News Briefs: Summer Glau Joins TNT's Dog-Cop Drama

BIG NEWS

... Summer Glau! Summer Glau! Summer Glau! The sci-fi It Girl from Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Firefly, Dollhouse, The Unit, and The 4400 has found a new regular gig, this time on TNT. Glau has signed on for Scent of the Missing, a drama about a K-9 Search and Rescue squad, as a new team member who's sexy and rich. She joins previously announced lead Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica) in the cast, making it TV's hottest team of sci-fi starlets on a show about police pooches. Elsewhere, Niecy Nash has landed the female lead in Cedric the Entertainer's Hot in Cleveland spin-off, but let's face it, you came here to read about Ms. Glau. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Fox has canceled In the Flow With Affion Crockett. It was a sketch comedy show produced by Jamie Foxx that people insist actually existed, but I still don't believe them. [Deadline Hollywood]

... TLC has renewed Long Island Medium for a second season, so it is apparently a real show. My Quija board says it follows Theresa Caputo as she nags the undead into speaking with their relatives and loved ones. [EW]

... I get to control this news up in this piece, so if there's a semi-interesting bit of info to share about a show I happen to like, then you better believe you'll know about it. And because I really, really like Showtime's new series Homeland, I thought you should know that it hit a series-high in ratings during its fifth episode with 1.8 million viewers. That means it's good. [EW]

... ABC will launch its new game show You Deserve It on November 21 after Dancing With the Stars. The program, hosted by The Bachelor's Chris Harrison, has contestants play to win money for someone else while cameras keep tabs on the unknowing beneficiary. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Good-show premiere-date alert! HBO will debut Luck right after the season finale of Boardwalk Empire on December 11. Luck centers on the world of horse-racing and was created by David Milch and Michael Mann. It stars Rain Man, Nick Nolte, and Dennis Farina. In other words, there is NO way it won't be good! [Variety]

... NBC has scheduled a holiday-time game show called Who's Still Standing to air daily from December 19-22. Hosted by Cash Cab's Ben Bailey, the "family friendly" competition revolves around trivia. It will settle into its regular Monday slot December 26. [Deadline Hollywood]

... NBC's Rock Center with Brian Williams stunk up the ratings last night, just like everyone thought it would. 4.1 million people watched, good enough for a 1.0 rating. Also, everyone is unfairly pointing out that the show's numbers were lower than those of The Playboy Club. Of course it was going to do worse than The Playboy Club! [Deadline Hollywood]

CASTING NEWS

... Michelle Trachtenberg is returning to Gossip Girl for the teen soap's 100th episode. Trachtenberg's Georgina will return for a major arc that will see her being a major bitch. [TV Line]

... Jerry Seinfeld will be the first guest co-host of Live! With Kelly following the departure of Regis Philbin. The Reeg departs on November 18, so Jerry will sit next to Kelly Ripa starting November 21 and continuing through the 23rd. [LA Times]

HOT GIRLS WHO ARE NOW SINGLE NEWS

... New Girl star Zooey Deschanel has split with her husband Ben Gibbard (who's happens to be the frontman for that band you used to like until you caught your mom humming one of their songs). [US Magazine]

poor summer never seems to hold a job.

Um why does IMDB say that Tricia is set to star in a tv series version of John Grisham's The Firm that starts in 2012 and not mention Scent. And Summer's iMBD just listed Alphas guest star along with another guest star and a movie?

I love me some Summer Glau and Zooey Deschanel

Summer Glau was in Dollhouse?!

She was a tech geek and a love interest for the main tech geek...briefly.

I see the "Summer Glau gets shows canceled" jokes have already started, LOL. Niecy Nash and Cedric in a sitcom together that going to be nuts. :) So sad for Zooey. :(

Unfortunately, tv.com has not yet switched on the idiots spam filter.

Lucky for us idiots. If the day ever comes when they decide to turn on the filter, me along with 90% of registered users will be denied access to this site.

Long live idiocy! Let us idiots reign this site forever.

@ Acrobit I'm just trying to open your eyes on the tricks used by M. Tim Surette since he cannot directly make fun of Summer Glau; just like when he stripped her first name, for no apparent reason, in this article http://www.tv.com/news/alphas-chases-and-more-chases-26547/: honest readers mentioned it but the fools and the sheeps are still numerous at tv.com.

But this is too late, i have already instilled doubt in tv.com readers minds about M. Tim Surette despicable and swinging methods.
Reply
Flag
That only makes me respect tv.com less if a writer can't criticize someone because a bunch of fanboys can't take it.

Get this: I do not care why Tim has reported the information that Summer Glau is on a new show that doesn't sound like it will be good. I would not care if he reported it on a house. I would not care if he reported it next to a mouse.

It was news, just as it was news when Tricia was cast. Someone had to report it, and it happened to be Tim. Not everyone who comes to the site knows who Summer Glau is. If you're bothered by the list of shows in which she starred, maybe you should take it up with her for acting in shows that don't last very long. Maybe you should take it up with the rest of America who didn't watch the shows enough to boost their ratings.
Flag
What you've not understood is that tv.com headstaff has ordered M. Tim Surette to stop making blatantly offending jokes about Summer Glau so he tries unsuccesfully to be more subtile now by listing the show she appeared on, hoping that idiots and sheep-like commenters will do the dirty job for him.

In that he's successful but that makes you the idiots and the sheep.

@ lalaforever M. Tim Surette can make fun of SG, say that she's a bad actress or ugly as long as he wants, i don't care. The important word of my comment was "ofending" and he crossed the line a few weeks ago.

Charly Sheen IS crazy but only weak minds and sheeps believe in curses.
Flag
So you're complaining that a tv.com writer can no long excessively make fun of her. So they then are not allowed to ever bring up that alot of the shows she on is cancelled? So what if he brings it up. We aren't idiots.... we do watch tv after all hence the website. What are you complaining about exactly? If a tv.com wrote an article about Charlie Sheen's latest tv show could he not mention his crazyness in the latest gossip website headlines? Would that offend you too?
Flag
OH MY GOD! Your right, of course! There is a labyrinthine conspiracy by the evil headstaff of TV.com to muzzle Tim Surette into Summer Glau fanboy placation. But, Tim is too clever for them. I now see how he subtly lists shows she's appeared on, with the master plan of getting the idiots and sheep to do his insulting for him. Dastardly bastard! How could I be so blind!?
Flag
Then Tim's master plan will bear a little more fruit right here, because she's not all that. One person's 10 (and a fanboy's 11) is another person's meh.

I never would've had a critical thing to say about Summer Glau had it not been for Tim's dastardly plan of listing shows in which I'd already seen her, riling me into a mindless frenzy of bleating the word 'meh' in her direction. I was truly fortunate that Tim didn't crank his black-and-white swirly mind control text to full power and mention The Cape.

I'd simply thought it was an inevitable consequence of bringing up casting news about someone who isn't worshipped by 100% of the user base.

Me-eh-eh. There it goes again. Curse you, He-Man--er, Tim.

Can I just clarify, 1.8 million viewers is considered a success for Homeland. I think Terra Nova gets considerably higher viewing figures than that but people think it's too low.

Don't understand.

Basically, from what I have seen with ratings, if networks shows get at least 10 million overall viewers, it's a raging success. If basic cable gets 5 million, it too is a success. Not that much to go on with pay cable, but my guess would be 2 to 2.5 million would make that a success, so 1.8 is quite good. Yes, ratings benchmarks seem to get halved with each service.
Reply
Flag
One is on network TV, the other is on cable. When on network TV you are required to get way higher viewership.
Reply
Flag
Terra Nova is on a broadcast channel (Fox)

Homeland is on Showtime, which isn't even basic cable

Most people don't pay a bunch of money for Showtime, so it will always have lower ratings than the broadcast shows.

Awesome news about Homeland. Glad it's doing well, the show is brilliant.

After reading the news about Summer, I expected myself to post something about her. But then I read the news about Zooey, and now I'm all like "Summer who?"

Zooeeeyyy marry me. Or, you know, at least look in my direction when I follow you around -_-

Lol at all the comments from haters.

M. Tim Surette still tries to snarl but Summer Glau fans pressure and resulting pressure from his superiors have turned him into a poodle dog when talking about Summer Glau.

Another show with Summer Glau! Also you forgot about the... The Cape!

Summer Glau, with the Alpha ability to get shows cancelled (although Alpha's survived). I've said it before and I'll say it again, "she is the best thing about all the show's she's been in". Hopefully, with Tricia Helfer, the show will have a big enough (probably male) following to survive. One thing I do know - I'll be watching.

Luck sounds like it has a fantastic cast, which is exactly what a show about horse racing would need to survive. I'll be watching that too.

"she is the best thing about all the show's she's been in"

Then why are you recycling a joke M. Tim Surette made a few weeks ago while admitting yourself it'sa stupid and unfouded one.

Don't let M. Tim Surette manipulate you.

Summer in another TV show? Well, you can't blame the girl for trying. Maybe this time Tricia Helfer, cute dogs and her will be a winning combo for longevity.

Wait, what? It's a show about searching people with dogs? Can you imagine a story like that going on for more than one season? I can't. Sorry Summer that I don't have more faith in your projects. You are still more than welcome to be my wife. That's a future project for you that I have 100% faith in.

Zooey Deschanel has split? Sorry for the second time, Summer. You just became my future ex-wife prematurely. Unless you're into bigamy. Zooey will you marry me?

They did manage to make a show about some people trying to escape a prison last 2 or 3 full seasons didn't they. And a show about 1 single day last for 5 or 6 seasons (each season being a day and each episode being one hour)... If there was an award for the most boring concepts those would sure won it.
Reply
Flag
Those might have been boring intial concepts but the shows were actually pretty good. It's all about the writing and execution, not necessarily concept.

too bad for Affion Crockett he was great and will be missed ,

black comdey on fox is expected to be cancelled no matter how great it is

they should have reached to comedy central or BET
Reply

Tim, you didn't even mention Summer's appearance on Alphas, as an Alpha who could make any device she wanted to, literally, and who also has a young daughter who can encrypt any cipher. Now that was definitely sci-fi there. It's hard to believe she's 30 already! She only looks 23-24.

Summer Glau is tv cursed but I love her!

With Zooey Deschanel now single, all I have to do is get Mandy Moore to dump her once cool, now lame rocker husband and I've got two wives and my very own show on TLC.

yes Summer back she is awesome along with Tricia should be an interesting show Scent of the Missing definitely deserves a look, also bring back Michelle Trachtenberg as Georgina and giving here a major arc is good news
Reply
Flag
Ah Summer, no, why? I would rather see you in a western next than a dog cop show. Hope it works out though.
Reply
Flag
In the Flow With Affion Crockett actually did exist. I saw two episodes and gave up on it. It wasn't a funny show and it's not surprising Fox canned it.

I don't understand the appeal of Summer Glau. I've seen her on Firefly, Dollhouse, a lifetime movie about her being a newlywed on a yacht, and a bit on 4400. I don't get it at all.
Reply
Flag
She doesn't sell me on a show any more than Tricia does. I'll try it because it's there, but I don't have high hopes for it. I'd love for it to surprise me, but that's one of the reasons I watch anything.

As far as sci-fi appeal, Lucy Lawless brings me to the table faster than either. She's just badass, and I hated Xena.

I've heard women say the same thing about Zooey Deschanel. I think you might need Y chromosomes to understand.
Reply
Flag
I bat for your team (if you catch my drift) and I don't get it either. Oh well all our private parts tell us different things!
Reply
Flag
That's funny because I actually feel the same way about Zooey Deschanel, but I love her sister Emily!
Reply
Flag
their is nothing wrong with Zooey she rock it in Tin Man, and well Summer just plain rock everything she does
Reply
Flag
For me she's sort of middle of the road. Not ugly, but not hot. Not a bad actress, but not great. She seems to have the same personality in all her roles although the end of The Cape seemed to promise something more to her character there.

^ what Daffy said.

Despite my name being a female name, I am in fact a guy. And I WILL marry Zooey now!!!

I second this... "Summer Glau! Summer Glau! Summer Glau!" Woo-Hoo! But why did this glimmer of hope have to continue on with news that she "Joins TNT's Dog-Cop Drama". And for that matter why are the words "Dog, Cop and Drama" even allowed to be part of the same sentence? Unless someone is using those words to explain the premise of some zany new reality show. (Which I would totally watch). Excited to see Summer Glau back on my TV!

It's a weird premise for sure. Hot chicks with dogs. Ooh that reminds me. I need to buy the URL HotChicksWithDogs.com

sad about Zooey and Ben.. cool about Michelle Trachtenberg, but it was obvious she'd be back at some point.. the rest, especially the stupid cop dog show and Hot In Cleveland spinoff, don't interest me at all

Now my dream of marrying Zooey Deschanel is closer to becoming a reality.

Well, any potential Scent of the Missing might have had will be completely ruined by that no-talent hack, Summer Glau. Lose the broad and maybe it'll have a future.
Reply

Dude, it's not smart to piss off Summer Glau fans. We're crazy.
Reply
Flag
I second that!
Reply
Flag
Who said I was trying piss of Glau fans? I'm just stating facts. She can't act. She's a curse to everything she touches. All she's good for is standing around, giving guys boners. And there are plenty of hot actresses out who can do that and actually have gravitas and talent to back their beauty up. Sadly, Glau is not one of them.

OMG how could you say such a thing about such an amazing creature. The Earth is here because of her, you know.
Reply

Now you've gone and done it. I wouldn't go near any science fiction conventions if I were you. Summer Glau fans are everywhere.

agreed, not smart at all

Tricia Helfer and Summer Glau. The curses that follow the shows that those two appear in are crazy. I expect that show to last less than three episodes.
Reply
Flag
Wait I know about the Summer curse, I think she has been on almost every basic cable channel, thank God she isn't going back to FOX. But as far as I know nothing went wrong with Tricia. Battlestar made it to the end on the sci fi channel which has a history of cancelling EVERY one of their shows. Then she was recurring on Burn Notice, and she did a bunch of other guest starring on other shows, a few movies, video game and animated voices. And if you IMDB her it says she is set to star in a tv series of The Firm due out next year and says nothing about this show
Reply
Flag
HAHA agreed! Doesn't help that the show is based on "The Nose", A super human who is a giant Nose with the super power to sniff out crime! I think it might have been a Charlie Day idea in the earlier Sunny seasons.
Reply

Tricia Helfer AND Summer Glau! I no longer have a choice. I MUST watch Scent of the Missing.
