Once Upon A Time: Musical Episode Slated for Spring?

After six seasons, Once Upon A Time is finally going full fan service and doing a musical episode this Spring, TVLine is reporting.

While an ABC spokesperson has declined to comment, the OUAT musical episode has been the source of much anticipation -- and consideration on the part of producers. Eddy Kitsis (of OUAT's showrunner duo Kitsis and Horowitz) said once at Comic Con in 2015 that "It would be great to do a musical episode, [but] I don't know even where to begin."

The Supergirl and Flash musical crossover finally has an air date

We do! OUAT is a soap opera about Disney movies, which have some of the most beloved and well-known songs in the world to pull from. Original numbers could reflect the tangled mess of marriages, parentage and curses that bind the plot together, too.

May we suggest Belle singing about sending her newborn baby out a window in the care of a fairy the size of a turtledove? Emma doing a rocking power ballad about the foster care system? Regina could do a ditty about forbidden fruit? The possibilities are endless.

Once returns to ABC Sunday, March 5 at 8/7c.

What do you suggest as musical styles for each character?
I see Emma as a hair band waiting to happen; Regina as a power balladeer; and Snow and Charming could just reprise that lovely piece from the montage where they were waking each other up at the beginning of the season- Can't recall the name, but it really fit the scene beautifully

So true, Lyta. When this show was first described, I thought they were going to be doing Fables for the small screen. The good thing is that Fables hasn't been sullied, so it could some day be made, but it would take cable/Amazon/Netflix to do it justice. I don't trust H&K to do anything at this point.

I think they should pick a week and ALL SHOWS would be musicals on those seven days.

Can the cast sing? If so then I don't see any reason why they can't do a musical episode.

I think that JMos ability to sing was discussed to death all those years people were talking about possible House musical episode. She is probably not tone deaf as she was clarinet player in her high school marching band and sang in the choir. She also at least at one instance sang Teardrop at House's cast Christmas party. Also her sister is a singer and songwriter and her brother is a school band director, so I assume they do have some musical talent running in the family.
I am not sure about the rest of the cast as I have not followed their careers this closely (I used to have a House fan site), but Lana did briefly sing on The Defenders and it wasn't bad.
The problematic thing I see that many years had passed since the time Xena and Buffy did is an original thing and since then, we have seen it everywhere from The 70's Show, Ally McBeal, Chicago Hope, Grey's Anatomy, Scrubs, Sanctuary and even Psych did it. It has been done to death. There is upcoming musical as Flash/Supergirl crossover. On House, it luckily came down to one song in the later seasons no one watched anymore. And knowing what a mess OUAT already is, I highly hope it could be original or good.

I could also be helpful if they are tone deaf and arhythmic. It might help show producers to move on from this lazy option.

You think musicals are a lazy option? There is all kinds of extra work involved.

I meant lazy in terms of episode ideas. Since this bit has been done to death as LytaAlexander47 noted, unless you can bring something new and clever to it, why do it at all?

Since Horowitz and Kitsis haven't done anything new or clever in last last couple of seasons, I have no belief that they are suddenly going to turn it around now.

The question is if they ever did something new? Recently it was discussed on tumblr that by the Pilot screenplay you can tell that they thought they are being original by making the evil queen beautiful as opposed to the old and ugly witch. I mean, if you have ever read Snow White, you find out that the sole motivation of the Evil Queen is that she is the hottest chick around, but one day Snow White grows up and becomes "the fairest of them all". The old woman thing was the disguise she used to trick Snow White into eating the apple. And then if you take into the account that the whole premise is Fables rip-off, one has to ask about the originality, newness or cleverness of the show which has gone from being about the female leads to Once Upon a Where Is My Boyfriend.

So, if you take all this into account, I think that the most we can expect is a Once More With a Feeling rip-off, probably filled with some profoundly superficial lyrics.

Eh why must shows do this to us. Why have musicals, especially on a show that's created a family tree that combines Peter Pan, rumplestilken, Snow White and the evil queen into it.
