News Briefs: TBS Could Save Cougar Town

BUSINESS TIME

... Cougar Town's future on ABC doesn't look good. But it's future on TBS does! The comedy might escape cancellation thanks to the cable channel, which is looking at picking up TWO seasons of the Courteney Cox comedy. The initial deal would be for two 15-episode seasons, ensuring that the show would air enough episodes to be sold into syndication. Abed approves. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Lifetime has renewed The Client List for a second season. The drama stars Jennifer Love Hewitt as a whore. Seriously, her character works at a day spa where employees rub and tug clients to happiness, but she's also a single mom in a conservative town! Don't get your home life and your work life confused, J-Lo, or your kid could end up in protective custody. [Lifetime via press release]

... Now this I will watch! CMT has ordered Redneck Island, which is essentially Survivor with backwoods hillbillies. Awesome. Twelve "simple folk" will be flown to a tropical island to compete for $100,000. Still awesome. Steve Austin the former wrestler will host. Again, awesome. Coconut moonshine, coming right up! [Deadline Hollywood]

TV SPENDS MONEY LIKE CRAZY NEWS

... How much did Oprah and Discovery lose on OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network? $330 million. I'm no accountant, but I think that's bad. [Business Week]

... Mad Men played a Beatles song, "Tomorrow Never Knows," in last night's episode. Producer Lionsgate had to pay $250,000 for the rights. Duh, doesn't Matthew Weiner know he could have downloaded off iTunes for like a buck? [NY Times]

CASTING NEWS

... Dylan Baker (The Good Wife) has joined the USA miniseries Political Animals, just like everyone else seems to be doing these days. The series follows the former first family as they struggle to hold onto power in Washington, D.C. Baker will play the current vice president. Adrian Pasdar recently signed on as the acting president. [Deadline Hollywood]

... James Cromwell (Babe) will head to freaksville on American Horror Story next season. He's in line to play Dr. Arden, the nemesis to Jessica Lange's head of the insane asylum where Season 2 will take place. Cromwell and Lange sharing the screen? This should be great! [Deadline Hollywood]

DRUNK-DRIVING NEWS

... Matthew Fox is in the news for the wrong reasons again. The Lost star got picked up by cops on Friday night for driving under the influence. Of alcohol, I assume. He was on the way to get some fast food at 3:23am in his hometown of Bend, Oregon. So let's start a nasty rumor that he was high as a kite, too. We have to go back... to Taco Bell because the Doritos Locos taste so good when you're blazed, bro! [TMZ]

TBS, huh? I'd be all over that, but I'm surprised they can find the budget for an established show with a large cast.

I caught a few minutes of The Client List while flipping a few days ago, oh my goodness is that on the right channel - that is the schlockiest, worst-looking piece of crap, very Lifetime. I don't know who the demographic was on it though, and JLH's Texan accent was sooooo bad.

Haw haw, Oprah hit the wall.

Dylan Baker, does he finally get to play a character who isn't a sleazy liar? That show is going to be all character-actors at this point.

This season of Cougar Town is bad. Hopefully the move to TBS (if it happens) will stop the writers from trying to appeal to the masses and get back to quirky niche episodes which made season 2 so great.

I really enjoyed the first season of Cougar Town.

Don't know if the show changed or I did, but I find it borderline unwatchable now.

Did they hire new writers or something?

Orpah seemed to get a little too full of herself. It seems people aren't as interested in Oprah as she is.

Which is of course exactly what the show should be called :-)

That would be pretty cool of TBS if they decided to save Cougar Town. Also, Matthew Fox....

I love how Tim listed James Cromwell's most recognizable film has "Babe". (^_^) Screw all that other stuff he's been in, that talking pig movie is the tops!

Hehe, I giggled at that too.

Steve Austin's career really has gone to hell hasn't it?

I can get behind this entire story because it involves the possible saving of "Cougar Town"!!!!!!

For those of you who have never seen the show: FORGET the concept of a "cougar" (because that's probably what turned you off the show, believe me, that stopped me for the longest time). It is a hilarious show on par with "Scrubs" (not the last year) and deserves to be watched and laughed at. Good for TBS. If they go through with this, then for this and for "Conan", I will forever be grateful.

I respect your opinion, and God Bless if the show is saved. I'm on board. I liked the show better when it WAS about a "cougar".

But to compare it to Scrubs is not only sacrilegious but unsupportable. There is no comparison whatsoever other than sharing an actress (who was great as a comically wicked wife on Scrubs but pretty despicable as a "battle ax" wife on this show)

I wonder if Cougar Town was renewed in the darkest timeline ...

Let CT go, please!!!

The first half of season 1 was the only good part, now its just assinine!!!

You clearly liked the initial plot of CT, but then they took a different direction. This doesn't mean that the show was better and after the first half of season1 it got worse... it means that you don't like, period.

what you said is not as logical as you think it is...it's perfectly possible that the show "got worse". His claim is no more unreasonable than your counterpoint.

In my opinion, the show seems like it's in its 9th season and has no new ideas, so it just trots along on "gosh" and "schucks" and "aint we quirky" yimitty yammity every week, banking that we will continue to love these characters no matter how weak the story lines or dialog or jokes are.

Problem is, the show hasn't earned the right to constantly take victory laps every week.

Incorrect. ABC DID hold on to "Scrubs" for one season too many, but CT is doing just fine.

TBS failed to save My Name Is Earl, can they save Cougar Town?
