29: The Good Wife
May 6: The Amazing Race
May 7: 2 Broke Girls
May 8: Unforgettable
May 9: CSI
May 10: The Big Bang Theory
May 11: Undercover Boss, CSI: NY, Blue Bloods
May 13: Survivor May 14: How I Met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men, Mike & Molly, Hawaii Five-0
May 15: NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles
May 16: Criminal Minds
May 17: Rules of Engagement, Person of Interest, The Mentalist

BAD START NEWS

... NBC's new comedy Bent debuted last night, but you probably didn't know that. Hardly anyone did. The first two episodes aired back-to-back with woeful ratings: 2.8 million viewers and a 1.0 adult demo rating for the first episode and 2.4 million viewers and a 0.9 rating for the second. Oof. Goodbye, Bent. Nice not knowing ya. [TV Line]

CANCELLATIONS NEWS

... IFC has canceled The Onion News Network after two seasons. The fake news show had its moments, and host Brooke Alvarez was fantastic. But I guess it wasn't enough. [Huffington Post]

CASTING NEWS

... CBS's horribly titled Widow Detective continues to add to its cast, bringing on Jennifer Beals and Paula Marshall. The police drama centers on a cop who becomes involved with the families of three of his partners who were killed in the line of duty. Beals and Marshall will play two of the widows. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Lost vet Rebecca Mader is hopping over to Fringe! She'll appear in the final two episodes of the season, playing a woman (OR WOMEN!) who's linked to David Robert Jones. [TV Guide]

... Mader's fellow Lostie Maggie Grace (she played Shannon) has joined Fox's thriller pilot that's from Kevin Williamson and stars Kevin Bacon. Grace will play a doctor who's the lone survivor of an attack by a serial killer. [EW]

... Fox's promising comedy pilot Rebounding has parted ways with Aly Michalka (Hellcats) after readjusting her character following a table read. The new character will be 10 years older, so we can't blame it all on Aly. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Martha Stewart will guest-star on Law & Order: SVU as a private-school headmaster. Look for her in an April episode that also features Arrested Development's Tony Hale. [TV Guide]

... Heroes' Jack Coleman is joining The CW's medical drama pilot First Cut, about a young female doctor trying to escape her geeky high school past only to find that the hospital she now works at isn't much different. Coleman will play the chief of staff. [Deadline Hollywood]

Well it's a good marketing gag as long as they don't push it too far.

Pretending to be trying to save some shows might make people talk about Netflix, but doing it too often without actually saving a show could lead people to realize they're just doing it for publicity. Then it starts to become counterproductive.

The River is way better then Terra Nova, but I would watch them both if saved!

comon save the river! i want to see more!

Why would anyone want to save The River?

Stargate Universe hell no, the show simply sucked, Atlantis hell yes, Firefly hell yes, Terra Nova hell no

I would like to see 3 shows rescued;

1. Stargate Universe or / and Stargate Atlantis

2. Firefly

3. Terra Nova

Anyone with me?

Well, let's see..At least one major star from both Stargate Universe and Firefly have moved on to other projects, ie..Once Upon A Time and Castle, soooooo don't see that happening, and what's to rescue Atlantis? It had a really good run. As for Terra Nova, rescue it from itself. I wanted to really like this show..I watched all the episodes, it just didn't know how to bring on the dinosaurs.

I'd rather Netflix devote it's resources to more Lilyhammer, and other great original programming. I can't imagine wasting money on that boring dinosaur show....uh, what was it called again...

The River is crap...

Widow Detective is starting to sound like a replacement for Murder She Wrote - that is, light murder mystery fare for older women. I love Paula Marshall but she needs a new agent, she hasn't gotten a good regular role since Out of Practice.

Apparently Netflix comes to save the day even before shows are officially canceled now. If only they'd been around to save Firefly back in the day.

No more Brooke Alvarez?!?! Say it isn't so IFC, the Onion News Network was the best fake news program since Daily Show and Colbert. Can you imagine the backlash if either of those shows were canceled?

Some good news and bad news in that lot.

I actually didn't mind Bent, shame it's going to be cancelled before it's fourth episode airs.

It's a shame that The Onion News Network has been cancelled, it was fantastic at times.

Random thought - Jennifer Beals annoys me!

Great to see Rebecca Mader coming back and even better that it's on Fringe.

So this Kevin Williamson 'Serial Killer' project now has Maggie Grace & Natalie Zea, excellent casting choices! I will definately be watching this.

Jack Coleman!!! As a regular in a TV show! Finally!!! :D I need my weekly dose of Jack Coleman!

I suspect Netflix's idea of "saving" a show is to run the repeats on Netflix.

I guess that's it for The Onion. They can continue online, but after being on TV is it really worth it?

So HIMYM and 2 Broke Girls will get a 2 back to back episode season finale (so happy for the two shows they are amazing), oh and TBBT as well.

Widow Detective sounds more and more like Big Love to me :D And three partners killed in the line of duty? Time to ask if he is doing something wrong. But I am going to check it out when it airs - how can you not with such a title?

Jack Coleman was the best thing in Heroes. My love of Kevin Bacon and Lost alumni have got me watching whatever that show is going to be called. And my love of looking at Aly Michalka is going to keep me away from Rebounding. Oh yeah, and Whitney Houston is a hellofa drug.

It would be nice if someone tried to save Blood and Chrome. The trailer at WonderCon was amazing and it's a pity that Syfy always makes the wrong decision on pulling the plug on show.

The River before Terra Nova, plz. And ff they do it, fine, but I'm getting tired of hearing them talk about saving shows. They sound like Trump when he says he's thinking about running for president.

(He's not going to run for president. Ever. And not even after that.)

1. Netflix is definitely not impressing me by constantly being the first to say they're thinking of saving [insert name of show that doesn't deserve to be saved here]. (Note that that disappointment does not extend to the great "Arrested Development.")

2. The proposed cast of "The Widow Detective" sounds better and better with each update. Too bad the premise sounds fairly silly.

3. Hooray for Mader guest starring on "Fringe." It'll take away some of the sour taste that her role (and everyone else's) on "Work It" left in the mouths of the few of us that watched it.

4. Boo to the demise of The Onion's *second* amazingly well produced TV show. I expected Comedy Central to kill the first one after only one season. CC is notorious for quick deaths. But I was hoping IFC would give ONN at least one more season. I'm really going to miss those segments from the autistic reporter. Hilarious stuff. Oh well, at least their great video clips still exist at The Onion's website.

Maybe they really want to try and save this, and thus save face, for trying to save the unsaveable Terra Nova.

good. the river is a great show. however, terra nova is so jacked up it cant be saved

Who cares about The River?

Stargate Universe is still waiting to be rescued, Netflix.

First, they, or someone, has to rescue Robert Carlyle from Once Upon a Time.

Rescue?! He plays a diabolical imp with crazy-awesome magical powers. I think he's doing just fine on OUaT.

A serial killer is someone who kills people - usually individually - over a period of time. To be the "lone survivor" of a serial killer, wouldn't that mean that he has killed everyone else in the world?

Maybe you meant mass murderer....
Reply

Define 'world'. If it means a spate of attacks, then one individual surviving out of similar instances in one man's world (not to be un-PC, but he is a man) then it is not wrong at all. Or it could refer to all of the people he's attacked/killed, and only one survived.

Unless, of couse, you interpret "lone surivivor" as "lone surviving victim", as pretty much everyone else did when they read this.

Perhaps a representation in list form will help:

Killed

Killed

Killed

Scared the heck out of but didn't kill

Killed

Killed

Can you see which one of these is the "lone survivor"?

as doc said she was the only one to survive his attack....simples

I've already been missing Person of Interest like crazy for the past two weeks while CBS has been airing the basketball playoffs(?). It's going to be tough waiting an entire summer for season two!

I'm willing to give First Cut a shot since Jack Coleman will be in it.

Great news about Rebecca Mader. I loved her on Lost and she's hot too. Maybe netflix will save Fringe if it gets canceled. I would subscribe again if they did something like that.

Screw The River. Bring back Firefly.

If you don't mind it not having the characters played by actors contracted to different shows, sure...

Have NETFLIX ever actually saved anything? They seem to be all talk and NO ACTION
