News Briefs: USA Might Save Happy Endings If ABC Cancels It

A-MAH-ZING NEWS

... USA! USA! USA! Never been more proud to be 'Merican than now! Because in the event that ABC decides to cancel the very funny comedy Happy Endings, USA Network might be eyeing a rescue boat for the series. While USA isn't known for its comedies, bringing on a critics' favorite might be exactly what the network needs to jumpstart its foray into laughers. USAh-mah-zing! [Deadline Hollywood]

BUSINESS TIME

... Cinemax has ordered a pilot for Quarry, a 1970s-set drama about a Vietnam War marksman who returns home and starts working as a contract killer after life back home gives him the finger. It's loosely based on the books by Max Allen Collins. [TV Line]

... NickMom has picked up its first original series, ordering 13 episodes of Instant Mom. The comedy stars Tia Mowry as a young party girl who marries an older man with three kids, turning her into an—WAIT FOR IT—Instant Mom!!!! In case you're wondering, NickMom is a block of primetime programming that takes over Nick Jr. after the kids have gone to bed and the moms can't find the remote control because the kids ate it. [Nickelodeon via press release]

... Syfy is expanding its reality efforts with the new series Exit, based on the Japanese program Dero!. It's a reality series where teams compete to escape a series of rooms filled with puzzles and obstacles. Exit will debut June 4 at 10pm. [Syfy via press release]

... TLC has ordered a spin-off of its reality garbage Breaking Amish. Called Breaking Amish: Brave New World, the show will actually be the second season of the show about the Amish kids from Season 1 entering the real world again, but with a new show title. Meanwhile, the "real" second season of Breaking Amish will feature a new cast of Amish kids experiencing life off the farm for the first time. Confused? You should be. Screw you, TLC. [TLC via press release]

... USA has announced premiere dates for its summer shows. I'm only going to say this once, so pay attention:

June 6 – Burn Notice, the series debut of Graceland

June 12 – Royal Pains, Necessary Roughness

July 16 – Covert Affairs, Suits

July (TBD) – Summer Camp

... Nerds, it's time to rise up and stop the exploitation of your geekdom by television execs looking to cash in on your earnest fandom. AMC has ordered Geek Out, a reality show that gives fans a unique experience based on whatever they obsess over, be it comic books, video games, movies, or hopefully even My Little Pony. [Deadline Hollywood]

CASTING NEWS

... Saturday Night Live's Nasim Pedrad has joined the cast of NBC's ensemble comedy pilot from standup John Mulaney. She'll play a school teacher. If the comedy goes to series, she'll leave SNL, so I bet she's crossing her fingers pretty hard right now. [EW]

... Sam Shepard (The Notebook, The Right Stuff) will replace Chris Cooper in Discovery's scripted series Klondike. The drama is about some guys who go gold-digging in some very cold places in 1890s Canada. [Deadline Hollywood]

... The Walking Dead has promoted Chad Coleman (Tyreese), Sonequa Martin-Green (Sasha), and Emily Kinney (Beth, sweet, sweet Beth) to series regulars for Season 4, which means Beth might be able to release a whole album of fireside songs next year. [TV Line]

Why am I only reading this now?! That's awesome USA, I hope it's true. Seems more like a TBS show to me but I'm not complaining.

Nope, that won't work. Happy Endings has four too many people for a USA show.

It seems like a copy of The Big Bang Theory but nothing can beat TBBT.

Bleurgh, dont get me started on the Big Bang Theory. Only good thing about it is Penny.

Happy Endings should be saved...but by USA? They have no track record of sitcoms in what twelve years?

I hate the idea of Nasim Pedrad leaving SNL. Seems like she just got there; a little quick to jump off for just a sitcom. If she stayed she could potentially be more successful, I think.

NickMom, really? Gonna be NickMaid, NickUncle and NickDog too? That's money down the drain, I predict viewership in under 5 digit numbers.

Siffy is putting on more programming and yet again it's not science fiction, so great. Embarrass yourself further, assholes. Oh wait, you can't, can you. Plus, it's hard to embarrass someone with NO SHAME. Show sounds generic which means it has potential to be slightly interesting so long as there's no twist of "... in the dark!" or "... while wearing monkeys!" And the twist will be "contestants are all network executives, nobody ever finds the exit!"

Sorry June, but July 16th has you beat! I'm there for all 3. Summer Camp will have to work hard to convince me.

Geek Out sounds quick-canceled.

Nasim can pull off a sitcom, I think she's the only actress on SNL right now who could, but she reminds me more of an ABC-style sitcom actor.

NickDog! That actually has potential if you think about it. If Disney can do something like Dog with a Blog and since there exists a library of dog shows and movies, I would not be surprised if someone did this. Even Family Guy could be syndicated on this.

But then you'd have feline rights leagues campaigning to get equal airtime for cats, and we all know how difficult it can be to program for them. (I had a cat who in her 17 years only paid attention to the TV when we were playing Duck Hunt on the NES.)

In case you are checking back on this, Hallmark has announced they are doing a Kitty Bowl to compete with Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl next February.

We've lost...

Flag
We have truly lost, Hallmark Channel, not their website. But, unlike the puppy bowl, the kitten bowl will have actual skills and abilities being scored. Unless the skills are "mewling for food and sleeping" I doubt this will go as well as they expect. Equal time for Feline Americans is coming!
Flag
Damn them to hades. Wait! It's a Kitty Bowl, perhaps they're only going to air it... ONLINE!!! Saved by the internet's insatiable addiction to cat videos! ... oh god, this is a sign that cats are smart enough to use the internet, isn't it?
Flag
I was expecting TBS to step up and save it. But USA is not bad either. Pairing it up with Modern Family reruns. Anything that keeps Happy Endings on air is ok in my book. USA! USA!! USA!!!!!

WTF USA? You don't air sitcoms right now, how can you rescue it? I mean, thanks and all, I already dig you so much and would feel even more kinship to you should you rescue Happy Endings, but where would it go? Also, aren't you telling all your showrunners that the future of the network is in darker drama a la FX? Or maybe you're seeing the writing on the wall, FX is weakening itself by the network split and putting a few sitcoms in between dramas will actually steal away some of that disenfranchised audience, that means... you have other sitcoms in mind perhaps? Nice. Happy Endings on USA, Cougar Town on TBS, Arrested Development on Netflix? Life could be pretty sweet, unless you're a broadcast network so stupid as to cancel those series in the first place.

I hope they give Beth an actual personality beyond nice teenage girl who sings and takes care of babies (seriously, just rereading that makes me want to scream WTF TWD?!??).

Give her some decent plotlines!! And do NOT Andrea/Lori her, aka take a perfectly fine female character and make her horrible and then kill her off.

Though, after that season finale I'm wondering if the show was always this not-great and I was just blinded by all the zombie awesomeness. Well, my zombie blinders have been removed, and this show had better step up!!

Cone on SyFy, enough with the reality shows.

"Face Off" is alright because it's somewhat interesting and the end-results at least have some creativity. But your other reality stuff is lame and panders to the lowest common denominator and "Exit" sounds like more of the same dreck.

Go back to making TV series. Licensing is working out alright for now, but you need some original stuff too.

What character?

Exactly. She doesn't deserve to be maligned like Lori and Andrea. Those two were given an abundance of screen time, and seemingly had a knack of making stupid and incredibly annoying decisions. Beth hasn't done much of anything, but be a sweet and innocent girl who sings sad yet uplifting songs.

I don't think USA needs a comedy series, they need to cancel Psych, that show is horrible. And why do we have to wait until the fall for White Collar? Happy Endings needs to be buried forever when ABC cancels it.
Reply

I do love Suits too, but I am sorry I couldn't get into Happy Endings. I didn't realize what a "crime" it would be for me to voice my opinion about a show that I don't care for. Everybody isn't going to like every show on television. Happy Endings is one of the worst shows on television after The Office and 30 Rock. Sorry that I stated what I do and do not like, but I thought that is what this site is for.

Flag
I reject everything about this. White Collar was good at first, but now it's just getting a little too... I can't think of the word.. just too much of it. Psych and Suits are the best thing USA has going.

You like Whit Collar, so I won't say you have terrible taste, but to have such hatred for Psych and Happy Endings, you definitely have bad taste.

Oh no another reality series on Syfy

I always knew USA was good, now they're saving possibly the best comedy on TV if ABC cancels it.. I kind of wish they would now. ABC seems to be taking notes on how to treat comedies by watching NBC.. which means they suck! I kind of thought TBS might end up getting it, it seems to me like it could fit well.

also, I'd personally call Psych a comedic thriller, so there's that.

USA hasn't had a comedy on it schedule since (and I may be wrong here) since it stopped it's USAM sit-com block (Wings, The Jeff Foxworthy show, Boston Common, Fired Up, Ned & Stacy, Evening Shade and a few others) . Personally, I'd much rather see HE go to TBS if ABC does cancel it. TBS has some good original comedies and some re-peats of network shows so I'd say HE would be a better fit at TBS.

I'd prefer USA didn't if it means any risk of losing psych, covert affairs, white collar or necessary roughness. and while I watch happy endings, it's *hugely* inconsistent when it comes to be funny. I honestly don't know that I care about it being renewed in any form.
Reply
Flag
Psyche was renewed for next season, but only for 8 episodes. Not sure if that means it's ending or not. It's likely Happy Endings will fill time when one of their other shows is not on. It's not like they have a full primetime schedule yet where they have to sacrifice something.

I don't watch HE, so don't care anyway either.

I'm not going to get too excited about Happy Ending until it's official, but I'm glad there is still hope.

They promoted Beth to a regular, I mean I get Tyreese, that was inevitable, even Sasha makes sense, I guess they must be planning actual stories for Beth next season, I hope they didn't promote her just to sing, and take care of lil asskicker. I mean even Carol and Hershel aren't regulars.

Reading this right before I planned on going to bed = me having some Happy Endings wet dreams. I'm gonna have some freaky threeway action with Jane and Brad, with Alex watching us while eating chicken wings. Brad, get out of my dreams!

I'm trying not to get my hopes up here, but uhhhh.... pleeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaase let this happen (if ABC cancels, of course).

My lifelong dream (that I just had two minutes ago) of a Psych/Happy Endings crossover is that much closer to fruition!

I'm sure Max has done a few horrible things in his past that Shawn and Gus could investigate. And can you imagine Lassy and Brad on a stakeout for some completely inane reason? I know I can!

No, but seriously, please save Happy Endings, USA. Show that stupid alphabet network how to treat a great comedy.

USA could very well make a fantastic run in Comedies. I would also suggest to them they take up Community. An hour block of those two shows unrestrained on a cable channel would be delightful. And it would seem right up their alley, they might not be one for sitcoms but Psych is very funny. Also the last season of Burn Notice was laughable, just not in the ha ha sense of the word.

I am a major Max Allen Collins fan, so looking forward to Quarry is the understatement of the century. I hope someone will have the guts to also serialize his Eliot Ness series real soon.

Not really surprised about the "promotion" of the three TWD people but I'd be happier if they FINALLY put Melissa McBride in the opening sequence - She's been in every episode with maybe one or two exceptions yet she's still relegated to the "Also Starring" post credit slot which I think is actually a little demeaning - She's more than earned her spot there so give it to her already and while I'm at it take Sarah wayne Calies OUT of the sequence, she remained there long after Lori died and didn't even appear until the last couple of episodes. Enough is enough.

I agree Melissa Mcbride deserves to be a regular, and Sarah Wayne Callie and all the departed(Laurie Holden and Michael Rooker) from last season will be removed from the credits beginning with season 4, I guess since they were series regulars they get to stay in the opening credits until the end of the season.

I cannot fathom how any of those shows could be considered good quality. Certainly none of them has ever been close to being the most critically acclaimed or popular show on television. There might be a certain demographic drawn to this kind of dated, formulaic, unimaginative fare but they are probably the same as those who watch other shows of similar quality, such as celebrity diving. Anything else might be too entertaining or artistically satisfying for them to handle!
Reply
Flag
I'm not concerned with people not liking these shows, but comparing them to Splash tells me you might not have watched beyond the promos of each show back when...
I for one never wanted to watch Burn Notice based on that, but boy was i wrong! And seriously, Psych doesn't take itself serious, it knows that and that's why it is so great. And Suits writing is undeniable...same goes for the chemistry between cast members (for all these shows), and that is a big plus too (for me anyway).
So you do like Happy Endings (odd, i do too), but I'm curious what floats your boat? I can assume Breaking Bad, Homeland, etc?
1
Reply
Flag
No I'm pretty well informed on these shows, having forced myself to watch all of season 1 of both Burn Notice and Psych...and I HATE THEM!!!!!!!! (as much as I hate celebrity diving shows, the argument is incontrovertible)

I wish Psych would treat itself more seriously, it's so convinced that it's the most hilarious show in the world that it doesn't work to be funny, it doesn't realise it's lead character is one of the most awful characters on tv and it forces upon its viewers stories so listless that they would be rejected from average genius detective shows like The Mentalist, and nowhere near the standard of good genius detective shows like L&O:CI.

As for recent shows worthy of not hating, some include:
Boss, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, Louie, American Horror Story, Awake, Girls, Homeland (but season 1 was far better than season 2), Community (up to season 3 only), large parts of The Walking Dead, Happy Endings, The Americans, Justified, Sherlock, Doctor Who, Damages, Copper, Dexter (sans season 6), Last Resort, The Good Wife, The Secret Circle, Downton Abbey, The Borgias, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Fringe, Red Dwarf, Nashville, Parks and Recreation, The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret, Portlandia, Law & Order: SVU, The League, Kroll Show, 30 Rock,...

I can't speak for Ben but I prefer shows with plot continuity such as Breaking Bad. If you miss an episode of any USA show, you can still pick up where you left off and you wouldn't have missed anything.
