News Briefs: Science Announces a Firefly Reunion Special

BUSINESS TIME

... And we thought we were excited for Comic-Con's Firefly 10-year anniversary panel. The Science channel has announced that the panel is just the beginning. On November 11, the network will air Browncoats Unite, an hour-long special starring Joss Whedon, Nathan Fillion, Summer Glau, and more to address the phenomenon that was Firefly—and that's after the network runs a full-on marathon of the series! Mark your calendars, kids: 11.11.12 is Firefly remembrance day. [Science via press release]

... Starz's Spartacus producers are working on two new original series. The first, Incursion, is a sci-fi action thriller about a team of soldiers who are engaged in a dark, gritty battle with an alien race. Each season will take place on a new, exotic planet. How's that for an enticing gimmick? The second, Vlad Dracula, is a retelling of the classic Dracula story that will attempt to blend the fictional tale with historical facts about the 15th-century Prince of Wallachia. Historical fiction? Count me in! [Starz via press release]

... truTV has decided to shine the green light on a new series starring Shaquille O'Neal. It's currently titled Upload with Shaquille O'Neal, and the network has ordered 10 episodes. The series is about Shaq and his comedian buddies (Gary Owen and Godfrey) as they scour the internet looking for hilarious videos to discuss. Topical. [via press release from truTV]

...The Legend of Korra will see the light of a second season, says Nickelodeon. The network has officially picked up the animated series for a second round after phenomenal ratings in Season 1. There will be 26 episodes, which will reportedly be broken into two 13-episode segments. You go, Korra! [EW]

...NBC is shacking up with Facebook to promote the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. The network will be decking out its NBC Olympics Facebook page to display timely news, polls, trivia, photo galleries, and more. If the Olympics weren't social before, they're certainly trying to be now. [Deadline Hollywood]

CASTING NEWS

... Mindy Kaling's upcoming new Fox comedy, The Mindy Project has a couple of new names to add to its cast list. Up first, Gossip Girl's Amanda Setton, who will play an obstinate office manager from Jersey. Glee's Stephen Tobolowsky will play the director of Mindy's practice, Dr. Marc Shulman. And finally, MADtv's Ike Barinholtz has nabbed the recurring role of Morgan Tookers, a male nurse who also happens to be an ex-con. Sounds like a blast already! [EW]

... Michael Weatherly, Pauley Perrette, and Sean Murray will all return for NCIS's tenth season. All three actors' contracts were up at the end of Season 9, and while we weren't necessarily expecting them to walk, we're glad to hear the family is still intact. [Deadline Hollywood]

Great news for Firefly.
I don't think that in our world today Vlad Dracula would be such a good idea since the original Vlad Tepec fought and impaled Turks and was the epitome of anti-Muslim xenophobia.

Firefly reunion will be amazing! Every time I watch an episode on DVD I think "why aren't there more episodes of this show?" or "13 episodes is not enough!!!"

Looking forward to checking out that Firefly reunion! And now that Legend of Korra will have more eps, maybe they can give us some character growth and improved writing! I'll give it another chance:-)

little too late for a Firefly Reunion or reboot

So is it true If the reunion does good, Science and Whedon are actually rebooting the show? with the original cast?

Doubtful, three of the actors off the top of my head have solid current TV roles.

My wife loves Rick Castle but found Malcolm Reynolds a bit hard to take and didn't like him but gave it a second chance. After the second episode she says she wants more and I think she might get it now so I have to watch it all over again. Poor, poor, pitiful me ;)

Sounds good, as long as they don't kill anyone else. I don't mind someone getting put in the infirmary, as long as they walk away.

Firefly, Firefly, Firefly. some other new shows seem cool... well, incursion does anyway

Hurray to more Firefly and Legend of Korra! When I read the blurb on Incursion, it first felt like it was going to be a standard formula which we would have to see grow into something original, and then I read "each season will take place on a new, exotic planet". That sounds so cool, I said it out loud. I am willing to bet no one has said "cool" since the nineties.

Both of Starz shows in development sound good but I don't see how they could afford to do something like Incursion properly.

Why is Firefly on the Science channel? No one else wanted it? Science had more money to pay for the rights?

Vlad Dracula also involves Babylon 5's J.M. Straczynski. Despite some stumbles in his comic work of late, this might be interesting.

Great news to hear that Micheal Weatherly (DiNozzo), Pauley Perrett (Abby), and Sean Murray (McGee) will be back for Season 10 of NCIS. It wouldn't be NCIS without them.

Great news about The Legend of Korra. It's a great continuation of the Avatar universe (not the crappy blue cat people one).

NBC might want to rebrand the Summer Olympics because at the moment it's more like Autumn over here with no end in sight..........

One can only hope that someone at Netflix is frantically making calls at this moment in time.

Everything positive thing said about the Goddess Herself, Miss Summer Lyn Glau, is not and will never be good enough. Watching her watch paint dry would be a pleasure. My love is Summer forever.

I would write something more meaningful, but I'm too distracted by Summer Glau's, Gina Torres' and Jewel Staite's legs. Stunning!

I met Jewel Staite the other day in London. And having seen them in person now, I am inclined to agree.....

forget a Firefly movie, how about a new Firefly season? I heard that Whedon has rights to FF again. Are they just teasing a season 2? I hope not.

I'm excited about the Firefly reunion special, but hope it includes more cast members than just Joss, Nathan, and Summer.

Both new Starz programs sound interesting and I'll be checking them out.

How about a new Firefly movie. Come on Joss, you know you probably have instant green light privileges after The Avengers.

The Alien thing sounds all right. It will be interesting to see how that turns out. And sign me up for a vampire show that isn't about teenagers or oversexed under storied vampires. Give me some old school Vlad the Impaler with lots of gore and death. If that is done in the way Spartacus was done, it could be really great. Ps, I miss Spartacus.

Dr. Shaq is pretty funny, if you try to not remember any of his movies.

MIndy Kailing's show still sounds awful, which should follow right along after New Girl. Fox can call it the Craptastic hour of something resembling comedy. However, Mindy is actually funny, so maybe she will be able to pull it off.

So November 11th is my birthday... Best present ever! Firefly is awesome

Yay, Firefly.

And man, those new Starz series sound amazing, especially Incursion, you didn't even mention that the Spartacus Producer working on Incursion also worked on Buffy, Angel, and Dollhouse... I really hope it won't set the first season on earth, and then get canceled.
