News Briefs: The Walking Dead Dominated the Ratings in Its Return

GOODBYE BROADCAST NETWORKS, IT WAS FUN WHILE IT LASTED

... The zombie apocalypse's first major victims might just be the major television networks. The Season 3 premiere of AMC's The Walking Dead on Sunday was BIG. More than 10.9 million total viewers watched the first airing last night, and the show's rating among 18-49 year olds was a 5.8. That's larger than any single episode of entertainment programming (i.e. non-special or non-sports broadcast) has scored this fall. Yes, that's more than Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, NCIS, and Beauty and the Beast. How long before NBC greenlights a zombie show starring Dane Cook? [AMC via press release]

PREMIERE DATES PREMIERE DATES PREMIERE DATES

... Syfy's Being Human will be back for Season 3 on January 14 with more monstrous roommate problems. Mark Pellegrino will be back to reprise his role as Bishop, but whether that's as a ghost in Aidan's brain or as a character back from the dead is yet to be seen. Also, Kristen Hager, who plays hottie blonde Nora, has been promoted to series regular status but we knew that already. [TV Line]

... HBO has announced the premiere dates for Girls and Enlightened: January 13. If you haven't seen Enlightened yet GET ON IT because it's great. As for Girls, I hate it but what do I know? [HBO via press release]

... Of course, the premieres listed above might not happen at all if the Mayans were right and the end of the world is nigh in December. More evidence that they were right? Bravo's Shahs of Sunset will return for Season 2 on December 2. [Deadline Hollywood]

DEVELOPMENTAL ISSUES

... NBC is developing a comedy with reality star Rachel Zoe based on her life. So I guess it's about a woman who probably shouldn't be famous? [Deadline Hollywood]

CASTING NEWS

... Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will both host the 70th Golden Globe Awards, scheduled to air on NBC on January 13. I can't wait for some Baby Mama sketches! [NBC via press release]

... Mark Pellegrino hasn't appeared on Person of Interest yet so the TV casting gods said "let's fix that" and got him a guest role on the CBS hit. Pellegrino will reunite with his Lost co-star Michael Emerson and play the head of a publishing empire later this season. [TV Guide]

... Guitarist Dave Navarro will guest-star on Sons of Anarchy as a gang member from Nero's past. [EW]

TIDBITS ABOUT REALLY RICH GUYS

... CBS has extended its contract with CEO Les Moonves through mid-2017. The terms of the contract weren't disclosed, but I'm hearing from sources it was for an allowance of $13 a week. Hey Moonves, you're looking extra handsome today! (Raise?) [Deadline Hollywood]

... Mitt Romney canceled his well-publicized scheduled appearance on The View this Thursday because Mitt Romney doesn't have the spare time to talk to a bunch of lowly 2-percenters! Mitt's wife Anne will take his place. [THR]

That's pretty good for TWD...doesn't include all the ones who DVR'd and haven't watched it yet. Like me....lol

Oh, Tina and Amy is great news too. I wouldn't watch the Golden Globe's if it had Ricky Gervais hosting.

TWD has broken the same record 3 times in the past year. I'm glad that it's unstoppable.

Tim, it's "Ann" Romney, not "Anne".

Careful Mitt, you know what they say about Ann, you don't want to use her too much or folks will get tired of her. Oh wait, that wasn't "they" who said that, it was YOU! Jerk.

How awkward for Julie Chen would it have been if her husband hadn't gotten his contract renewed? It's the only reason she's on TV every day.

Ugh, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler together hosting? That is going to be painful, lots of stupid grins at half-baked, unfunny jokes; and self-satisfied smirks at soft gags; and sloppy, partly-committed, toothless bits. Luckily it's the Golden Globes so nobody will be watching and nobody will care. "Remember that thing Amy Poehler did on the Golden Globes last night?" "No, of course not, I didn't watch it. And you didn't either." "Oh yeah! Tra la la, la la la, la."

I have to admit that's something for TWD since AMC is still off of DISH. Definitely impressive.

I wouldn't mind seeing Dane Cook get killed each week.

TWD was brilliant! Kept entertained and on the edge of your seat all the way through even though the story was still being told. Other shows take note, this is what you have to do stay alive!

Yet you post? Why.

It`s true more people post when they have something negative to say rather than positive. I have no problem with people complaining about episodes or characters or storylines, But buddy you have`nt watched in 2 years so why even post?

Good question. Guess I'll delete it.

The TWD season premiere was awesome!, In just a blink the episode was ended.. that's how u know that u r really enjoying a show.

So true, at the end of the episode the prisoner said Holy Shit, then cut to black. Then I said literally said holy shit it`s over already!? lol

Those numbers for TWD are pretty impressive! I wonder how big they would be if we considered all the people who downloaded the episode for free?
Reply

Probably more than 5 million. And I might or not be one of them... :)

The season three premiere of TWD was just TOO good, save for some minor inconsistencies. Simply amazing. Good to hear about the other premiers.

There is no questioning personal opinion, but boy are you wrong on this one! There is not a single better show on air than The Walking Dead.

There's a lot of better shows than the Walking Dead, but you only need to name one. Breaking Bad.

It isn't even the best show on Sunday night, let alone all of television. It hasn't even strung half a season worth of good eps together yet. Heck, over half of it's episodes I would consider average or worse.

Not a single better show is correct... there are several better shows on the air.

In your opinion there are better shows. I hate when people word their opinions as if they are the only ones that matter.

Tell that to 'smithinjapan'

Breaking Bad is well acted, written, and directed. It doesn't have zombies though, so it loses.

Oh yeah, that is totally what I was doing. *giant obvious eye roll*... People shouldn't have to preface everything with their intent so idiots like you don't get panty knots.

Does it hurt to have your head so far up your own ass?

Reply

No. Breaking Bad is simply better. There's no way around it, it doesn't matter the opinion; it's an overall better show no matter which way you put it.

That is good to heat about the return date for Community.

Oh, my bad, no word yet on the return date! grumblegrumble...

It's crazy, TWD has beaten it's own record two years in a row. Take that, reality-TV!

I don't want to see Pellegrino's character on BH. That was the least interesting role I've seen him do so far (maybe it's a tie with Revolution), and his character is DEAD. I don't like dreams and hallucinations in my TV shows, so I would rather not see him at all.

Did I miss it or was there no "FTW vs WTF" this weekend?

I think it's regularly discussed in the podcasts now instead of being posted on the site. Which I have no problem with.

that's a shame really, I enjoy it (and fair play to the commenter who named it, makes me feel stupid everytime when I remember TV.com's article to name it) but I have no desire to listen to the podcast.

I can't wait for Syfy's Being Human!

The Walking Dead pulling in those kinds of numbers is not surprising, but good news for cable tv anyways!

Who the hell is Rachel Zoe?

Looking forward to Mark Pellegrino guest starring on Person of Interest! And returning as Bishop on Being Human, even though last season was hit and miss.

I thought it was pretty surprising. Don't forget that a major cable provider in the USA (Dish) recently dropped AMC. According to Wikipedia, they have 14 million customers. Also, those numbers are ridiculously huge. TWD gets 5.8 while OUAT gets 3.0, and Last Resort (a show with some problems, but still the best new show of the year) gets 1.7.

AMC's show numbers never ticked down after Dish dropped them, in fact many went up. While I love these reported numbers for TWD, this just reinforces how outdated and completely inaccurate Nielsen ratings are, given they base their numbers on a ridiculously tiny sample size of 25,000 households out of 115.9 Million. That's around 0.02% of all homes.
Reply

That's interesting. I have always thought that the system seemed stupid, but I wasn't aware of the numbers. I wonder how they choose those households. For example, are families given priority over singles or couples without children? What do they do if a family has 2 or 3 TV sets? Do they only monitor one of them?

At another site that I frequent, there was a guy who was participating in the Nielsen survey. He complained that there was a stupid form that they had to fill out every month, with information like what channels they have access to. It took him about an hour each time, and he had to tell them the same things every time. So it seems that it takes a special kind of person (or household) to put up with their nonsense.

I'd have loved Ricky Gervais as the Golden Globes host, but Tina and Amy are equally great!

And Ann Romney on The View has all the making of a great SNL sketch. They love those ladies and Kate McKinnon as Ann is just... incredible!

People seem to get mad at Gervais' piss-taking jokes about all the celebs but those are the only Golden Globes I've stayed tuned into for more than 10 minutes.

And its not out of obsession with my fellow Brit, if anything he kinda annoys me the rest of the time. Except for The Office and Extras which are class
