News Briefs: We'll All Binge on Kyle Chandler When He Becomes a Netflix Star

CLEAR EYES FULL HEARTS NEWS

... Kyle Chandler, best known as Coach Eric Taylor from Friday Night Lights but who was also that guy who read newspapers from the future in Early Edition, will star in Netflix's upcoming drama from the creators of Damages. The series follows siblings whose deep secrets are dug up when the black sheep brother comes home. Chandler was previously attached to a Showtime pilot called The Vatican, but that network said no thanks. If Chandler doesn't get you excited about this, the creators of Damages should. BUSINESS TIME

... ABC is the only one of the major four networks that doesn't air football, but that could change. The network is reportedly having discussions to acquire rights to Thursday-night NFL games; the league is shopping six to eight of those contests for next season. Medium deal for you the TV viewer, HUGE deal for ABC if the network can pull it off. Plus, maybe we'd get rid of those awful Thursday Night Football broadcasts on NFL Network. [Sports Business Daily]

... CBS has set premiere dates for its two reality winter reality series Survivor and The Amazing Race. On February 23 at 8pm, Americans will transform the globe into their own personal game show and run around in search of clues because CASH. On February 26, CBS will relive high school trauma as Survivor contestants are separated into three cliques: brains, brawn, and beauty. I was rejected from competing this season because there's no "smelly" clique. [CBS via press release]

... ABC has ordered the comedy pilot Black-ish as it preps another cycle of new shows that will probably be canceled very quickly. But this one has the awesome Anthony Anderson, so maybe it will be good? Anderson stars as an affluent father of two kids who he fears will grow up without a sense of their African-American cultural identity. [TVGuide.com]

... A&E is developing a remake of the 1980s drama Highway to Heaven, which ran from 1984 to 1989 on NBC. Mark Wahlberg would produce (whaaaaa?) what the network is calling an "edgier" reboot of the series. The original starred Michael Landon as an angel sent down to Earth to help troubled humans overcome their problems. I guess the edgier version will have more angel sex? [THR]

... Jimmy Kimmel Live will film in Austin for SXSW during the week of March 10. Ummm, that's all I got. [ABC via press release]

... Duck, duck, loose...r ratings. Duck Dynasty aired its first new episode since its big "homosexuality = bestiality" controversy, and its ratings were down. 8.5 million people tuned in, and among the 18-49 set, it was number two for the night behind American Idol. Usually controversy fuels ratings, but it looks like Duck Dynasty ran into a lot of competition and is cooling off after a bonkers Season 4 premiere last summer. [Variety]

... Bravo is cooking up (ha!) another Top Chef spin-off, this one called Top Chef Extreme. I wish I could say it involved cooks whipping up a plate of Duck l'Orange while riding a dirt bike through a fiery hoop, but it's just former Top Chef contestants competing one-on-one against each other. [The Wrap]

... NBC is moving forward with Salvation, a drama about a family involved with a megachurch and all the lies, corruption, and occasional miracles that come with it. This is NBC's seventh pilot order of this young season, meaning the network is totally going for it again. If at first you don't succeed, try again. And again. And again. And again. On second thought, maybe NBC should just give up. [Deadline Hollywood]

CASTING NEWS

... Joan Allen (The Contender) will join the fourth and final season of The Killing as an antagonist to Detective Linden. Allen will play the headmistress of an all-boys academy who is tangled up in the season's murder mystery. [TVGuide.com]

... French actor Olivier Martinez has joined ABC's Revenge as the father of Margaux (played by the recently promoted Karine Vanasse). No word on when he'll appear, but his character Pascal LaMarchal has a complicated history with Victoria (don't we all?). [Deadline Hollywood]

... True Blood has found a replacement for the character of James, the role that was abandoned by Luke Grimes after he disagreed with the direction of the character. Bunheads' Nathan Parsons will now take over the fangs. Don't worry—James will still be a handsome white guy who takes his shirt off! [TV Line]

SAD NEWS

... Orange is the New Black cast member Michelle Hurst (she played Miss Claudette) is recovering after being placed in a medically induced coma for two weeks following a car accident. Get better, Michelle! [TVGuide.com]

I'm pretty sure Duck Dynasty is down 30% because a lot of people are just outright refusing to watch the show until it's off A&E altogether.

I am late to the news but I am so glad the killing has a 4th season. Same story with Nikita, 6 episode only to conclude the story but with the pace of the killing previous season, can they do a whole case in 6 episodes?

Netflix episodes are usually longer, around 60 minutes. So more time than a 6 episode season on AMC. I'd prefer more, but I'm just happy the show will get a proper ending.

Whenever I hear good news about Kyle Chandler, I think his name in the voices of Minka Kelly, Drew Barrymore, and whoever that other chick was that yelled his name when he won his Emmy a few years ago.

"edgier" on NBC? Does that mean instead of saying "gosh" they'll say "darn"?

I still don't get why Luke Grimes ditched on True Blood? So what if the character is going in a crappy direction - doesn't he get to have some "quality time" with Deborah Ann Woll's Jessica? I'd kill for that part on the show, they were willing to pay him for the privilege - what a mupett!

Actually, no, Kyle Chandler does not get me excited for the new Netflic drama, but I guess my excitement over another show from the creators of Damages overpowers that.

I'm actually looking forward to Salvation. From what I've heard and read, it's going to be based on the cult movie 'Legion'.

I've always been a fan of movies that subvert religion and/or explore 'theories' about religions, so Salvation is definitely a 'must watch' for me.

I just hope that Timothy 'Nitpicky' Surette reviews it.

This made me literally laugh out loud!!!!! So true, and I couldn't agree more!

Leave it to NBC to go with a series which casts religion in the worst possible light.

So, let me see if I understand your comment correctly...

A network decides to launch a series that casts scepticism on a religion, and, before you've even watched 30 seconds of said series, you attack the network that ordered the show?

Way to add to your credibility.

Personally, I've always been a fan of religion-attacking shows and movies: LOVED Constantine, despite its 'cult' label, loved Legion, even loved The Da Vinci Code, and Angels and Demons (books included!) and can't wait to see what this show has to offer.

You seem to be defending the show before you've even watched 30 seconds of said series, based on past experience with similar shows.

The OP is attacking the show before even watching 30 seconds of said series, based on past experience with similar shows.

Further info about the Thursday Night Football suggests it can be as few as 6 to 8 games but as many as all 13 games. The main thing with NFL Network though is that they will simulcast the games and air any games not picked up in the package. So no, you won't get rid of Thursday Night Football on NFL Network commercials.

neither the creators of damages nor a guy from a show that made minka kelly famous interest me. really, between the number of them not even looking good enough to try and the ones I did try being disappointing, I have no faith in netflix originals. wake me up when they have a deadwood, rome, boardwalk empire, the newsroom, spartacus etc. okay well actually the one area where I'm going to try and be hopeful is with the marvel series. at least there's little chance they can be as catastrophically awful as agents of shield.

what happened to the other anthony anderson as a dad show? it blew? okay, lets give him another one.

joan allen (another casualty of plastic surgery)

apparently I'm in a mood. it could be that it's past my bed time...

Friday Night Lights is as good or even better in some aspects than Deadwood, Rome and Boardwalk Empire as awesome as they are. But way better than Newsroom by a mile.

Actually Deadwood, Rome and Boardwalk are all in my top 10 of all time list (well ok maybe 15), not to mention The Shield, The Wire, Breaking Bad, Dead Like Me, Southland, etcetc but given the writing, acting, and production and most everything else about Friday Night Lights was equal to those greats in many aspects, which is actually pretty amazing given it was a network show. Sure it had its cliche moments/plotlines at times but that comes with the whole network show thing. Maybe Im just partial because Im a small-town Texan and it was one of the most accurate representations of small-town life Ive seen on the small-screen.

I'm almost tempted to have a look at The Amazing Race just to have a laugh, but I'm afraid I'll headdesk more than anything, esp. as a non-American.

well... to be fair: NONE of the Big4 networks air football... as of that sissy, bleak, rugby-like activity - that's another deal.

NBC and FOX both will frown at you for your lack of knowledge here. NBC has the English Premier League and FOX has the FA Cup, both of which air select matches on the main networks. Heck, NBC has only not aired the 12:30 PM Saturday contest twice since they acquired the English Premier rights.

That's ok. NBC uses their own announcing team for the 12:30 game with Arlo White usually providing play-by-play and either Lee Dixon or Graeme Le Saux providing analysis. They have also had a few guest analysts who are playing this season when both Dixon and Le Saux were unavailable, and they used a different play-by-play man when White was away doing the MLS playoffs.

Fox is using the world feed for FA Cup matches up until the championship. At that time they will once again unite Gus Johnson and Ian Wright. They may have them call a few matches for FS1 or Fox Soccer Plus before the championship as well, but not until college basketball season is over, as Johnson will be tied up with Big East Basketball until then.
