News Briefs: Pilot Casting Means Abby Elliott May Leave SNL

LOTS OF CASTING NEWS BECAUSE ITS PILOT SEASON

... Saturday Night Live cast member and spawn of the one of the funniest men ever Abby Elliott has landed the lead role in the Fox pilot Ben Fox Is My Manny. Elliott will play a single mom who gets help raising her kid from her slacker brother. If the pilot gets ordered to series, Elliott will likely leave her post at Saturday Night Live due to the conflict. SNL has always been a temporary gig for comedians looking for something more, so this is hardly a surprise. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Greg Grunberg (Heroes) has been cast in CBS's untitled comedy pilot from Greg Berlanti. The show follows a man and his female best friend, and the two are business partners. But when he realizes that she is "the one" for him, things get complicated and he has to break the news to her, all while she's engaged to one of his friends. Soooo... gender-reversed My Best Friend's Wedding? Grunberg will play the brother of the woman. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Mena Suvari (The Cape hee hee) and Kyle Howard (My Boys) will star in NBC's untitled comedy about a shy woman who gets dumped and plots revenge on her ex. Suvari and Howard will play co-workers of the woman. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Anything Michael Raymond-James gets cast in automatically gets bumped up on my list of things to watch, so it sounds like I'll be tuning in for NBC's mystery pilot Midnight Sun. The show follows a team that searches for a cult-like group that vanishes in the Arctic, and already stars Titus Welliver as the leader of the group. Raymond-James, who has appeared on Terriers, True Blood, and most recently The Walking Dead, will play a member of the search group. [Digital Spy]

... Scrubs' Judy Reyes and Without a Trace's Roselyn Sanchez round out the four maids at the forefront of Marc Cherry's ABC pilot Devious Maids. The primetime soap centers on Hispanic maids in Beverly Hills looking to make it as big as their clients. Reyes and Sanchez join Ana Ortiz and Dania Ramirez as the leads. [Deadline Hollywood / Deadline Hollywood]

... The CW has made some casting noise by landing Prison Break's Robert Knepper and Friday Night Lights' Aimee Teegarden. Knepper will join Cult, about a television show that spawns copycat murders. Teegarden will lead The Selection, a love story set 300 years in the future. There's still love in 300 years? [Deadline Hollywood]

... Jonah Hill will host Saturday Night Live on March 10. Yawn. [NBC via press release]

... Bradley Whitford (Studio 30 on the Sunset Strip) will co-lead Fox's drama The Asset alongside Ali Larter. Tough gig, Bradley! The thriller follows a CIA agent (Larter); Whitfield will play her boss. [Deadline Hollywood]

I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S NOT CASTING NEWS NEWS

... TLC has ordered the series Extreme Cheapskates, which features savvy shoppers and dumpster divers who let others pay for meals and don't tip. [TLC via press release]

I hope Midnight Sun is a success. Michael Raymond-James is a great actor. I'm still mad that Terriers was cancelled.

Abby Elliot is probably the least funny cast member on SNL anyway.

Ugh, Abby Elliot as a mom is about as believable as my foot becoming King of England. She can be funny, but like her dad she doesn't know when to rein in the broad strokes. She could do better with a show better aimed at her style - look at Casey Wilson on Happy Endings, for example. In fact, Abby Elliot would be better served by playing second-banana on a show.

"NBC's untitled comedy about a shy woman who gets dumped and plots revenge on her ex."

How is this an entire series? Will she do something different to him every week for nine seasons? Talk about petty!

Good News for Abby Elliott for having her own show,, but the concept of the new show its a bit overdone.. Isn't it similar to the New Adventures of old Christine?

I think TLC should combine two shows (or possibly more, I don't often watch their line-up) and make "I didn't know I was dating an extreme cheapskate and got pregnant" That I might watch. Maybe they have toilet babies there because the guy is too cheap to take her to the hospital.

Was there a Studio 30 spin off to Studio 60 that I didn't know about?

The new cast from SNL is not good anyhow. Cya Abby!

Midnight Sun sounds fun and mysterious. I'm also a big fan of Michael Raymond-James.

The Selection sounds good, but time will only tell.

on on hand, good for Abby.. on the other, that show will probably suck.. and on a third mysteriously newly grown hand, she's probably the best person on SNL other than Kristin Wiig so that'll suck

Cult sounds like a stupid show that should be a movie, not a tv show with no end.. i like Kyle Howard but he needs his own show. My Boys screwed up his previous NBC show last year

*Snif* Every time I read a mention of Terriers, I get teary-eyed remembering just how much I loved that show.

Michael Raymond-James is great. Titus Welliver is pretty darn cool too, so I'll definitely be tuning in to Midnight Sun.

True, true. Many cancellations during the last ten years have felt like a slight disappointment. But the fate of Terriers was one of the few that felt like a true injustice and hurt pretty bad. So much potential wasted...

Good, Abbey Elliot should be on something funny.

Bradley Whitford I wouldn't work with Fox if I was him. They already had him in one of the best characters to ever have been on tv in Detective Dan Stark on The Good Guys. His portrayal of Stark was absolutely genius and the show was damn good and those morons at Fox pulled it along with Human Target. A holes.
