News Briefs: New Girl Will Be Gone 'Til November

IMPORTANT NEWS... ON A SLOW NEWS DAY

... One of the season's biggest new hits is being rewarded with an unplanned hiatus. Fox has shelved New Girl until November 1 due to scheduling conflicts with Major League Baseball playoffs. The Zooey Deschanel-starring sitcom usually airs on Tuesdays, but also had special episodes planned for post-The X Factor airings on a few upcoming Wednesdays. Now the show will be postponed altogether, and The X Factor will expand to two hours. If you're still looking for an adorkable fix, I recommend keeping an eye on the Milwaukee Brewers' Prince Fielder. What a huggable little fella! [The Futon Critic]

... Remember when Netflix pissed everyone off by splitting its DVD delivery and video-streaming services into two companies, Netflix and a new one named Qwikster? Turns out the company was totally just kidding! [Deadline Hollywood]

... This Sunday, Discovery will air a new documentary celebrating former Apple CEO Steve Jobs' life, and it will be hosted by Mythbusters' Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman. The special program is called iGenius: How Steve Jobs Changed the World and hopefully won't focus on people adding an "I" to everything in an attempt to sound cool. [EW]

... NBC has bought Roseanne Barr's new sitcom Downwardly Mobile, about a family who lives in a mobile home park and their friends. This means the network could end up the home of comedies starring Barr, Snoop Dogg, and Dane Cook. Maybe it's hoping to become a VH1 spin-off channel? [Deadline Hollywood]

... ABC had a horrible Sunday: Desperate Housewives tied its own series low with a 2.7 rating among adults, and Pan Am nosedived toward cancellation with a 1.9 rating. Put your tray tables up and start making out with the girl sitting next to you, because this thing is about to crash. [TV By the Numbers]

CASTING NEWS... ON A SLOW NEWS DAY

... Game of Thrones has cast Ygritte, a Wildling lady who's going to make a lot of female viewers jealous when she hangs around Jon Snow A LOT. Downton Abbey actress Rose Leslie got the job. [EW]

... Buffy the Vampire Slayer vet Emma Caulfield is joining ABC's Once Upon a Time for a guest role as the Blind Witch from "Hansel and Gretel." She joins an extensive list of impressive guest actors. Does this show think it's Chuck or something? [TV Line]

... ABC's Apartment 23 features James Van Der Beek playing himself, so why shouldn't a few more '90s icons join him? Kevin Sorbo (Hercules) and Dean Cain (Lois & Clark) will guest-star as themselves sometime in Season 1. Apartment 23 debuts this midseason. [EW]

... Steve Urkel will host a new gameshow on Syfy called Total Blackout. It's like Dating in the Dark, but with no groping. [Accidental Sexiness]

    NOOOOOOO!!!! i want New Girl!!! ... TT_TT

  • chas031

C'mon Fox there's gotta some MORE baseball playing somewhere out there!!

  • DavidJackson8

Kevin Sorbo AND Dean Cain? *swoons*

  • headclub

Jon Snow knows nothing---and soon he's gonna find that out! (btw, you either get that or you don't!)

  • Final_One

For those that think "Total blackout" is a datingshow; you really should read a little better and make a bit more research. It's a GAMESHOW, not a datingshow. From someone that lives in a country where it is already airing I can say it's pretty entertaining too.

  • Crazy-for-TV

Fox is doing the same thing with Raising Hope. It won't be back until November. : (

why FOX why i wanted to see this episode to be sure if im going to watch the whole season now i have to wait til november to decide. I hate it when they do this.

  • AshleyKoontz

Ya know, Pan Am was showing on a Holiday Weekend. Not fair to hold that against it.

  • Kodash89

I really enjoy New Girl, seems to always make me chuckle....will just have to be miserable.for.a.month

  • Writerpatrick

Pan AM will probably last 13 episodes. It's dropping but it's still getting enough of an audience to keep it around. (And Sunday at 10pm isn't the easiest slot to program.) But I knew it didn't have a chance simply because there's never been a successful TV series about the airline industry.

I like Pan Am but it's being too slow. It's not a serious drama but there really isn't any comedy either. It's just kind of blah. I hope it gets a full season though. I wonder if Brothers and Sisters would have been doing better in that time slot...

  • chas031

"NBC has bought Roseanne Barr's new sitcom Downwardly Mobile"
and the promo reads "Next, on the downwardly mobile network...Downwardly Mobile"
and a DATING show on Syfy!! Man, I'm starting to look forward to their Quantum Kitchen Leap!!

  • angeland8

I just hope they will use all this time to make New girl actually funny.

  • NeeUyank

so is this new girl postponance is effective as of tomorrow? and I will be very disappointed if Pan-Am gets cancelled..

  • Taccado

Thanks a lot Tim. I started making out with the girl sitting next to me in my university library, and judging by the sore left cheek and scratch marks on my forehead, I can tell you she really didn't appreciate it. Great advice, geez. If she sues for sexual assault, I'm blaming TV.com. Think twice next time you're about to give advice like that.

  • Taccado

Not really a surprise if Pan Am gets cancelled. It's a decent show, I enjoy it, but maybe the audience wasn't ready for it. On the up side I really have to give the show credit for the wardrobe and cinematography. In my mind the 60's feel the show has created is very good. Maybe a little glossy, but still very good. Definitely at par with Mad Men.

  • torque_smacky

Wait......do you just mean it's hosted by Jaleel White, or that it's actually Urkel? Because if SyFy is putting on a DATING SHOW HOSTED BY URKEL, it may be the greatest idea of the decade.

  • jaden84

OMG Syfy are you serious? First a cooking show, now a dating show? Are you serious? Every executive there should be let go because the decisions they have made lately (mainly SGU and Eureka be canceled) won't be tolerated by the fans of the channel anymore....Just saw the pic of Rose Leslie, got to say HBO has nailed it right on the head with this casting.

  • DraicKin5

Oh no! I hate my teenage daughter is scheduled right after X-Factor (beginning nov.30th) , what would happen to this poor show if X-Factor stays 2 hours. :(

    hahahahahahahaha!

  • Geek_Queen

Oh, Netflix, I love you, but please stop acting crazy. ... I hope Pan Am doesn't get canceled! I'm really enjoying the ride, so far. ... A dating show on Syfy?! WTF? Seriously, Syfy, you need to stop smoking that wacky-backy and remember you are supposed to be a sci-fi channel.

  • hockeyrick

How will we live without the crazy, nutty Z? She is just so cute and perky I want to throw my guts up!
This show is soooooo mundane and not that original and funny. Get over it!
Give me maggieQ any day of the week!

  • Acrobit

As I say whenever I watch New Girl: ...

But I won't lie. The last episode was pretty funny.

  • Sbriseno07

Poor Housewives...I guess it is better that they got cancelled this season rather than trying for another season and failing even harder.

  • Tom3345

I think Pan Am might last for a while. Charlie's Angels will probably be canceled first.

It's too bad the ratings are low, though. It's not perfect, but it's definitely my favourite new network drama of the season. Last night's episode was especially good.

I agree. Pan Am is a fun new series that deserves a chance to spread its wings and soar.

I wonder if a timeslot change might help the ratings improve? I'd try moving Pan Am to 8 pm, to see if that drew more viewers. Nine pm would be tricky, since The Good Wife is on then (when football doesn't mess with the schedule).

  • mwatzz

really syfy!! is this why u cancelled SGU!! as if the coking show was not bad enough. what are they going to do next.. wrestling? oh wait, thats there already!
