News Briefs: The X-Files Will Celebrate Its 20th Birthday at Comic-Con

THE TRUTH IS IN SAN DIEGO CHUGGING MOUNTAIN DEW AND EATING CHURROS

... The X-Files will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a panel at this year's Comic-Con. Series creator Chris Carter and writers David Amann, Vince Gilligan (who now has his own nifty show), Howard Gordon, Darin Morgan, Glen Morgan, John Shiban, and Jim Wong will be on hand for the Thursday, July 18 panel. Gillian Anderson has also confirmed an appearance, but there's been no word from David Duchovny. He's got to show up, right? [E! Online]

BUSINESS TIME

... Viewership for network reality shows continues to dwindle, and the latest victim of audience malaise is Big Brother. Last night's Season 15 premiere tied an all-time low launch rating for the series, drawing 6.3 million viewers and a 2.1 rating among adults 18-49, ridiculous new contestants notwithstanding. In contrast, Under the Dome's debut on Monday drew an impressive 13.1 million viewers. [EW]

... The CW is developing an adaptation of the Venezuelan telenovela Jane the Virgin, and you have to listen to this awesome description. Jane, a respectable, religious goody-goody, gets accidentally artificially inseminated through a series of hilarious circumstances! I am def watching this one. [Deadline Hollywood]

CASTING NEWS

... Last Resort's Scott Speedman will star in Ryan Murphy's HBO pilot Open. The drama is described as an exploration of modern sexuality. Speedman will play a hunky sports executive, and chances are very high that you will get to watch him have sex. Let's see if he's learned anything since Felicity! [Deadline Hollywood]

... First Andrew McCarthy, now Sendhil Ramamurthy!?!?!? A day after casting the Pretty in Pink star, CBS's summer series Unforgettable has booked Ramamurthy (Heroes) for a guest role. In the second season's second episode, he'll play a criminal who's employed by a mystery man. [TV Line]

She'll play a lady who inherits her dad's arms-smuggling business but uses its resources to install data cable networks between Israel and the West Bank and then earns a position in the U.K.'s House of Parliament where Zzzzzzzzzz... [The Wrap]

... Getting to announce the nominations for the Emmy Awards is a great honor for actors. Until they realize that for some stupid reason the nominations are announced at like four in the morning on the West Coast (okay, 5:40am, but with a shower, breakfast, L.A. traffic, and a Botox touch-up, they'll have to wake up by 4:15am at the latest). This year's presenters will be Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul (yeah, bitch) and House of Cards' Kate Mara. The selection of Mara could be seen as the Emmys accepting Netflix and other online fare as legitimate television, or maybe someone at the Academy just thinks she's cute. [The Wrap]

INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT NEWS

... Pretty Little Liars' Lucy Hale and Revolution's Graham Rogers (Danny!) are dating! [US]

... Justified's (and The Following's, I guess) Natalie Zea got engaged! Congratulations to Zea, and a big heart-stomping weep-fest to me. [People]

REQUIRED READING

... James Gandolfini's funeral was held this morning in New York, and Hitfix's Alan Sepinwall was there. His account of the procession, including a eulogy from The Sopranos creator David Chase, is surreal and truly touching. [Hitfix]

"The X-Files" is the show which re-defined television, and in a few years time it will become known as THE show of the 90s. First of all, don't think "Fight the Future" - the movie was nowhere near as smart or well-written as the series, and was only a sort of Hollywood-esque approach to the concept of the show. Although some episodes are a bit on the downside, the majority of X-Files episodes are true masterpieces which really challenge our "little grey cells" in a way no other TV program does. Great cinematography, great writing, great FX and an always amazing soundtrack by Mark Snow turn "The X-Files" into a chilling television experience.

Am I the only one who doesn't know what Plinko is? I thought it said "Pinko" at first, and I thought it was an all Communist episode. Which would be very odd, since Communism and The Price is Right doesn't seem like the best combo.

I for one welcome Afghanistans Got Talent. Anything to show the idiotic masses of the world that the majority of people in them scary other countries are just like us when it comes to love for singing, dancing, and generally making a fool of ones self. I think it will be highly interesting, and talk about some 'sob stories' that put 'Little Susie Q's Dad Died and Mom Had To WOrk Extra Shifts To Put Her Through Piano Classes' type of stuff. And generally I find that when people have little to nothing their creativity and talents fill the gap.

One of the best episodes of Anthony Bourdains No Reservations is the Saudi Arabia one, just because it gives a glimpse into a culture we never see.

Kudos to someone taking something other than explosives, Oil Wells and death and destruction to Afghanistan.

That's a really good point. I read that and groaned at the stupidity of another talent show. This one from Afghanistan! But your comment has totally changed my mind about that. I fear that most Americans wont see things the same way, but if even a few do than maybe some good can come out of it.

Jane the virgin sounds like it could be awful or brilliantly insane.... I would be more hopeful if it was on cable where it could be tailored for adults and not 12-year olds...

Booo Michael Connelly. I'm a fan of his and I like the Harry Bosch series but if you're going to sell the rights to adapting it, I wouldn't have chosen Amazon (of course, I'm assuming his popular and long-running series had other suitors).

Kate Mara is stunning and oh so slightly insane, could make for an interesting host! Can she host the Emmy's award night too? Ooohhh, Kate Mara and John Noble - that would be awesome.

Speaking of awesome - The X Files. No. 3 on the list of "Best TV Shows Ever Created", can you guess the two that finished first and second? No, of course not!

Hopefully this will be a good excuse for them to finally release the series on Blu ray.I can't believe they still haven't done this considering it's still the 3rd longest running sci fi series behind SG 1 and Smallville.
I also hope reality tv viewership continues to dwindle...and the end of Simon Cowell one day...aka the prince of darkness

Hahahahhahahahahahhahahahahha! Afghanistan's got Talent and "Jane the Virgin" all in the one day. Thats too much ridiculousness right there. But I hope to God Jane the Virgin is picked up. I woul watch the shit out of that show!!
God love the poor Afghani's. Don't those poor fuckers have enough to deal with, without Simon Cowell and his money grabbing exploitation machine roaring into town to defile all round him??
Captain Planet as a movie? If its not animated then feck off!
I wonder will the joys of engagement-hood make Zea's character less of a nightmare in the Following S02?

20 years for The X-Files huh? That's astonishing, makes me feel a tad old. Duchovny has done Comic-Con before, for the last X-Files movie (which I was warned off seeing by a friend I made at Comic-Con), but he's one of those folks who is unpredictable, so who knows. I can see putting that on my C-level or B-level list though, could be fun. I once saw Gillian Anderson throw a soda can out of her car in Los Feliz, I looked in its direction and she gave me the dirtiest stink-eye for it. Another TRUE TALE OF HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR!

Oh snap, an All-Plinko episode, I'll put that on the DVR. I knew I should have gone up to Television City this week!

Hey, Amazon sees the writing on the wall, CBS ain't #1 for nuthin'.

They've been talking about a Captain Planet movie since forever, show me a frame of footage and I'll be impressed. Until then: vaporware.

Why... why is CBS bringing Under the Dome to Comic-Con? What a waste of money, it's a friggin' miniseries at this point. Ugh, and Beauty and the Beast? Gonna be a blast laughing at that. Stupid tv networks don't know how Comic-Con works. You want to put yourself back on the map with that crowd? New Trek show. Otherwise, suck it.

Falling Skies had the weirdest booth last year, a Rube Goldbergian guillotine display, doesn't surprise me they'll be there this year.

thx. chaos physics at work. I think it does go plink, but it would plink more if they used bare metal pegs like they are supposed to.
Reply

Jun 28, 2013
The original one did have bare metal pegs, not sure when/if they retired it, it made more of a "plink" sound but also would occasionally allow the chips to get stuck. This new model, if it's not the original with a plastic honeycomb attached over the pegs, does alright on the sound though.

It's not as chaotic as one might think, statistically the center slot will result in an average of a quarter of the maximum value of the board.

It's a simplified giant pachinko machine. Have you seen the show more than once? It's the most famous game going back to early in Bob Barker's run. I once saw it being trucked down the street on the back of a studio prop flatbed and nearly lost my lunch from excitement.

The big wheel is the Showcase Showdown, and it has a surprising amount of rules for a wheel of fortune. Its beeping is ingrained on my psyche.

Jun 28, 2013
That's the Showcase itself, the game at the very end between the 2 winners of the 6 who played the showcase showdown. The Showcase Showdown is 3 contestants from the regular games (the first half's trio and then the second half's trio) battling each other to see who can get to the showcase at the end by spinning the wheel to get as close to a dollar without going over, as well as possibly win cash depending on which numbers they land on leading to a bonus spin... ok, see what I mean about a lot of rules for a simple wheel?
