News Briefs: Treme Postponed Until Fall

SAD TROMBONE NEWS

... HBO is delaying the third season Treme until the fall. The series, which usually launches in April, is likely a casualty of HBO's wealth of new programming. Game of Thrones, Veep, and Girls are all premiering in April, and the network may be looking to spread its shows a bit more. One thing that could work in Treme's favor: Perhaps it will be paired with Boardwalk Empire, which would help grow Treme's audience. Series creator David Simon said, "It just doesn't matter. I don't pull an audience no matter where they put me on." [NOLA.com]

HOW THE MIGHTY ARE SLOWLY FALLING NEWS

... Look, American Idol isn't exactly in danger of being canceled, but we have to write this news because it's been an annual tradition since the the late 2000s. The ratings for Idol's premiere were down on Wednesday, with 21.6 million people tuning in to see the first episode. Last year, 26.25 million tuned in for the season premiere. Oh boo-hoo, only 21.6 million? [TV By the Numbers]

FABULOUS NEWS

... GLAAD, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, has announced its nominees for the GLAAD awards. Up for Outstanding Drama Series are Degrassi, Grey's Anatomy, Pretty Little Liars, Shameless, and Torchwood: Miracle Day. The nominated comedies are The Big C, Exes and Ohs, Glee, Happy Endings, and Modern Family. To see the whole list of nominees, which includes one for Man Up, hit the link. [GLAAD]

DEVELOPMENT DEALS

... CBS has ordered a pilot for Jerry Bruckheimer's Trooper, about a mom who becomes a New York State Trooper. She'll be putting criminals in jail... without supper! [Deadline Hollywood]

... Fox had ordered a pilot for a series about a teen girl who is recruited by the CIA to become a spy after her spy dad is killed. It's untitled, but I have a suggestion: Pretty Little Spyers. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Martin Lawrence (Mahhhhhhhhht-eeeeeeen!) is being targeted by CBS for two potential series. In one, Lawrence would play a single man who becomes a foster parent to several children. In the other, Lawrence would play a family man with wealthy in-laws and kids who feel entitled. In both, he'd be dreaming of the days when he was on Bad Boys and wondering why Will Smith is still a star but he's faded out. [TV Guide]

CANCELLATION AND RENEWAL NEWS

... The Feds have shut down Megaupload, a file-sharing site that has become known for pirating movies, TV shows, video games, and pictures of your mom. Oh man, I burned you good. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Divorce Court and Judge Alex have been renewed through the 2013-2014 season, so go ahead and marry that chick you met online yesterday! [Deadline Hollywood]

CASTING NEWS

... Anne Heche has been cast in the NBC single-camera comedy pilot Save Me. Heche will play a woman who believes she is a conduit for God after an accident. Sounds kind of like Enlightened, doesn't it? [Deadline Hollywood]

... Courtney B. Vance is headed to Revenge to play a powerful defense lawyer caught up in legal proceedings after (more) trouble arises in the Hamptons. Look for Vance, last seen on Law & Order: Criminal Intent, to make his debut in March. [TV Line]

... Ryan Murphy's NBC comedy pilot about a gay couple trying to start a family has found one of its leads. Book of Mormon star Andrew Rannells is being eyed as one of the stars, but there are no details on which one. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Katherine Heigl has expressed interest in returning to Grey's Anatomy. She last appeared on the medical soap in January of 2010, and left under contemptuous circumstances after fielding fire for publicly saying her character wasn't getting good material from the writers. Keep waiting by that phone, Katherine! [E! Online]

Good one on the Trooper joke, I laughed.

Anne Heche and Martin Lawrence shows all sound dead awful, and Martin with Kids would be unbearable in any scenario they come up with. Both of the sitcom ideas they came up with for him sound like bad jokes for shows of Tracy Jordan on 30 Rock.

I don't watch Treme, but it does suck that it doesn't get good ratings. David Simon created what many agree is the best tv show of all time, The Wire, but it's ratings and critical acclaim were the definition of inversely proportional. Treme is probably no Wire, but I head it's still a great show, but not a ratings draw. Even though David Simon can't get an audience, I'm glad HBO has the decency to allow him to create damn good TV.

I absolutely agree with ShayleeRae, Katherine Heigl must return to Grey's Anatomy - to date it has been okay without her - BUT it will be better with her. Her character is greatly missed.

Katherine is also correct, Shonda Rhimes can give her BETTER scripts instead of a background position.

We truly do miss you Katherine

Courtney B. Vance is an African American MAN. Time for a serious edit and apology to the MAN!

Didn't FOX have a show from their beginnings called Beans Baxter or something about a kid who gets caught up in spying when his dad dies or disappears and he thought his dad was postman?
