News Briefs: The Voice Is Moving to the Fall

NBC IS STICKING WITH THE HOT HAND NEWS

... NBC is in last place. NBC has a surprise hit in The Voice. Therefore, NBC is going to load up on The Voice as much as it can. The singing competition will be moved from its normal midseason slot to the fall for the 2012-2013 TV season, with all four judges returning for Season 3. After its post-Super Bowl boost, the show has gotten off to a tremendous start in Season 2, with last week's episode drawing more than 16 million viewers. NBC has yet to confirm the move, but given how desperate NBC is, we all knew it was coming. [The Wrap]

SAMCRO NEWS

... Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter has announced that the fifth season of his hit show will feature four new characters. One is the father of a woman Tig killed in Season 4, one is from a new gang/MC we've never seen, one is described as "hard, curvy, and very sexy," and one sounds like a total badass. Keep 'em coming, Kurt. [Sutterink]

HEY COMEDY CENTRAL HAS ANOTHER STAND-UP SHOW COMING NEWS

... Comedy Central has ordered eight episodes of Mash Up, a show featuring stand-up comedy and some material acted out as sketches. Comedian T.J. Miller will host. [Deadline Hollywood]

CASTING BONANZA NEWS

... Former Friends star Matthew Perry is returning to television after starring in ABC's failed Mr. Sunshine. Perry will recur on CBS's The Good Wife as... a lawyer! Look for Chandler to appear on the series starting March 25. [EW]

... Ugly Betty's Ana Ortiz has landed a role on Marc Cherry's Devious Maids. She'll play a Beverly Hills maid looking to help her son beat a murder charge. Heroes' Dania Ramirez has also been cast in the series. [Deadline Hollywood]

... The legendary Donald Sutherland is joining his son Kiefer at Fox. The elder Sutherland has been cast in the comedy pilot Living Loaded, about a man (Mike Vogel) who goes from hard-partying blogger (?) to NPR radio host. Sutherland will play the man's father and the general manager of the radio station. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Scott Speedman (Felicity) has joined ABC's pilot Last Resort. Created by Shawn Ryan (The Shield), the thriller follows a crew of a nuclear submarine that secedes from the United States after refusing an order to launch a nuclear missile. Speedman will play the second-in-command on the vessel that's long, hard, and full of seamen. Hee hee. Junior high school jokes are the best. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Eureka's Colin Ferguson is already back to work, signing on to star in Like Father. The Fox comedy pilot, from Cougar Town creator Bill Lawrence, follows a father who moves in with his son in a college apartment. [Deadline Hollywood]

... When ABC's pilot The Smart One cast Portia de Rossi as a woman who lives in the shadow of her hotter sister, I thought, "Boy oh boy, they're gonna have a hard time finding someone cuter than Portia!" But they did. Malin Ackerman (Childrens Hospital, The Watchmen) will play a woman who becomes the mayor of a city and gets help from her jealous and intellectually superior sister (de Rossi). Really?! Portia de Rossi is supposed to have us believe she's the less attractive sister with an inferiority complex? Ridiculous. Why can't they give a less stunning actress an actual chance to shine on screen? Seriously.

Ugh, Comedy Central needs to figure out how to actually keep a stand-up show going. I keep hoping John Oliver's stand up series will return, but my DVR keeps disappointing me. Comedy Central needs more stand-up and less reruns of sitcoms - especially in the morning and afternoon, I don't want to watch Entourage, jerks!

Has Eureka finished filming? They certainly haven't finished airing the series, so I thought they'd be filming for another few months, thus Colin Ferguson is still working. Oh well, the new show sounds cute but too sitcommy - since it's Fox, I assume it's already been schedule-bumped for Idol and then canceled before the first frame has been shot.

Didn't we already get a quick glimpse of the father of the girl that Tig ran over on the sidewalk? Wasn't he the head of a major gang/ mafia?

Or is this going to be a completely different guy? Tig has taken out so many people, it's hard to keep track.

Seriously? Portia de Rossi as the more unattractive sister. This is why women have self-esteem issues.

The Voice is a great, fun show ... but... only during the blind auditions... then it just becomes a normal boring singing competition.

NBC is gambling that the move of The Voice won't hurt the show's ratings.

What do you want to bet that the college apartment shown on Like Father will be ten times bigger than any real college apartment?

so basically The Voice is doing what American Idol did.. after season 1 finished in September 2002, season 2 premiered 4 months later in January..

and yeah Like Father sounds a lot like the season 3 premiere Travis and Bobby plotline..

Malin Ackerman is hot and all, but I don't see her being the "hotter sister" to Portia de Rossi

Like Father sounds like it could be a rejected Cougar Town plotline.

I also agree that Portia de Rossi is hotter than Malin Ackerman. And yes, I say that knowing I don't have a chance in you know what with her.

I'm a little surprised NBC is planning on still being around next Fall.

On the casting of "The Smart One", I think Portia de Rossi is more attractive than Malin Akerman. And I can imagine the two will split the vote if they were ever in an election. Nonetheless, I hope de Rossi will be utilized well in this new sitcom.

personally i can't see a comparison Malin Akerman is far more attracitve and absolutely superb in Children's Hospital - but it's going to be a good show regardless!!

I love Portia...ever since she played Nel in Ally McBeal....though she makes me feel a little weird. I never thought that I would end up being jealous of a woman for her "catch," but man am I jealous of Ellen.

News Flash, NBC instead of creating new and inventive ideas is just going to play The voice and Biggest Loser in a loop.

Samcro, and all of these new characters are going to be wrapped up in a neat and stupid package consisting of the CIA coming in and making everything ok. Ta da.

Bring back Eureka, don't cancel a show that has nothing wrong with it and is still amazing. However that show could be good.

Eureka should never have jumped to the new timeline. I hope the ends sees them return to the original. That would be great, if done right. As it is now, it's where the show sort of, slightly, when off a rail for me.

Original time line would be great. The only interesting thing about new timeline was learning that, apparently, Beverly Barlowe is a nuisance wherever they go.

I though Eureka was amazing when it started, but then the dropped the whole artifact story line with no notice, and I was like "Huh? I thought you had something good going there...", then they dumped a few of my favourite characters, and then the whole timeline switcheroo, The show keeps poking at my "why?" receptors, but I still look forward to and thoroughly enjoy the show. I hope it ends strong.

One big disappointment for me also was when Ferguson goes to tell his daughter he's not her real father, and they just walk off out of the scene and we never see it or her reaction - nothing.

She's the whole reason he ended up in Eureka in the first place. Then she finds out she's pretty smart. Then the actress leaves the show for that Kelsey Grammar comedy that tanked. She never should have left. When she came back, it was as though there was no enthusiasm for her return, even by her, and she's treated like a disposable guest star. To have them do that scene right would have been great, but you get nothing from something that should have been so very important.

Agreed. On all points, but at least they still have Joe.

Do they? Seems last summer ended with Jo going on walkabout.

Yes, it was. Next season is it's last.

Aw, well 5 seasons ain't bad. At least we'll get some sort of conclusion.

Wait, was Eureka canceled??
Reply

Never mind, just saw that it was returning in April. Ya scared me there, Tim.
Reply

yes but it was cancelled because they were originally planning a last season of season 6 yet they cancelled the show at the end of the season coming up. I am a bit disappointed by that since they had pretty much wrapped production on season 5 when they announced it and only gave them 1 episode instead of a 6 episode season 6 to finish the show
