News Briefs: Which CBS Show Got the Coveted Post-Super Bowl Slot?

GUARANTEED RATINGS BOOST NEWS

... The greatest football match in all the land, the Super Duper Bowl, will be broadcast by CBS this year. That means CBS will not only have to brush up on its young person lingo so as to deal with a mass influx of young people, it will have to pick one of its shows to air a new episode after the Super Bowl and reap the rewards of a drunken audience too comatose to change the channel. This year, the lucky show is Elementary, the updated Sherlock Holmes procedural starring the very cool Jonny Lee Miller. In case you were wondering, CBS aired an episode of Undercover Boss the last time it broadcast the Super Bowl, in 2010. [CBS via press release]

BUSINESS TIME

... Disney XD has renewed Kickin' It for a third season. The comedy is about a group of kids who punch and kick their way into your hearts... by breaking your sternum and cracking your rib cage! Don't trust their lovable hijinks! [Disney XD via press release]

... CBS is finally going to embrace Hulu and will put thousands of episodes on the streaming-video site early next year. The majority of shows, which will largely consist of programs from the network's vast library of older series, will be available only for Hulu Plus subscribers. Hulu is a group effort between Comcast (NBC), Viacom (Fox), and Disney (ABC), and CBS had long been the lone holdout/non-participant. Though CBS has finally decided to join the fun, it's still far off from being one of the Hulu gang. You can watch current CBS shows on CBS.com. Thank you, this has been a message from your pals at CBS. [CBS via press release]

... Those kids from Jersey Shore are getting back together for a fundraiser to help rebuild their stomping grounds after Superstorm Sandy damaged the area. Restore the Shore will air on November 15 from MTV's Times Square studio and encourage kids to donate to relief efforts. If this goes well, the cast of Jersey Shore will hold another benefit to unclog that toilet they destroyed a few seasons ago. [EW]

CASTING NEWS

... Aisha Tyler, who your mom knows from The Talk and you should know from Archer, will soon be known to your kid sister as Jake's mom from Glee. The actress will guest-star on the Fox musical-comedy-drama later this year. [TV Line]

... One Direction is performing on The X Factor on November 8! Woooooo! One Direction for president! Wooooooo! [Fox via press release]

... Criminal Minds is inviting Michelle Trachtenberg (Gossip Girl's Georgina) to come on for a guest role in its eighth season. She'll play a stalker who goes a little crazy in Episode 12. [EW]

... The ageless Jane Seymour is stopping by Fox's comedy Ben and Kate. Seymour will stop shilling heart-shaped pendants to play BJ's mother in an episode next year. David Hornsby (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) will also guest-star in the episode, as an entrepreneur who got rich off of one of Ben's ideas. [TV Line]

Too bad Aisha Tyler isn't going to be on a show I like. I had no idea she was on The Talk, these days I get my fix of her from the aforementioned Archer and her podcast Girl on Guy.

Why no mention of Aisha Tyler in Ghost Whisperer? She ran the store with Jennifer Love H. and died tragically in a plane crash. Couldn't watch the show after that.

And as Charlie in Friends?

What if I know Aisha Tyler from Talk Soup, or Friends, or Balls of Fury, or CSI? What if I just know her because she's a working actor, what then?

Michelle Trachtenberg on Criminal Minds is f*cking genius. I'm already anticipating this as the best episode since Amber Heard got a little cozy with Dr. Spencer Reid way back when.

Attention TV.com community. Aisha Taylor is amazing! That is all.

Can I just say my favorite post Superbowl episode was of Alias, I think 2002 Season 2 Phase One ep 13. For all the men, youtube it and just watch the intro. And it was a fantastic. Game changing episode.

Hey Hulu, you still charge with commercials, bite me.

Michelle Trachtenberg will always be Buffy's Dawn to me :)

I loved Buffy, and I own all the seasons on DVD, but I HATED Dawn. Now every time I watch Trachtenberg in any TV show I just think about how she made Buffy worse.

Viacom has nothing to do with Hulu. I do not believe they even allow their network programs to stream there.

The CBS deal is, as far as I understand it, only for older programs, not their current stuff, with the exception of material from Entertainment Tonight.

Mate (below) is right about Sherlock Holmes. When you realize that, it's a disappointment. The great thing about the British shows is they are basically taking those old stories and cleverly modernizing them. Here, it's just empty in comparison - almost an insult to classic literature. However, if they had chosen to name Miller's character something else and had him needing to be high on heroin to solve crimes, that might have been ironic, interesting, and maybe funny in a sick sort of way. I would even accept him as a distant relative of Sherlock perhaps named Nigel - ha ha.

Viacom has a large catalog of shows available on Hulu and Hulu Plus. Browse by network - Comedy Central, MTV, VH1, CMT, Nickelodeon, TV Land, etc.

To me Michelle Trachtenberg will always be Buffy's fake little sister.

I thought FOX was owned by NewsCorp...

Cool for Elementary. Though I may be the only straight male american who doesn't give a shit about football.it's a snail-paced stop-start snore-fest. basketball is where's it's at, bitches!

that hulu-plus news kicks ass! cbs.com sucks donkey dong when it comes to trying to stream from their site. it's grainy, and the ad & video programming is problem prone. and why the 'f' weren't they streaming person of interest anyway?

Viacom doesn't own Fox. Viacom was actually owned by CBS (irony!) but now is independent (I think). Either way, Viacom is not related to Fox at all.

Viacom (which owns Paramount, and a number of cable channels) and CBS Corporation (which is CBS, partly CW, and radio) are different companies that are owned by National Amusements, which is owned by the the son and daughter of Sumner Redstone. Sumner, of course, is one of the top executives for both Viacom and CBS.

This should be as clear as mud, but just know that Sumner basically controls both, and you're pretty much golden.

Yeah, they own the MTV and VH1 channels, Nickelodeons, TV Land, and more.

Stupid move not to choose Person of Interest. The Superbowl demographic would definitely have a greater chance of tuning in after seeing some bad-ass action, shoot-'em-up trailers for PoI.

Elementary? Well, okay. I've certainly seen worse things follow the Bowl. I cringe every time it's a reality show.

Now all they need to do is allow users outside the United States to use Hulu and we are set!

POI was the one.

CBS.com has the worst streaming video player on the internet. Even the CW has a far superior player.

I agree with Mate. It should have been Person of Interest.

I'll tell you why they chose Elementary, it's not because it's a procedural so it's easy to catch on for first time views.. its the reason charlie's angles got a sequel and her name is Lucy Liu! Overwhelming portion of superbowl watchers are men and lucy liu is absolutely gorgeous! Smart move CBS.
Reply
Flag
But even as gorgeous as she is (and she is really gorgeous) she can't override the mundanity of the show. Maybe they should let her kick a little arse. It might make it more interesting.
Reply
Flag
Mate, i agree with you totally. POI is definitely the best but I am pretty sure lucy liu factored into their decision and also the fact that this is a procedural.
Reply
Flag
Can we please start calling it the "average crime procedural, where the character happens to be named Sherlock Holmes"? Too Long? If any of their shows deserve that spot it is POI. POI is the best show CBS has.

the good wife is the best cbs show.
Reply

They are the two best of CBS. I would vote for POI, but objectively I think The Good Wife would be considered better as it has contained a high level of quality for a much longer time than POI.

I still like POI more though :) Reese, Finch & Co FTW!
Reply

Never seen it.
Reply
Flag
POI doesn't need the spot most likely. I'd imagine their thinking is that they might be able to use the spot to introduce people to Elementary and boost it's ratings.
Reply
Flag
Is that how networks decide on who gets the spot? (genuine question.)

Not always, but it's a big consideration in the selection. It's normally an opportunity to showcase a brand new show (CBS with Undercover Boss; NBC with Homicide or The Voice) or highlight a show the network wants to promote more (ABC with Grey's and Alias).

Thanks Noel. I wish they would have chosen Person of Interest though. kinda feel like its awesomeness isn't being recognized nearly enough.

CBS coming to Hulu Plus is just the good news I needed today!!!!!!
