News Briefs: Syfy Orders The Expanse, a Space Opera from the Writers of Children of Men

BACK TO THE FUTURE

... Syfy has given a straight-to-series order to The Expanse, a space opera set 200 years in the future. Based on the sci-fi book series from James S. A. Corey (a.k.a. collaborators Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, who write under that pen name), the 10-episode thriller follows a detective and a rogue ship's captain as they race across the solar system in search of a missing young woman, with the potential to expose "the greatest conspiracy in human history." Both Abraham and Franck will serve as producers on the series, which also boasts Oscar-nominated screenwriting duo Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of MenIron Man) as writers and executive producers. This is awesome news simply because it means Syfy is finally getting back into the space race. BUSINESS TIME

... Damon Lindelof's new series The Leftovers, which premieres June 15 and details what happens after two percent of the world's population disappears, possibly as part of the Rapture, is taking a short production hiatus before filming the first season's final episodes. Some might interpret this as a bad thing, because production breaks often mean something's not working creatively. However, it isn't supposed to delay the show's debut date, so perhaps we should wait to pass judgement. [Deadline]

... The people behind Sharknado 2 want you to fund a scene from the film. It will only be produced if enough people sign on to help pay for it. And if it gets made, it will involve chainsaws. I can't tell you what to do with your money—wait, sure I can. This is the internet. Don't spend your money on an extra scene for Sharknado 2, guys. Spend it on something useful, like Chipotle. Or whiskey. Or a life-sized Stormtrooper replica. But not this. [Indiegogo]

... Spike TV has renewed Auction Hunters, the network's longest-running, non-scripted original series. It's about two dudes who love auctions; the new season will run for 20 episodes and will see said dudes, Allen Haff and Ton Jones, expand beyond bidding on storage units when they hit the road to attend other types of auctions, too. Season 5 is expected to premiere in fall 2014. [THR]

... Discovery is planning to milk Joby Ogwyn's upcoming live leap from Mt. Everest for all its worth. The network will broadcast five consecutive nights of Everest: Live from Base Camp, beginning at 11pm Monday, May 5 and leading up to Ogwyn's leap of destiny. Hosted by Chris Jacobs and NBC Sports' Kyle Martino, each night's broadcast will feature up-to-the-minute weather-pattern news as well as interviews with a variety of guests, including medics and Sherpa guides. Screw Jack Bauer, man, I want to hear all about the weather on Mt. Everest! [Discovery via press release]

... Jimmy Kimmel is going Behind the Scandalabra next Thursday, April 17 with a Scandal-themed episode following the Season 3 finale. He'll interview showrunner Shonda Rhimes and premiere a never-before-seen blooper reel. A show as wackadoodle as Scandal has to have some pretty amazing bloopers, right? Pour the wine and pass the popcorn! [ABC via press release]

CASTING NEWS

... Emily Bergl, who was recently upped to series regular status on Showtime's Shameless, will guest-star on Elementary. She'll play Marion West, a tattoo artist who becomes a suspect in her husband's murder. Look, girl, you're a Gallagher now. This shit was bound to happen sooner or later. [TV Guide]

... Melanie Papalia (The Newsroom) will guest-star in Season 4 of Suits (did you catch MaryAnn's review of the Season 3 finale?) as Amy, Mike's new executive secretary. If you're a Mike and Rachel shipper, though, don't worry: Series creator Aaron Korsh recently told TVGuide.com that the writers have no plans to break up the happy-ish couple at this time. No thanks. I'd love to fund an effort to prevent Sharknado 2 though. Can we unleash the chainsaws on the set and script? Classin' it up on the see-fee network, I see! Can't wait for Croco-Saurus vs. Bear-Pig or whatever the hell it is they tend to unleash on society. Only Bravo could do more damage.

Change detective to doctor and we have Firefly.

Woohoo, sci fi on the SyFy channel! I am still mad at them for cancelling Alphas, though. You can never trust the SyFy channel. They'll cancel anything that isn't haunted.

It's someone who doesn't want to see their relationship get any more screen time. Let's just ignore it, assume it's fine, and not waste any lines in the script talking about it.

An actual sci-fi show on Syfy? Didn't see that coming at all. Must have run out of reality competition ideas early this year. Great news for Emily Bergl, so happy to see her coming back on Shameless and a spot on Elementary sounds just about as awesome!

The Leftovers sound interesting, but that it's on HBO is worrying. It'll probably be another lame drama and lots of crying and hysterical mothers, with a lot of nudity thrown in for no good reason, simply because they can... So, I have my doubts about it.

Thankfully we have Syfy who almost always have great series. The Expanse sounds great! I do hope there will be aliens too, and not just a detective show - in space... I haven't read the books, so I know nothing about what to expect. I will give it a try though.

As always, we'll give The Expanse a chance as it is scifi.

TV.com seems to not want to anwser my question? so maybe you have a guess as to why they described the plot for the first book but have the book cover of the second book at the top? can't wait for volume four.

They shouldn't have waited so long to make a decision on Auction Hunters. That last one really felt like the last episode, what with Allen finally getting married and the shadowy organization S.H.A.D.O.W. finally brought down for good. And just how are they going to resolve Ton's on-screen death? They wrote themselves into a corner there. Maybe they can claim he was a Space Clone like before?

Burn your money rather than giving it directly to the Sharknado jerkoffs, you'll get more out of it that way. At least burning money gives off heat and light. Holy crap, the balls on those guys asking others to fund their piece of shit movie scene that we all know they already filmed anyway. Ugh, it already is 5% funded. And then they put a bullshit charitable donation on it as well? Christ! This fad needs to die a quick, silent death.

Yeah, JT, these idiots think they're Veronica Mars or something. Sharknado was kinda fun, only because of some of the wonderful jokes on here about it. I'm going with Kaitlin's Whiskey suggestion. Wanna join me?

Well, like they say, "Hope in one hand, shit in the other, and see which one fills up first." The reality crap--and make no mistake, it IS crap--pays the bills. I was over at my son's house tonight, for dinner, and they had it on the whole time. When I picked up the remote and turned it off, my son's father-in-law turned it right back on. They should use reality crap to rehabilitate criminals, but it wouldn't work, because they're all stupid, like my son's father-in-law, and he's done some time.

For a simple blurb about an upcoming show, it's not an important detail in the least. The pic is cool & the news delivered.
Most people in the world have never heard of the book series & couldn't care less about what pic was posted; so, no harm, no foul.
