News Briefs: Syfy Is Developing a Swashbuckling Space Opera

BUSINESS TIME

... Syfy is developing a new drama called Clandestine. The show is described as a swashbuckling space adventure following mercenaries who pretend to be part of an intergalactic fleet. Yeah, it's kind of a slow news day. [Deadline Hollywood]

... The BBC's Luther might get a spin-off. Creator Neil Cross wants to make a miniseries following weirdo psychopath Alice. The idea would be to make it a miniseries, and you know what that means... EMMY NOMINATIONS! [Variety]

... Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte is doing what all Olympic athletes do after their four years of hard work are over: fielding calls for reality shows! In addition to rumors that he might make a turn on Dancing With the Stars, his agent says two reality shows have been pitched to him so that he can stay in the douchebag spotlight. [THR]

... NBC has purchased the project Pariah from Kelsey Grammer's Gramnet Productions. The drama is a police procedural featuring a man who takes over a San Diego police task force and uses Freakonomics-style methods—unorthodox procedures inspired by the book of the same name—to reduce crime. Yep, sounds like NBC to me! [Deadline Hollywood]

CASTING NEWS

... ABC's Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 is taking this actors-playing-themselves thing to the maxxx. The comedy recently hired Busy Philipps to play herself, and has now recruited Saved By the Bell's (or Franklin or Bash, not sure which) Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Malcolm in the Middle's Frankie Muniz to play themselves in a Season 2 episode. [EW]

... 24's Shohreh Aghdashloo (she played Dina Araz) has signed up for Fox's upcoming The Mob Doctor, the gangster medical drama starring Jordana Spiro as a surgeon who moonlights for the mafia. In a recurring role, Aghdashloo will play a... doctor! [EW]

... Jay Mohr has landed a paycheck on the TV Land pilot Brothers-In-Law. He'll play a man who is forced to hang out with the husband of his girlfriend's sister, and wouldn't you know it, they are like totally different. What a truly odd couple! [Deadline Hollywood]

... Funny lady Rachael Harris (The Hangover) will guest-star on funny TV show Happy Endings. She'll play a real estate agent who looks for a house for Alex and Dave. How has Harris not been on this show already? [TV Line]

... Fox's Touch has booked a Lost actor! And that actor is... Said Taghmaoui! In Lost, he played Caesar, who, uhhhh... was very integral to Season 6 because he... ummm... what did he do again? Anyway, look for him in the miraculously ordered second season of Touch this fall. [THR]

Clandestine Sounds a lot like another great show which was cancelled, so I wonder what the point of all this is? Create a show, have loyal fans who love it, cancel it, make people angry, make a new show that's similar, a cheap rip off or maybe completely different but in the end we'd all rather that other show be brought back!

Luther is amazing, and Alice is one of my favourite characters ever. Therefore this has to happen!

Why didn't they just revive Firefly!!!! A sure thing...I really need to get over the lost of Firefly, maybe one I will. I'm still at the anger stage of my grief.

Because they don't own the rights.

What ever happened to FTW/WTF and the battle of the channels game? I miss those features.. =\

Oh, and I don't know who Caesar is either. ::shrugs::

A sci-fi show on the SyFy channel? Let's start a betting pool on how long it will last. My guess is it will get axed somewhere in the middle of season 1 with some unfinished episodes never to air.

Sad though, cause the idea sounds kind of interesting at least for a movie. Don't know how long it could carry a TV show, but we probably won't get a chance to find that out anyway.

"Syfy, shooting blanks since we changed our name."

Pariah could be interesting, but San Diego, really? It's not exactly a hotbed of crime in need of sweeping change.

Oh B in Apt 23, don't overuse your gimmick please.

I'm sorry, a HOUSE FOR ALEX AND DAVE?!? WTF? Alex and Dave totally cannot remain a couple, whole point of the damn show.

A science fiction show on SyFy, that's something different.

While it does sound like a Firefly reboot, I'm still hopeful - Syfy needs to get back to making sci-fi, and if this is their way of doing that, I'll watch it. That being said, I hope it's good. If it's not good... well, it'll suck.

Not sure about the Luther - Alice spinoff. I like her character on the show and she COULD be interesting... but she's not exactly a serial killer (she just got away with one particular set of murders) that we could watch like Dexter... although I guess she could reasonably turn into a serial killer... but I'm also a bit worried that I'd find her annoying with a whole show on her.

I like the actors-playing-faux-versions-of-themselves thing, and I love that the B in 23 is taking it as far as they can. Dean Cain and Kevin Sorbo were quite hilarious in the first season.

Rachael Harris is pretty funny, and Happy Endings should really bring that out.

so... Syfy is trying to make a Firefly type show? I'm going on the record saying that's probably going to suck.

Busy Philipps and Mark-Paul Gosselaar, yes. Frankie Muniz, no.

like Rachael Harris but I wish she would get on a show of her own instead of just doing guest appearances, I think the only thing I've seen her playing a series regular has been Notes From The Underbelly.

Thats why we got so many tv shows that involve space, oh wait we havent got one anymore.

Lets just say it will suck so it gets cancelled asap! RIP Firefly, Defying Gravity, Virtuality, Stargate Universe

Are you saying Lochte is a douchebag or that anyone doing reality shows is a douchebag? Just to be clear.

It's Lochte. Definitely.

maybe both?

Why don't you stick to your "As Anita Dick said, my nephew's roomate's fiance's mother's daughter's dog can make $11774 a week just staying at home" type spam messages.

So basically SYFY are rebooting FIREFLY?
Reply
Flag
no they are makeing a show with the same backstory that will complety suck, but this time they will give it a three season shot and when they finally cancel it due to suckiness, they'll be like: 'see? we tried it again, this totally doesn't work, from now on we'll stick to wrestling. What's our name again?'

Why a reboot just bring it back.

Better still bring back Eureka (yeah yeah I know they had nothing to do with it)

SyFy use to be about sci-fi now it's just about crap.

"She'll play a real estate agent who looks for a house for Alex and Dave."

Wait a sec! Is that a spoiler? I know the last shot showed them holding hands, but I didn't think house hunting was in their immediate future.

You rock, Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23! Getting actors to cameo as themselves is exactly the sort of thing I was hoping for when I heard James Van Der Beek was playing himself on the show. Maybe try to get one of the actors from Community to do a cameo. (Alison Brie would be my first choice. But she's usually my first choice for everything.)

Thank you, that was my though exactly it was a cliff hanger!!!! Thanks Tim

Right?!

Completely agree with all of that! But could we get Abed to do a cameo rather than Danny Pudi? (Sorry Danny.)

I have to agree with safibwana. Alice is a fantastic character. I can't wait for a miniseries with her as the main character.
Reply

Why would you think an Alice miniseries would work any better than A Man Called Hawk or The Lone Gunmen? The dynamic between her and Luther is interesting, but I'd be hard-pressed to think of an example of a supporting character being spun off into a series of their own that didn't detract from the original series (other than Frasier and maybe The Jeffersons and Maude).
Reply
Flag
Well, I'm not going to say anything about the quality of either of them, but when Kate Walsh spun off from Grey's Anatomy to create Private Practice that didn't detract from the original series. Might have made it better, actually.

I'd also say Daria, Angel, The Sarah Jane Adventures (or Torchwood if you object to the time lapse), Joanie Loves Cachi (again, all I'm saying is that it didn't harm the original series), and Stargate Atllantis, just to name a few.

Also, they've already made some Luther episodes without Alice (I was not thrilled); they can't seem to come up with enough excuse for them to spend time together.

And it's not like this means she can't appear on Luther. This is not a full time gig. Luther does a whopping almost-handful of episodes per year. Think of it as having more episodes of the same show with the focus on different characters' storylines.

Good point. I was a fan of Angel and only watched one episode of Buffy. I've seen all but one episode of Luther series 2 and am about half-way through series 1 and don't mind the lack of Alice in the second series. However, I would argue that secondary characters who are made primary characters in their own series often lose the quality or the edge that made them interesting in the first place. I can take Alice in small doses, but why would I want to watch a series focusing on her, and how would Neal Cross have to compromise the character to make her palatable to the general public. as a protagonist?

Hmm, interesting to see a different opinion. When I'm watching the show I almost prefer Alice to John, and sorely missed her during S2.

Clandestine sounds promising, glad to see Syfy doing something with a script!
